Fun fact - in some of the oldest versions of the myth Megara’s death is because she was murdered - by Hercules. His famous 12 Labours were to atone for the killing of his wife and 3 sons while struck mad by Hera, who loathed him.

I was obsessed with Meg as a child. She was the only truely sassy, indipendant women in Disney when I was little. She was jaded and bound in service to the vilain, yet retained a softer side and was ultrmatly able to set aside her baggage and fall in love. Going so far as to save Hercules’ life. She was badass. She showed that you don’t need to be a god or someone with godlike powers to make a differance in that world where only heros and gods are really part of the narrative.

I think this theory actually makes sense. Memories makes us who we are and how we think, which is why it's so important and precious to us. And without her memories, and her love for Hercules in the past, Meg was doomed to fall for the prince, and he exploited it.

I honestly only recently as an adult learned to appreciate Meg’s badassery. I can’t believe kid me was missing it entirely. But Meg is my favorite now and that’s what matters. She’s a true hero.

Megera is my favorite Disney character. If that pain hadn't been in her character she wouldn't have had the same impact. She's got that wounded bird but tough as nails thing going and still remains sexy as hell. Add in the slave to hades, sorta evil but not really, fallible but willing to acknowledge and make up for her mistakes, and she's actually good person finishes it off as an amazing character. She's also a crush of mine and seems to be an archetype for who I go for in romantic relationships. Disney's creation of her literally shaped my own personality and who I am today. That's impressive. I agree with this theory and thought the same myself when I watched that episode as a child. But now, as an adult, for some reason I imagine the guy who stole her heart the first time was charismatic primarily not narcissistic as Adonis comes across being.

“And its all because of-“ Shampoo ad comes on. I think that was on purpose just to troll us. Meg would be a great spokesperson for shampoo.

As a kid, I thought it was Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. The smoke figure Hades made of him when reminding Meg of the deal looked just like him. Being older now, I realize the error in that thought process being that that story took place centuries before Beauty and the Beast

When he said "it's all because of" an ad came on and said "spectrum noble" I died laughing

I feel this is a weak theory, Adonis isn’t anything like the man Meg seems to describe falling in love with and giving her life to before he betrays her.. since Adonis is clearly outwardly self-centred and arrogant, I find it difficult to believe Meg wouldn’t realise that a second time before believing he is worth her own life.. not to mention Adonis in the animated series was almost certainly never conceived within the scope of the original film.. yes the apparent man Meg brings back to life seems like Adonis, but Adonis doesn’t seem to have the wit to trick Meg into loving him in the first place.. maybe the writers of the animated series wanted to imply Adonis was the man Meg eventually would fall in love with, but I think Hercules the film ought not to rely on the animated series for its continuity I think a more interesting theory is that Megs first love was actually the person she thought he was, someone fully devoted to her, but that Hades brought her partner back with a few personality changes so he’d crush her spirit and make her easier to control.. we’ve seen multiple times that Disney villains will manipulate people/events to get their way, even when they seem to be offering a fair deal to a protagonist-and in any other Disney classic, Meg would have been the princess/main-character. In fact I think this reinforces Hercules as a hero, as he saves Megs life but most importantly restores her faith in humanity and love and with it the control Hades had over her. he rescues her from a fate worst then death.. at least in the true-love centred disneyverse

OH my gosh I totally forgot that the water erased her entire memory including her disgust with Adonis, now it makes sense that her ex was Adonis then he met Helen of Troy and broke Meg's heart

This is a good and fitting message for people to hear. I went through this myself. It takes age, wisdom, reflection and experience to truly understand what happens to you in these relationships. Even the person you least suspect being able to fool you. Not because you wear love goggles, but because you can't possibly believe them smart enough, shows you just how arrogant and immature you can be, without realizing it. It's hard to admit that you've been played, everyone has their own standard perception of self, and pride can cause a lot of denial. Meg is a brilliant character, and a healthy standard for people to see themselves at. We all get played or hurt by something or someone in our lives. It's okay to be hurt. Not everyone has to be honey and roses all the time. 💜💜

When the movie first came out, I actually thought that Meg's ex-boyfriend was Paris and that the woman he left her for was Helen. Given what the TV show has shown us though, I agree with Wotso's idea of it being Adonis.

I had this theory around for quite some time. And honestly, I always thought that Hades was behind everything all the time. She could have been in a relationship with Pain/Panic (or both, we see that they can combine to transform into bigger beings) while being transformed, and Hades tricked her into selling her soul so she could "save" her boyfriend (who was no boyfriend at all).

Just watched Hercules the other day it's one of my favorite Disney movies

I think that the "moral of the story" to Disney's Hercules is actually shown through Meg, and that everything in the movie prior to her introduction is backstory on her learning her lesson... like, we have to know that Hercules is a great guy before we can cheer her faith in him on.

re:pronunciation of Hercules' second wife Deianira, it's Ancient Greek, and Greek and Latin both draw from a lingual lineage that means it would have every vowel pronounced. It's likely also to have a hard, rolled 'r' so it would come out something like [Day-ah-nee--ah]. Dei is a fairly consistent syllable in both Greek and Latin so if you've heard one you know the other. Think 'deity' perhaps?
