I try answering the age old question: who is the best redstoner? Most people will probably tell you that it's @ThatMumboJumbo, but the answer isn't as simple as you might think :p

@@luminescentlion depends on your playstyle, if you gonna build a minigame like decked-out you will need hopper clocks, timing circuits are essential for most complex contraptions, item sorter on the other hand is more useful for ordinary people that don’t need to build their own circuits but rather just want a solution for storage so they can spend more time building houses, unless you’re on scicraft and your item sorter contains every block in the game and is highly advanced. I’d say Impulse made minecraft easier for casual players while the invention of the hopper-clock was a starting stone for advanced technical minecraft in general If you should have learned one thing from this video its that there is no best, just people being incredibly good at different sub-genres of the game

He often isn’t interested in making his stuff the most efficient, and most of his stuff hasn’t been groundbreaking since the much older days of redstone. Regarding pingu and xyor. I've worked with both of them, as has xcom, and we both pretty much agree on this. Pingu probably has the most raw talent out of anyone; though they're both in a class by themselves. However, in more difficult projects, xyor tends to be able to get more done in less time because he isn't as much of a perfectionist. When they work together, what tends to happen is they split off, xyor makes a significant amount of progress, then pingu redoes one small piece of it so fucking well that you basically have to redesign the entire thing around it. This is probably why they both see eachother as the best slimestoner. It's also worth mentioning, those massive tanks and ships and decorational stuff are actually relatively easy and quite algorithmic when you get to the bottom of it, you make one you've made all of em. Compact, functional slimestone tends to be far far more challanging, with the most challanging of all being compact 3 way bedrock breakers. There is no close second.

The thing with Mumbo's content is it quickly it becomes purely uneducational entertainment. I've watched years of his videos and I'm sure anyone would come to the same conclusion after the 20th video : there's not much to be learned in most videos, the video is filled with "and we place a repeater here and an observer there oh man this is complicated". Don't get me wrong, it is entertaining, but little to no time is spent showcasing interesting mechanics, all the time is spent building arbitrary logic to do cool pointless things. Sometimes mojang would add a new feature and mumbo would do some day one surface level experiment with it, having some fun, not push it further. Yes there are some good mumbo videos in the sea of the entertainment-only ones. By comparison, ilmango (just an easy example) will usually explain (and sometimes discover) 1~3 interesting mechanics in each video, so we learn more by watching more. There's no stagnation. Mango gives his thought process going through the high level concepts, and pros vs cons of the different possible ways he considered before choosing the optimal one, instead of reciting what he did off camera or speedtalking through the logic gates. I mean did you know zombie villagers spawn 5x more likely in old growth pine taiga biome, which reduces the rates of spider farms slightly ? Yeah me neither xD Short of sifting the code or wiki to find these gems. Not to mention gnembon, who transcended the realm of technical Minecraft, in more ways than one, and ended up making the tool that all technical players use (carpet)

  • @jasonreed7522

I think part of it is Etho just makes what is fun to him, he doesn't build doors or fully working computers or anything that really fits a competitive category. Instead he invented the hopper clock and many still call it an etho hopper clock. What he does is experiment with new features in survival and finds creative uses for them like making Wilson (basically a tamogatchi), the Pixel, Googler, and his latest shulker search engine, made a 3x3 door minus the center so he can enderpearl through it, and otherwise just makes what he feels like. In a similar vein Tangotek currently likes making fully survival redstone minigames like Decked out, amoung us in Minecraft, Basalt Assault, and also doors amd iron farms. These are incomparables that don't really fit in any of the general categories mentioned in the video. I don't watch sethbling so i don't know what his focus is, but as a rule the popular youtubers are spending too much time making fun and accessible content to be the litteral best redstoner even if it was possible to define.

It would be really interesting to organize a redstone competiotion of some kind, maybe similar in style to programming competitions. There could be individual categories and an overall one that takes all of them into account. Besides the main categories listed in this video such a competiotion could also make use of different time or team categories, since especially bigger redstone systems are often a group effort. In contrast to the methods used in this video, a competition would have the advantage that it puts everyone on the same starting line regardless of how well known they are in the community. I'm sure there are some people out there that are really good but don't really have a strong public presence. Additionally, a redstone competition could work as quality entertainment also attracting spectators who aren't heavily involved in any of the aforementioned areas of redstone. I remember Sethbling did something like this with his 5x5 TNT cannon challenge, and developing that idea further into a proper competition has a lot of potential.

People should see that Mumbo Jumbo doesn't make the most complicated Redstone. Sure he is amazing that is true. But like searching up "fastest 5x5 or 6x6" you will get a massively complicated door. When you look at Mumbo's its not as complicated or he doesn't even attempt it.
