Who makes the best scooters? Should you buy a used Piaggio? Piaggio liberty and the Piaggio medley. Here I take a look at 2 used Piaggio’s With prices of £1999 and £2999 which is best? What would I buy? Look around both scooters and then I ride both to see which I would buy! Big thanks to ‪@in2moto480‬ and ‪@MotoGBofficial‬

Yes. I think the only reason Honda tops the charts with their PCX is lack of brand recognition and a lack of dealers. The names are awful too. I think I have said that more than once here. EDIT: For those that don't know these are Aprilla's and Vespa's in a different body. EDIT 2: And there are S versions. EDIT 3: I don't shout about under seat storage. I just type really heavily.

Word goes around as to what's tough and dependable and hold their price, that's why Honda's PCX and Yamaha's NMAX top the sales charts and that in turn is driven mainly by delivery riders who'll soon sniff off a bargain scooter if it's reliable and cheap to run... hence the Honda and Yamahas popularity,

If I was after a 125 scooter as my only transport, I would choose the more powerful Medley . If just to use as a local runabout to save dragging out a larger motorcycle out the garage ,it would be the Liberty . The only downsides could be getting hold of Piaggio. parts quickly , I have heard tales of owners waiting ages for piaggio parts & these models are not as popular as Piaggios Vespa in the U.K.

@@GillyBikes I was nearly tempted to buy a Vespa in 2021 , when looking at my then next bike . It was in absolute mint condition a few years old used ,with very low miles , pearl white ,neat rear rack & fly screen 300 GTS . It had been a bikers second bike ( guilty pleasure ) but his misses told him he had to flog it & keep only one bike . It would of probably been more practical for me at my age & health condition , but I like the larger wheels of a bike & a hand clutch & foot gears . Maybe a Vespa in a couple of years if still around & able to ride, I already have a big collection of N / Soul & Motown CDs to go with one . 👍

Yes, the extra grand is worth it, the larger wheels are better for stability in the damp weather. I purchased a MP3 in June last year, 3 problems: 3 wheel 3 sets of bumps, my knees were high pain in the groin areas, & sets of tyres brakes to replace! The main reason for purchase was I live on a 40' narrow boat so I thought a scooter with under seat storage would be better! but I found the groin hip pain too much after 40 miles so the end replacement was a Moto Guzzi V7 yes no storage but far better in comfort and general use than any scooter outside a town!! I must admit back in the 70's I took part in mag test run of several scooters we did our best to get rid of them as soon a possible.

Great comparison review, Gilly. I don't have experience of the Liberty or Medley myself, however elsewhere on the internet, the Medley has competed well with other scooters. Large wheel size for both is an advantage (16" front, 14" rear.) The Liberty is air cooled. I have owned the Vespa Primavera with the same iGet engine. Great around town. No stop start unlike the Medley with its water-cooled engine. Buyers of 125cc scooters generally do not buy to do out of town journeys. If you are going to do some 60mph travelling, obviously the Medley is better. The greater underseat storage space on the Medley, is an important consideration.

I got a Medley and it does everything. Gone 2 up regularly, done Motorway to Leeds and A580 to Liverpool, B-road trip to Germany and back. Not in the fast lane but it's comfy year round. With the underseat storage, the bag hook and a top box I can do the weekly family shop. Decent suspension and large wheels so pot holed roads hills and light offroad been OK also. No issues in past 2 years and great support from Youles in MCR. Wouldn't choose the Liberty though. Air cooled so it'll run out of puff quicker, smaller too. Compare the Beverly 400 if you get a chance. The Medley can handle most of what you'd throw at it, but the Bev has enough power to do it well.

As a town bike it probably doesn't matter. The more powerful Medley would be better for long rides. Add a top box and you could easily tour on it.

If you have the motivation for it you can tour on anything. These are certainly comfortable enough for long rides. Wouldn’t be my first choice, but I’ve seen people touring on much worse.

Funnily i went through all these about a month ago shopping around for a city scooter with better power then most having only 10 Hp in a 125cc scoot being 110 kg 6'1" my self , i was looking for the most Hp and a step thru frame flat floor like the SH 125i or 350i from Honda these ranging from €4,300 or €5,300 . Both models i saw were still from late 2022. Then i went to look at Kymco with the Agility 160 cc or the CT 300 but then again they were still from 2022 and the later was around €5K on the road and weight nearly 200Kg offering only 22hp. After having a good think i was going to opt for a used Vespa 300 but the ones i found were all well used over ten years old and wanting around €4K and needed another €500+ invested in them to be good to go , at this point i couldn`t get it that i was going to spend as much on a decade old scooter that needed certain amount of maintenance so i went to the dealer thinking id be able to buy a Vespa 300 for a bit more then that ! I was quoted €6.800 for the entry model HPE 300 !! At this point i was devastated as i never wanted to spend more then €5K ,so after doing some research i found out about this Medley and its IGET engine producing 14Hp as the dealer didn`t have any in stock and i didn`t want the Liberty because of its one rear shock absorber and lack of space under the seat even though i could have lived with that so i went again to the dealer and he couldn`t even give me a price on them so i waited for a couple of weeks until they got shipped in and i got one on the road for €4,000 ! Ive been riding it daily and is very good on fuel , dash gives you all the info you need and even shows correct engine temperature not just a warning light of the liquid cooled engine which dearer scooters do not and the best thing about it is the under seat storage and its started with a key and none of that keyless nonsense !

@@GillyBikes Thanks ,my only concern is the engine doesn`t have to be run in and at 300Km it seems to have already consumed 100ml of oil .I spoke to the dealer and he said not to worry and topped it off as the first service is due too 1000 Km .

I used to be a motorcycle mechanic, working for a Honda dealer. When the Honda Sh 125 came out after selling loads and working on them, I put my own money into buying one for 3 mile commute to work and back including dinner time. I could retire my Honda 90. The Sh125 was a fantastic bike..
