My mum isn't in any religion, but she loved the story of Lilith as Adams first wife so much, that she named me Lilith (it's my second name). At school I had the subject religion. One day when I was six or seven years old my teacher asked me if I knew where the name was from and I said it was Adams first wife and she didn't belive me... All I can remember was that she said that my mum was stupid to name me after a demon. The next week my mum printed out copy of a well known dictonary explaining the story of Lilith and took that to my teacher.

Well then she was right(For what was discussed in this video). But she is still a mean-ass teacher. Even if he was factually correct kinda, you were a child and the Lilith Interpretation is something she should have at least known of if she teaches religion. Because even by the logic of Lilith not being Adam's first wife, then she wasn't a demon eighter, cuz the only evidence for that can be discredited the same way. I don't get why some teachers are so pathetic that they would call a child's mom stupid to feel superior. And over a name so nice and cute as Lith

I literally started wheezing when I realised that there is a possibility that some of the people in ancient times heard a desert owl (Strix hadorami) sometime in the night and got scared shitless after seeing them stare back at them with their big ol eyes. I love how Trey's consistent premise is that all sorts of cryptids and religious creatures around the world have possibly been mistaken for owls. This is amazing. Edit: just watched the rest of the video and my point still stands. I wouldn't be surprised if the demon herself was inspired by the creatures of the night, so while she wasn't necessarily an owl in the original designs, that doesn't change the possibility of humans getting scared by owls throughout eons.

Most scholars agree it refers to an owl though. As much as piecing together the myth has done to explain it's persistence it relies on a lot much later interpretative work.

It make no sense at all. This is put out by a non believer and should be taken as such. Chapters 1 and 2 was written by Moses, that is it, no one else and both chapters are about the 6th day of creation. Chapter 1 tells the reader that God created male and female. Then on the 7th day God rested. Chapter 2 just goes into more detail of the creation of the two. That's it, nothing more. Moses tells us that God senses Adam's loneliness so He makes a help mate by putting Adam in a deep sleep then takes a rib from his side. From this rib He creates Eve. Remember, this is still the six day of creation, in chapter 1. There is no Lilith, who disobeys and runs off, that is ridiculous. If the Lilith story is true, then God is not who He says He is, sovereign. Chapter 3, the fall of man, is meaningless, Lilith would have already sinned against God, the rest of the Bible, bogus. Just like the word "day" in Genesis 1 meaning millions of years, is just impossible, so Lilith being created in chapter 1 and Eve in chapter 2, also impossible.

@@TREYtheExplainer Hey, the actual myth- history of the stories and how they changed over the centuries is super interesting. I think most atheists agree with me- or would if they saw your videos. I've never been in any church services or masses or whatever they're called, but I've became more and more interested in these origin stories over the years. All the hints to the even older stories...fascinating. LIlith was also one of my favourite things form the old bible lore.

I’d love to know more about how lilith went from a type of demon-like creature to a single figure. Coming from a more neopagan online circle, it’s pretty common to see people talking about her as a figure with a roughly set history. The transition between basically a succubus and the pseudo-goddess she is now seems really interesting.

I have read the Bible . I dont remember any women in the garden/book of genesis by that name . Or anywhere else . . Lilith is first mentioned in ancient...... Babylonian...... texts as a class of winged female demons that attacks pregnant women and infants. Not from the biblical texts .

He explains the subject so well. Without a familiarity with Judaism or Christianity, it would be a sort w/o any point of reference. I did have Christain experience since birth, but only heard of her a few years ago. After a History Minor and further Research in the era History and Religion History, Yale University, I have a fully greater clarity on Christainity - both the Roman Version and the more authentic "pre-Roman". It is a subject with many turns. However I will say Jesus Teachings (and he wasn't peddling a New Religion, he was interpreting the Ancient Knowledge and the Hebrew Texts, the Christains "Old Testament". Point is, *"He was teaching what Quantum Physics Discovered in the 20th Century and defines as the Universal Laws, particularly the "Law of Attraction and Law of Vibration" That is fact. I encourage folks to remain "open to all possibilities" rather than make commitments. lol The folks that edited the Bible truly did a disservice to the greater Teachings, but it was Politically motivated by Roman Emperor Constatine. Interesting if you like History. The India Religion "Hindi" actually has had much more efforts in keeping the authentic story of the Religion. Ancient Vedic on every subject amazes me with how much those people knew about the Universe, Astronomy, the Ancient Vedic Astrology is mind blowing accurate (I studied Ancient Vedic Astrology for 4 years, incredible knowledge the Ancients had, and yes it is a true Science/Math/Philosophy, the Profession Vedic Astrologers are like any other Profession, there are Genius Level Professionals and there are some sorta lazy and some whom use it for profit only.) There are two types of churches. The first church is founded by people who pursue transcendental principles and service a higher order of being. The second church is founded by the first church for containment and exploitation of the damned. Consider this: If there is no forgiveness or redemption in Christianity, once you have sinned once and doomed yourself, there isn't a reason to have restraint for rape and murder. In comes the second church - it is a political entity with empty rituals and social networking to get destructive fringe elements to be profitable in a material sense or at least neutralized in a criminal one. It does this by preaching tolerance, forgiveness, redemption, and offering some means of social integration. Everyone has access to the higher order principles, and anyone can found a first church. Every civilization reaches its apex with an order of esoteric mystics and warrior poets. God does exist, and he makes himself known to people who want to understand. Few people are curious though, and are satisfied with the bullshit rituals and empty platitudes because it provides security, identity, etc. For the curious though, there are frontiers of being worth pursuing if you are capable of asking the right questions.

Church/school/society/etc CAN NOT tell everyone what to think about everything (unless living in a dictatorship) because interpretation will be different for everyone. We need to stop expecting SO MUCH from everyone else but have small, if any, expectations of ourselves.

Karl Timmerman, the right question is: how do you know that god exist? And which god btw? And how do you know that there’s just one? If you think about it you will realize that the only reason you think that there’s one particular god is because you have grown in a society which considers the Bible a “holy” book. The same Bible which contains Lilith, the Nephilim, Satan, talking snakes and countless other imaginary things. Either you believe that everything the Bible says is true and therefore those things are real or you believe a lot of it is just myths and parables. If the latter how do you know what is real and what is myth? How do you know that god is not just another myth? And please don’t come up with “without god there’s no reason to restrain from rape and murder”! Humans are a social species and as all social species they have *evolved a cooperative behavior* because it is vital for survival. If aggressive behavior against the members of their own group were rife humans would have got extinct ages ago. Besides, as the countless cases of sexual abuse of children in churches show, Christianity rather promotes rape than being a deterrent. And all stats show that secular countries have lower criminality rates than religious ones.

Yeah this isn't his first biblical rodeo. And I hope it isn't his last. Tieing the Old Testament to other stories that were happening in parallel, and older at the time makes the Old Testament a much better and more rich document IMO.

In 2006, I heard about Lilith, Adam’s first wife, on the History Channel. A few days later, I was forced to go to synagogue (my family is Jewish.) So, bored out of my mind, I started looking for Lillith in the English translation of the Old Testament in Genesis and couldn’t find her. Thank you for all this info. It’s nice that after being that weird kid who was genuinely curious about this stuff, I can find fellow adults who are just as weird and curious. 😉

There is a word in Arabic similar to "Qippoz" which is "كابوس" Kabos Maybe this word is related to the original Hebrew word.

Very interesting video! I checked my Norwegian copy of the bible and Lilith was just translated as Lilit, but qippoz was translated as "small owls" which I found interesting. The whole verse of the qippoz taken out of context just makes it sound like a children's verse about owls and falcons (not vultures) laying eggs.

@Normies Begone From This Realm i find the similarities between the epic of gilgamesh and the mythologies of the surrounding locations really quite interesting. From my research, (correct me if I'm wrong I'm not an expert I'm just writing an ameteur essay on the origins of writing, I'm not qualified in linguistics or history) i understand that the epic of gilgamesh is the oldest piece of fiction discovered, and with the Mesopotamian culture being as influential to the surrounding areas as it was it shouldnt be surprising to see many similarities. However i do think the sheer amount of similarities is pretty incredible, it seems like the epic of gilgamesh is the root for a huge amount of tales and mythology and while to me its not strange to see links to Gilgamesh every now and again I am always surprised to see how, quite frankly, astoundingly influential the poem really was.

Gilgamesh probably goes back to something older too. I'm not sure how true it is but I read somewhere recently that the flood isn't actually traced back to the epic of gilgamesh but some common ancestor of the religions instead.

So if legend holds that Lilith was the first wife of Adam and left before Adam and Eve ate the apple, then Lilith must be deemed to be without original sin. In essence, she is the perfect human and remains in a state of grace.

I assume she sinned against God by embracing darkness. Hard to say any of that happened, we don't even know for sure if Adam and eve were real or if it was parable. I don't have faith in those as facts because it's not important to my personal faith

So Lilith left to start her own life, because Adam refused to allow her to be an equal. She did not embrace any darkness, yet she has literally been demonized for wanting equality. Lucifer, also wanted equality for all and was also demonized by the bible for this. Neither "embraced darkness" they just wanted fairness. For no one to be submissive to anyone. Really makes you rethink the bible and how it was written to control...

The multiple tellings of the same story sounds a lot like what is found in the Nihon Shoki. It deals with the origin story of Japan and the author or authors will write a story once and then might do it again saying something like 'it has also been said that' or 'in another account it went like', usually the versions are only slightly different.

Wow, I found this fabulously interesting, and well-explained.

I’m not particularly religious but I love the mythology surrounding religion- I’d be very happy to see more of this kinda stuff!

Fascinating. We have so much more information and understanding now. In college in the 1970s we learned the Lilith story that has her as Adam's first wife. She was a symbol of the feminist movement of the time, and I still like to think of her in that way, but I'm glad I know now about the two different authors and the redundant stories. Thanks!

This video was playing on my 2nd monitor while I was working on a project, then I decided to glance at the video and the horrific image at @16:17 is on screen. It's 3am and I'm alone in my room. Scared the shit out of me. It gave me a boost to soldier on on what I'm doing though.

While not the same situation its similiar to lucifer as he is only mentioned once and is probably just a translation mistake for venus (it couldve been for something else, i forgot) but due to the circumstances it was used in and it being a translation the scribe writing it down just decided to use the word lucifer
