Who knew SUGAR CANE could grow here

There is nothing like stopping by a road stand or picking out a couple of stalks of cane at the farmers. Sitting down and chewing on those juicy joints of sweet goodness after a long day to is so refreshing. We saved the tops off of some cane we got from South GA and a couple form the farmer's market. This is what we planted in the spring time earlier this year. Look how much they have grown and produced since then. We will definitely be planting our own cane every year. #sugarcanegrowers #blackfarmers

    I haven't had sugar cane in years. I grew up buying from the vendors on the side of the streets in NY with all the sugar can, oranges, mangoes and watermelon. We'd just chew on the sugar cane all day lol.

    Great Video, Love it and appreciate you posting. I just wanted to say that I'm from Belle Glade, FL. You might know that is the world capital for Sugar Cane & like you, I grew up eating it almost daily... So I am wondering if growing it say in northern GA if you can harvest it and prep for the next season by trimming and burning the tops. I understand that process enriches the soil even more for the next season through the Winter. Did they burn the fields in Jamaica or is that year-round harvesting? What are your thoughts? Thanks again for posting...

    Good-day Humble Servants Homestead! I've been working on our edible landscape for some years now...zone 8a, Central, Texas. Thanks for the knowledge...been thinking about growing sugar cane. What do I look for at the Farmer's Market and do I have to root the canes I find there?

  • @humbleservantshomestead7974

    @humbleservantshomestead7974

    2 жыл бұрын

    Good day Valorie! You should look for what we call eyes on the joints of the cane. That is initially where your new growth will come from. You want your "eyes" to be smooth and not damaged or removed. You can root them in water before you plant them but if the weather is ideal and warm enough for them to grow then you can skip this step and just plant them.

    Which USDA hardiness zone are you guys in and how big was each one of those when you started them,also when did you start them? I'm in zone 7b in Oklahoma and I put mine in 2-2.5 gallon buckets so I can take them in the house when it starts getting too cold because it was about half way through the summer when I finally got some cane that wasn't dead and would grow. Much Thanks

    Hey there! Yes you can plant it but in springtime. You can "overwinter" them in the Fall by loosely "planting" AND heavily mulching them until you are ready to plant them in Spring after the frost has long gone. They thrive in heat.
