@@yakub3962 Ehh, furries are used to outsiders coming to the conventions to try and create a commotion. There's a long past of KZreadrs coming in to try and mess with people and be disrespectful, so people are a lot less tolerant of that sort of behaviour now. If you go there and are respectful though, you'll have a good time. Just look at the All Gas, No Brakes episode where they went to a furry convention

Unfortunately it comes down to you hear about the loudest and most bizarre parts of a Fandom first. The sexual aspect is definitely there, but it's not for everyone. However those who ARE into it tend to be very outspoken and loud about it as opposed to those who aren't that just want to be left alone lol

I think a lot of what people talk about with them is that, and their community can genuinely get really really strange and weird, but the surface level parts are not that bad and people are a little dramatic about furries.

  • @painfulVeracity

Over time, I’ve learned that every fandom has a sexual side to it in the background. Every single one. If there isn’t NSFW fanart/fanfiction of it yet, give it time to get a bit more popular and there probably will be. Nobody really flames people for liking Family Guy, The Simpsons, or Pokémon, but the sheer amount of porn and other NSFW content tucked into the back of those fandoms is absolutely ridiculous and has always been that way. People don’t understand furries and tend to think that they’re something they’re not and generalize the whole fandom at once based on that assumption, but don’t do the same to other fandoms and it’s strange. Furries taught most of us how to read and spell and count/do simple math, etc. They entertained us even into adulthood through Disney and Warner Brothers and the like. People have always drawn/painted furries in different ways to different extents based on how art looked at that time, hell, Ancient Egyptian mythology had a pantheon chock-full of anthropomorphic Gods and Goddesses (and they weren’t/aren’t the only religion to have them! Think of Ancient Indian, Chinese, Greek, and Roman mythology!) People hate furries because it’s popular to hate them, and much easier to follow the crowd than potentially make themselves the target of ridicule.

  • @All-ze9cl

    @All-ze9cl

@@painfulVeracity also, and this is kind of a stretch but it’s my theory, a lot of people hate the furry fandom bc of the lgbtq aspects. A lot of furries are queer and it’s definitely a fairly large part of the fandom. And the truth is, people just don’t like things that are “gay.” That’s why I think they get so much more hate compared to other fandoms

My roomate in college was a furry. One of the reasons they connected a lot with the community was in part due to their autism. They struggle with being able to maintain eye contact and by being in a fursuit, they didn't have to worry about maintaining eye contact and they could be more of "themself;" which reminded me of Habor and Jay were talking about their "Fursona's" being an extension of the person they want to be. The furry community is a big eclectic group of people that engage in a hobby that allows them to change their whole identity, and show others the things they want to be appeciated and seen. I think there is a beauty in a community that regonizes that supports each other for whats not on the outside, but the beauty of the person on the inside. While I don't think everyone needs to engage in the community, I would implore you to not make fun of the furry community because they are built on uplifting others.

1:37 "Probably a non-black person" is such a weird answer for me to hear from him in response to "what do you think a furry is". As a black person who grew up with a lot of "not expected" interests. Other black people would always question my blackness just cause i liked nerd stuff (which back then wasn't cool like it is now). Wild to see that that whole "if it's not the norm/cool then it's probably just some white people/non-black people shit" mentality still exists. Was really hoping we left that shit in 2008 lol.

I'm not a furry, but I'm autistic and gay, so there's a lot of overlap in those communities. In my experiences, they're the nicest people, and the principle behind the fandom makes sense even if it isn't for me. I was worried about the biases the guessers and commenters might have, but was pleasantly surprised. Also aside from having the second guy and last girl switched, I guessed correctly!

Okay , so for some clarification in case CUT isn't very thorough and sometimes misleading. . A furry is a fan of anthropomorphic characters ( no suit required, only around 15% have fursuits) . Furry isn't an part of lgbt or a sex thing (and beastiality is not welcome or advocated for ), however with any subculture or fandom that can be a safe sandbox to express and experiment with your own identity and even sexuality you have more queer representation and visibility and more individuals that "figure themselves out " (as all of fandoms do it has horny people in it and in furry those tend to be more open about it and since its basically an imagination sandbox to begin with you can find some pretty bizarre stuff in this regard but thats the internet for ya, also like any online fandom plz supervise your children the open internet is not a good place to let any minor roam around for any fandom) . There is no age gate and You dont have to be a part of a community or "the fandom " to be a furry. And on the other side of this you can be a fan of anthropomorphic characters in fiction and media and everything else you might expect a furry to do/be and not consider yourself one, its a label you can choose to wear.

All those little differences that I show, add up to a lot of ridicule, not just from my peers but everyone in life, including family. So, I always related to animals more because they're non-judgmental. I just feel safe around them. Over the course of my life I started identifying with them. Eventually, I found this incredibly non-judgmental community that mostly feels the same way I do, because many of them come from the same background. I understand that it looks weird, but most of us are just trying to find a community we can feel safe to be ourselves in.

@@Centurion556 (Sorry for length. Just thorough with my thoughts is all.) What's objectively weird to most people, and very telling at the same time, are people who see others having a good time, treating others human beings with respect, not hurting or shitting on each other, and their reaction to that basic decency is negative. It usually means they have negativity as their default due to the environment and social groups they surround themselves with who reinforce it often. It's usually a sign that it's been normalized to denigrate others as a replacement for figuring out what exactly in their lives has made them so quick to do so. Think of it like a personal bar that raises and lowers. For society, the bar goes up and down. Better people want the bar raised until decency, positivity, and kindness are the norm. Others constantly desire for and try to move the bar lower and lower in the hopes that their own indecencies, unkindness, and negative ideals will be normalized. Several decades ago to now: people who made and used computers, D&D (and all similar roleplaying games), comic books, rock/metal/rap/alternative/etc music, video games, card games (MTG, Pokemon, Digimon), and many other things were all demonized as "objectively bad", even demonic and akin to Satanic by many self absorbed people just because it wasn't their thing. If people with the mindset you have always had their way, our world would be a dreary and lifeless place to live. Hell, even Christmas as we celebrate it now wouldn't exist. Some devout Christians HATED the festivities and cheerfulness and straight up BANNED everything but prayer during December and guaranteed wanted the ban all over. But Germans and other immigrants with Pagan traditions kept coming and eventually got the banned removed. "Objectively" is a word people throw around now more often when 9/10 the "I don't like it. I'm not into it. But other people enjoy it who aren't me. So it's bad."

the girl who explained furries at the beginning did it pretty poorly. we just like making characters with these features because it gives a lot more room for cool designs or personalities/stories, and we essentially cosplay the characters we made up. sometimes cosplaying from other medias with existing anthropomorphic characters happens as well. a lot of us don't necessarily want to "be" human-esque animals.

There exists in society a stigma that makes standing out a bad thing or a weakness. I could only imagine that furries tend to stray from that line of thinking, and because of that, they are more compassionate and accepting of people in general. The bottom line is that whether you are a furry or just a "normal" person, you should always try to be your best self. Total conformance is a weakness because it indicates that you lack confidence and direction. People who fall into that kind of trap find themselves jealous or unsatisfied with how things are going for them, and feel the need to lash out at those who are different but still happy, as it is scary for them to accept that they may need to change how they think. Hate doesn't come from nowhere. It is the result of some kind of suffering, and sometimes, society is the root said suffering. Instead of allowing negativity to control you because you can't accept that you aren't perfect, it may be better to learn from those who accept themselves and ask how they can still find happiness and compassion despite their weaknesses. Sorry for the rant! I just like giving advice or things to think about.

Other similar instances that reminded me of this is David Goggins who created an alter ego or Eminem who did the same. As long as no one who is hurting anyone (without their consent ofc), I have no issues with it!

Wrong! We do not wish to be our characters ("fursonas")! The creator of Mickey mouse did not want to actively become Mickey, they just liked his concept.

I’m not a furry but dress up is fun! It’s not too far away from cosplay. I’m a brony and we also get harassed a lot so hopefully people will stop caring so much in the future. I’m tired of hiding 😑

i've always been so curious about bronies... does it just mean you're a fan of the show (and if so, what draws you to be such a big fan)? or are you a furry? just curious! no hate at all

@kaitheguy423 I'm not the person you were asking this to, but as a fan of MLP who doesn't really consider myself a brony, I can probably tell you why so many people are drawn to the fandom! For me, I enjoy the child-like sense of wonder I get from the show and genuinely like the animation! I also enjoy the general messages and morals some episodes portray and I'm a big fan of music, so these type of things are what drew me to be a fan of the show. Kinda similarly to the furry community, you can make characters that could possibly be inserted into the show, sort of like a character that represents you, and that's often very fun to get into and show to friends and other people who have the same interest!

@kaitheguy423 I know I'm not the original commenter but maybe my answer might be helpful. I'm a brony and I grew up with the show, what drew me so much to it was the fun characters and art style, the lessons also helped me genuinely become a better person. Now 10 years later I'm still a fan because of the hundreds of characters with unique and relatable personalities, the great backstories and lore of the show, the music which is surprisingly good, the humour, the character's relationships with eachother, and the fandom. It makes sense why its a pretty big fandom. Since the artstyle of the show isn't too complex its not very hard to make fanart for it. A lot of fans will want to make their own character see what type of pony they'd be, make them as colourful as they want, give them the most complex backstory possible in this magic filled world, see what their special talent unique to them would be. There's people who make their own comic series or animated series based on the show, write thousands word long stories about the characters, make original music, do cosplay. As a fandom it encourages any form of art so much and the show being based on friendship means people are very friendly, it's also very accepting of others making it a very safe space for queer or neurodivergent people. It's very furry adjacent but with a more focused interest on a specific show so it has it's own history to be its own thing.

The furry community is one of the most warm and welcoming you'll ever meet. It's built upon fun, acceptance, creativity and inclusiveness. Denver has hosted some large furry conventions and they're one of the kindest groups we have here. I've never heard a single bad thing about the community beyond ignorant and intolerant fools. The community also supports a lot of extremely talented and creative independent artists who gain a wonderful platform for their work. I mean, how could you interact with the hammerhead shark and NOT be smiling the entire time? The ability to express your inner self is wonderful for people and I can't picture myself getting angry while wearing a fur suit. Much love to the people in the community!
