Russell was like a babe in the woods just a short four years ago...trying to find some meaning in the monumental social conflicts of our age. He's come a long way on his journey. Some of us have been on that journey for decades. It gives me heart to see a younger generation taking the torch for freedom from us old geezers who have been sounding the alarm bells for many years - mostly being ignored. We're not ignored any longer thanks to people like Russell Brand.

I was studying history of Russia in Poland , first I truly believed in bad Stalin , gulags , but more I was digging found that in 1935 2% of USSR population were in labour camps in 1948 0.8% of Soviet people were in labor camps. If you take USSR in 1980s 60 out of 100 000 , its 0.06% of population were in prisons. If you take USA of today 0.8%of USA population are now being in prisons. So this bold guy is not that smart as he seems. Tho he has a point.

I would rather not group people in categories as well, that's a personal preference, but admittedly that is not reality. Russell deserves credit for trying, not just in recognizing that his views are sometimes skewed, but understanding that he can and will always try for betterment. What agenda does he have? He genuinely wants people to live happy lives, with enough food to eat and not worrying about bombs going off in their faces as they try to eat said food. If more people could do those actions, this would be a safer world.

Loads of people have good ideas about how to tackle the wealth distribution issues brought about by ever advancing technology. In this clip, at least, his advice seems to be to change nothing (because you can't) and to just stand on the rail track looking depressed, hoping the oncoming train won't hit you. Of course, you would have to want to help people, to listen to those good ideas, or to admit to others that they exist... If, for example, you were a psychopath and you viewed everyone as (now) pointless and redundant slaves and nothing more, why would you want to even acknowledge them? Better to pretend it's all just unavoidable and unchangeable.

I heard a wonderful lecture by a left wing economist today. He said in talking to his hedge fun friends that their position was un tenable beacuse the Hampton's as a flat beach area are not defensible positions. That's the reality of the current economic model. If it goes much further people are going to rise up and bring the revolution like the French did. Discussing where "power really lies" with the WEF's top advisor! How interesting.

  • @jimc3891

This podcast (dates in show notes) is from Oct. 2018. Noah Harari was mostly known for his book “Sapiens.” Little different take today March 2022. Harari is openly advocating for trans humanism while speaking at WEF gatherings. Definitely a disciple of Krause et al. I would like to give Russell the benefit of the doubt that at the time Noah’s belief of humanity’s future were generally unknown, or maybe even unheld. A current update from Russell would be helpful in determining his true identity. Say it ain’t so.

You can see it in goverment policies, and how these policies end up benefitting a really narrow sector of society. You can see it in "trade" agreements and who rips the benefits of them. You can see how the developed countries and their proxies use their military power on the fringes of empire. This guy, Yuval, is the most idiotic intellectual I've ever heard of. We are being plagued by fast food thinkers that are out there to confuse and disempower people by trying to instill hopelessness in their hearts and minds, talking vaguely and not really putting out any model to accurately assess current affairs. I work in public policy. Politicians today are the servants of global neo-liberal capitalism. This is a crony and monopolistic version of capitalism where regulation facilitates and enables rather than regulates. The small capitalist and consumers get shafted. It's a type of fascism which is why the media keeps calling everyone else a fascist. Just picture Obama and Branson, and Trudeau and the Aga Khan.

The local elite will everything and anything to protect their interest. The second level is the state or province. The third level is regional. Several states or provinces is part of regional. An elite owning a company that owns several mines. The fourth level is national. An elite who owns investments that is all over the country. The fifth level is international like walmart, Exxon and t-mobile. The sixth level is what Mellon musk is doing outer space.

I know various billionaires/millionaires who diversify what they own, into residential/multifamily homes all the way to regional mining and rights. Just outlining that people with wealth own stuff, doesn't heal the lack of trickle down or support socially ran capitalistic entities; it also doesn't show where wealth is stifled in society. Harari uses such events to point to the future when machines will do almost all human tasks. Then, most people will be “useless". He writes, “The future of the masses will then depend on the goodwill of a small elite. Maybe there is goodwill for a few decades. But in a time of crisis…it would be very tempting and easy to toss the superfluous people overboard...." quoted from Manu Joseph's article. Each one of them became Israel at Mount Sinai at the giving of the Torah. The only problem is that some of the Oppressive Egyptians that worked for pharaoh also came along legally becoming Israel as well, but in their soul they have no spiritual connection to the teachings of Torah and every other Jew. Those men are power hungry, sadistic individuals whom continue to incarnate into Jewish families (religious & secular), but continue their evil works even against other Jews. "Leader", in our corrupt system of statism, is rulers imposing their will by force, that you may or may not be able to vote for in a rarely-legitimate election, once every few years, where you're probably gonna lose out anyway. But those aren't really leaders. Leaders are followed consensually. If you follow Doctor Phil, he's your leader. I find him silly, so he's not mine. THAT is the only legitimate kind of leader. One you can choose, yourself. Not one chosen for you in some sham mob rule "election" or worse, not even voted on by the ruled at all.

I am an engineer, but I am pretty sure that India was still very agrarian society at Gandhi's time. The analysis of Yuval Noah Harari seems pretty flawed to me. Also, India, being decentralized, did not require somebody to feed it: the villages were pretty self sufficient. So, for that time and that place, Gandhi may have been right (it was 1941 in India); it may have been useful having social harmony before a more gentle approach towards industrialization; also, Gandhi "failed" because he was killed. E.g. After 1971 war the "experts" expected a great famine in Bangladesh, because something similar happened in Russia and China; this did not happen, simply because of the village system that was present in that area and in that time. All the Nehrus in India were not pharaos, they do not create food for the people. Actually, when they tried to put their hand on food by accessing to "industrialized" agriculture (mainly western corporations like Monsanto), they almost created famines. That is India, not Russia or China, so the model for analysis should be different. This big error and the big statements Yuval Noah Harari made without sufficient proof, give me the impression that he is just pushing to impose a specific "frame", and not a genuine analysis based on genuine deduction. Sorry for the poor english.

That sounds like democracy, except those who are given that power abuse of it but they don't want those who give them that power to see that. It's a bit like the Homelander situation in The Boys. He needs to always appear as though he embodies the ideals of those who give him power and hide his true self and evil deeds so he can stay in the favor of these people.

That was a bad reply by Yuval, considering that he also said that more indians are overeating then starving. Also it didn't really make sense, bc Russel was obviously talking about rich people.

negative. I think it's faux intellectualism. See Andrej Karpathy review of Homo Deus: "This book reads like the author read a number of popular science articles, watched some sci-fi movies, attended a transhumanist meetup, got just a bit high on weed and then started writing." The guy is also an extremely liberal jew, so his idealism and lack of practicality is off the charts. Admittedly on balance the books are probably worth reading, but I would just keep his strong bias for abstract idealism in mind.

Idealism? Homo Deus left me a hollow shell. It's fucking grim. Grimmer than anything I could've conceived. Think you need to read the book before basing your ideas off of a review.

@@ausroy087 you think its faux intellectualism based on a review you read written by a clearly biased political pundit.. You would have to be pretty dumb to see a liberal bias in Yuvals books.

@History Time Fair point. Though idealism doesn't have to be positive, I only mean impractical and detached from reality. Marxism isn't particularly positive, it's also soul-crushing and resentment-inducing. @stormkang Lol Karpathy isn't a political pundit.. He's the director of AI at Tesla, one of the most accomplished computer scientists on the planet. I'm going to trust his empirical intuitions over the opinions of a gay jewish lifelong academic.
