The citation for Sgt Gander reads “For saving the lives of Canadian infantrymen during the Battle of Lye Mun on Hong Kong Island in December 1941. On three documented occasions, Gander, the Newfoundland mascot of The Royal Rifles of Canada, engaged the enemy as his regiment joined The Winnipeg Grenadiers, members of Battalion Headquarters "C" Force and other Commonwealth troops in their courageous defence of the island. Twice Gander's attacks halted the enemy's advance and protected groups of wounded soldiers. In a final act of bravery, the war dog was killed in action gathering a grenade. Without Gander's intervention, many more lives would have been lost in the assault.”

For those unaware, he flew through heavy machine gun and artillery fire, once going down after being struck, but took the the air again, blind in one eye, one leg dangling off, and hit in the breast. He flew 25 miles in only 30 minutes. His valiant effort saved the lives of nearly 200 men. He was awarded a "Croix de guerre" medal for his service. If you were to look at the "notable foreign recipients" of this award on Wikipedia, you would see names like, General George S. Patton, General Douglas MacArthur, and Carrier Pigeon Cher Ami.

For those interested, the movie "Valiant" is an animated film from a British Pixar subsidary, and it follows a group of British carrier pigeons through WW2. There's also an animated film titled "Sgt. Stubby". Sgt. Stubby was the most decorated dog in all of WW1, and the only dog to ever be awarded the rank of Sergeant. Both are great movies that do a wonderful job of storytelling and they both portray actual historical events in a family friendly manner. Definitely worth a watch.

I wonder why SGT Stubby never got an award? He was the U.S. military's first ever service dog, despite being smuggled on to the ship by his owner. Thanks to him the U.S. started a canine war dog campaign. He warned soldiers in WW1 of impending gas attacks and found and attacked several German soldiers dressed in U.S. military uniforms saving lives on many occasions. He was promoted to the rank of SGT higher than his Corporal owner and later became the first mascot the Georgetown University. His body has been preserved and is now in the Smithsonian. Not to mention all of this he was a dog of mixed breed but most predominantly a mix of Boston terrior and pitbull. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sergeant_Stubby

My little mongrel dog saved me from a bunch of of punk bullies in 1959. Stray was her name because that's how she came to us. She was my best friend when I was 7 to 9 years old. Her son Fetchie stayed with us for many years. Stray was shot by a cruel neighbor when she got out of the yard. She knew an evil son of a bitch when she saw one.
