Yeah me neither, it's like my news tab and my youtube tab molded for a second. Rutte certainly has positive qualities that make him a good leader, if he's in need of a spine he has a steel one. But he's also quite capable of lying with a smile on his face. He's not corrupt or greedy though, highly unlikely to be shown to have a history of assaulting women or the other things you might find in men who get power.

It's spelled 'compromise' and no, Rutte doesnot have that ability, that is a myth. I have been on 3 'handelsmissies' (trade missions) with mr. Rutte and he is a different man, when he is not the center of attention. He shows little interest in other people, than those he assumes to be the right people to talk to, he cannot be trusted for his words and most will notice this behaviour pretty fast. When he is around people he doesnot know, he is out of his comfort zone. He is by far not the extrovert, humorous man he always portrays to be. A wolf in disguise.

I'm sure along with the letter there were some other promises/rewards offered to Orban. Orban only opposes things to get a benefit for Hungary, he'll always give in for the right price, just like he seemingly left the meeting when there was a vote to help Ukraine some time ago. He never voted in favor so he kept his word and the others got what they wanted for a negotiated reward that wasn't made public.

Dutchman here, Rutte has become an almost larger than life figure in Dutch politics. He’s an extremely good debater, and his charisma made him get away with things he really shouldn’t get away with. Almost no one could beat him electorally, to the point that parties were formed just to pull his party to the left or right. It was often said that the only person who could end his rule was himself. I have no doubt that he will be a figure of authority within NATO, especially given that he tends to be a lot more brazen when he isn’t dealing with party politics.

Their party campaign program is just that, a campaign program to sway voters in their favour. What the PVV has actually pushed in the past, and for the new coalition, is anything but socialist. Things like tax cuts for the extremely wealthy and corporations, further cuts to public services, scapegoating of immigrants (especially of Muslim and Arab immigrants). The PVV also openly spread insane fascist dog whistles such as the great replacement. Which shouldn't come as a shock, as the PVV base of support has always had sizeable fascist and neonazi elements. @@leanderbuijtendijk6241 i think that for this time Rutte is the right choice. but NATO should appoint (way) more people from Eastern Europe on roles that assist Rutte (so other top positions), and that would be a great way for them to gain experience in the top of an organisation like NATO. and when the current tensions with Russia, China and the US boil down that experience would make them a good choice for the next "election" for the top position. we need to choose the right person at the right time, and not just choose a person because it's a change from the previous choices. and like it or not, but right now Rutte might be the best choice.

Every sane and knowledgeable person knew if some lines are crossed this will happen. Stoltenberg even got it sent to him on black and white as he himself admitted.. Btw we ( yes even me ) considered this could happen if... 16 years ago not 10. Personally i thought that the west would wake up and stay behind the obvious last red line. Btw i think Poland is safe.... and i see a scenario that Poland actually becomes the most powerful military power in mainland Europe if sh... hits the proverbial fan lol International relations is a simple game and is at least 5000 years old. it was and is almost the same and little has changed. You want a simple example? one great power supports the reign of a king deposing the previous king which had alligned with the opposing great power. This great power attacks to put their king back on throne. The small kingdom gets devastated. The 2 great power fight eachother on the ground of this small kingdom. If one wind ... well case is closed. If not they negotiate about what to do and stop the bloodshed ( money, treasury lol ) and risk of rebellions at home because of too much troops being away or invasions. So they come to agreements. Either they partition this kingdom. Or they exchange..... you take cilicia back...we take Armenia and we both declare ouw victory to our people. We'll fight later on some other issue .... no hard feelings. They even might decide that one decides who will rule the kingdom, while the other should assign that person as a king. Again both powers claim a victory. You can find 100 of these between the Romans and persians in their long rivalry. In conclusion.... we knew what could happen..... and now we know how to settle it. One party does not want to settle it

There are more reasons. For one: Europe has been held hostage by the USA since WWII, spending most of its defence budget on USA weaponry. Not all, most. Word even goes, that NATO prevented the EU from properly expanding. Mais bon. Then there is NATO vs the USA vs the Pacific. The USA spends 3.35% of their GDP on defence. How much of that 3.35% is spent on NATO (North Atlantic TO), how much is spent on USA-only interests (the Americas) and how much is spent in the Pacific? Europe's main interests are Europe and Africa. We might have a lot of financial stakes around the world, but we have no defence spending there.

A couple of years ago, Rutte was a guest at Zomergasten, a Dutch talkshow/interview program. I like it, because it's an all-evening show and it gives the interviewer a lot of time to really get deeper into the material. Anyway, if you can, you should watch the episode with Mark Rutte, because it does explain a lot of why he is the kind of man that he is. Why he rather avoids dealing with unpleasant things, for instance. His father was a prisoner in a Japanese interment camp, his mother was the sister of his father's first wife, who was killed in the camps. Mark Rutte had a brother who died of aids. All very traumatic memories, but neither of them were ever talked about in the Rutte's household. And he doesn't think that's potentially damaging to one's mental health. It paints a picture of a man who never learned how to handle negative emotions, so he avoids them. And that's something I recognize in how he does politics. He doesn't solve problems, he waits untill the problem becomes a crisis, and then he can't avoid it any longer. But he never takes responsibility for it either, everything just seems to happen, without there being any reason for it.

He is a great politician, meaning he's skilled at dodging any real responsibility and slithering through the political landscape of today seemingly unscathed. As a Dutch citizen, I have spent my teen years with this man in office, slowly dismantling important social structures without taking any accountability for the impact, directly contributing to the division and polarization we have to deal with today. His pragmatism and lack of a good moral compass, makes him a good politician, but a bad leader.

He just found himself an excuse to get real hung up over, way more than was reasonable for his or anyone's standards and collapsing the government was completely avoidable. In his long tenure as MP, this may be the single most outwardly bad thing he's done though. Dutchman here: I have not been a fan of his political actions in most cases, and the way scandals seem to leave him unharmed. Or the fact that he has a tendency to lie about certain things. I would never ever vote for him and most people were tired of him. That being said, I would 100% vote for him being the leader of NATO. Like you said, you need a specific set of skills, and I dont know anyone who seems to have all of these like he does. Though I usually dont agree with him on domestic policies, everyone will tell you that he is a good man. A kind man, simple, decent, humble. He would never have a personal scandal, perhaps a political one, but thats it. He know how to talk to people, he knows how to play the game. Its weird. I wanted nothing more than for him to leave office, but now we have a waay shittier government on the right and its just a matter of waiting it out. Excited to be hearing about Rutte still. The defense spending plummeting under Rutte's watch is an aftereffect of budget cuts that were already instated in the 90s and continued by coalitions before Rutte. He had little influence in this. His party (VVD) has always been in favour of more budget for the dod, and no one in his position could have increased it. He was prime minister in 2014, when the MH-17 disaster happened and NATO made it's commitment. He could have raised defence spending to 2% GDP gradually from then on and would have reached the target in 2017. But no. He never was interested in security in the first place.
