Buying a new ratchet is like dating a new girl, so shiny and new, clean and fresh at first. Then after a while a bit worn, cranky and ready for a rebuild.

Wright. Hands down wright tools. Precision balanced and tough as nails and reasonably affordable. Molded to your hand and balanced so it doesn't wear you out working over head and made in USA with old school pride. 14 years of wrenching and they are by far my favorite. You can literally put a knife in a vise and balance it on a knifes edge. It holds up to reasonable load ranges for drive size. 50 lbs/ft 1/4 100 lbs/ft 3/8 250 lbs/ft 1/2 ratchet. Any more than that gets into over sized specialty tools.

Great video Bryan! Comprehensive comparison! I have about 25-30 ratchets myself. My go-to’s are my snap ons 1/2” flex, snap on 3/8” flex and snap on 1/4” fixed head. My 2nd grab would be my SK fixed head 1/2” and 3/8” and my 3rd grab would be my gearwrench 3/8” flex.

PROTO (going on 45+ years, so far). (The only hand tools I've ever broken were Craftsmans in the '70s. Sears quickly swapped them.) Great review, Ty.

If you want to see a huge ratchet collection,go on Midwest Tool Review's channel,he has the biggest ratchet collection I have seen. That drill bit and extraction set, made by Irwin Hanson rebranded as Snap On in a red case. The Irwin Hanson set is in a blue case.Craftsman is coming back to USA made,a tool plant in Dallas Fort Worth which is up and running will be making tools there later this year.I see that longest 3/8 drive ratchet as a serpentine belt tensioner tool as well

Nice video good points covered. I’ve got many over 40 years of use. I’ve got some favorites and some only only use on some bolts that are obstructed.

I agree with you about the Tekton flex head ratchets. Very disappointed when I got mine. Luckily I came across another channel that showed a way to make them stiffer. Cut a thin sliver of clear fuel line and slide it over the detent where the spring goes and reinstall. It adds more spring pressure and makes the flex head harder to move.

All great points! You have a nice collection of ratchets! I have a similar collection but no snap-on’s or Tektons and a lot more GearWrench. I also have Capri ratchets and really like them, especially after their long break in.

Air tools are way underrated. Cheaper, stronger, won't over heat and no battery limitations. Especially if you are just getting started, go air not electric.

I don't find current production GW that good. The older sockets and ratchets was better design and manufacture and considering how cheap they could be with sales it was amazing value .

@@mrb1864 I love the thin profile head and many teeth. I used my 3/8 locking flexhead in a chasis of a heavy truck-tight area. To take off a relay valve. Fit perfectly and took the bolt out without getting stuck. A snap on wouldn't have worked and just maybe a marco would-maybe. I was impressed.

Check out Carlyle Tools from NAPA. They make a really nice "Locking" flex head 13 position ratchets with comfort grip handle. Ratchets are Tekton's achilles heal. OK to good, not great. I use most GearWrench ratchets and getting into Carlyle lately.

These days something for everyone in price quality and design, just takes a while find out what really fits your use and regional availability/support . I think it harder buy a completely junk ratchet than a good one these days. HF Pitts Pro is very usable and they silly cheap . Icon ratchets a poor effort besides the roto heads being half decent, GW and crescent roto 2pc set was good as mechanism pretty much copy of snapon and could be made very smooth with light grease and spring tweaking . I have some quite old GW 84T long flex bought of ebay in 2pc set silly cheap and they been decent, 3/8 been rebuilt with Matco 88T kit . I a big fan of the Matco 88T locking flex. Also have a few MAC but part reason for that is MAC tool guy does good cash deals and he old school good support and easy warranty . I have an extending flex head 1/2 and 1/4 with pretty much generic 72T heads branded welzh and look to be taiwan, they held up a treat & 1/2" seen some abuse and only thing it needed was a shim and bearing retainer on flex screw keep it tight . Snapon do ratchets well but for me price and poor truck dealer in my area led me to other options . Some carlyle ratchets not bad and Facom Koken Hazet worth look as they got odd quality gem ... These days something for everyone in price quality and design, just takes a while find out what really fits your use and regional availability/support .

It's funny - I really like my Icon ratchets, but they're all 3/8" and compare pretty well with their Snap On brothers for me. I'd wonder if you'd like those better.

So then you must really like the husky 100 position,144 position and the 72 tooth ratchets Bryan I was thinking about trying the 144 position ratchet I have the 72 tooth ratchets in the used h149mts set I got from a reseller on eBay for $96 $99 shipped nice set, maybe not a big assortment of the 1/2 inch deep sockets but they have a 194pc set I'd like to get but for a somewhat used socket set I couldn't pass up the h149mts that I was offered.

Stay away from ratchets with the single screw on the faceplate down low like the Pittsburgh pro they have the crappy dual pawls like the very old proto style except much cheeper most of the ratchets on Amazon have them try to get one with a floating pawl or batwing pawl
