He has a point when he said “whoever is going to lead must have their spouse and children living in the country”. Over the past 25years the leaders (presidents, prime minister, ministers, deputies and senators) all would have their families staying in the western countries, while the leaders would be stealing the countries money to send to their families abroad, for the to purchase luxury homes, send their kids to very expensive private schools, buying expensive cars, clothes and etc. Because they don’t have their families living in the country, therefore they don’t have any interest to building infrastructures and to provide security.

When it comes to Haiti, it’s crucial not to accept everything at face value. Critical thinking is vital. I watched this report, and some of the statements in this report have been contested. It’s essential to remember that the situation in Haiti didn’t begin with the prime minister’s departure. There’s a rich history that both precedes and follows. But, to understand what is going on currently, you have to look at the year or so before the president, Mr. Jovenel Moïse, was assassinated. The story about Barbecue being an enforcer for the president is well-contested. This was part of a smear campaign to blame the president for all the ills and see what sticks. Basically, there was an insidious operation to discredit the president by all means since he did not fit the typical corrupt Haitian politician. He was actually trying to perform his duty instead of figuring out how to enrich his cronies. Jovenel was actually trying to complete some projects that could benefit the country in the 21st century (e.g., electrification, road, water management, etc.). He also determined that the country was bleeding money through corruption. His policy changes (i.e., terminating/renegotiating bad contracts) were causing hundreds of millions of dollars in losses to some corrupt businessmen and families. If this continued into the next presidential term, it would reach billions. His leanings toward countries that were not on the US favorite list (i.e., Turkey, Venezuela, China) didn’t help his case. Unfortunately, when Haiti became a democracy, Haitians failed to grasp one of the most important aspects of a democracy: the peaceful transfer of power. The fact is that when a president is elected, he should be allowed to complete his term unless he has been impeached and not because you disagree with his policy. Therefore, Haitians are often manipulated by crooked politicians via traditional media in Haiti to protest and request the deposition of presidents they are not happy with. The Haitian presidency is a (5-year) term with non-consecutive re-election. This is actually detrimental as it’s like there are two people taking turns being president. So, the corrupt business people hired firms that manufactured many human rights violations against the president that some in the international community willfully ate up. They also paid the media, people on the streets, and gangs to raise the level of violence and religious leaders to rise against this monster of a president called Jovenel. For those unaware, the gangs in Haiti were a functioning branch of crooked government officials and business people. They are well-armed and connected. There was an ongoing joke in Haiti that not even a dog could die on the streets, and Jovenel would not be blamed for it. From an outside observer, you could believe that Jovenel was the most unpopular person in the world. This illusion possibly convinced the Columbian mercenaries that their mission would be a walk in the park. In the end, everyone hated Jovenel for different reasons. I learned about him only after his death. When Jovenel did not resign after all the protests, he was assassinated, and his body was riddled with bullets to send a signal that disobedience wouldn’t be tolerated. His projects were put on hold indefinitely; even though some were completed and were beneficial, they were kept from being brought online. This was done to ensure that he was not viewed as a successful president. This operation was partly successful. It removed Jovenel from the presidency and stopped his push to change the Constitution via a referendum to a less corrupt government. One constitutional idea was to decentralize the government into a federal one, with each of the 10 departments becoming a state with a governor. Similar to the 50 US States, we should elect a President along with a vice president instead of a Prime Minister and allow the diaspora to be included instead of excluded. However, due to social media, some of the truth about Jovenel’s successes is being shared online, and Haitians are realizing that they may have been duped into loathing a great leader. This is possibly why they are sticking with Guy Phillipe, who not only reminds them of Jovenel but promises to continue along the same track as the slain president. The recently resigned PM was involved in the cover-up of the assassination. He had a corrupt judge clear all the guilty individuals(not already in custody) and blamed Jovenel’s wife for the crime. With a wacky motive that she wanted to be President so badly, she knocked off the president. Even though none of the captured killers had any verifiable links to her. Mrs. Moise barely survived the assassination if not for quick medical assistance. With their control of the media, they managed to distribute this farce of an investigation internationally, and the international media ate it. Notably, the PM was found to have communicated twice with one of the assassins on the night of the murder and was miraculously cleared. I know this story sounds incredible, but that is Haiti for you. On Barbecue, I ask that you take this with a grain of salt. However, based on his recent behavior of uniting the gangs (armed militias) against the corrupt politicians, it seems plausible. Barbecue claims that he only went rogue after being set up; that is, he launched a counter-gang operation, where the target was informed of the operational details, and he lost men. According to him, he was set up because he had earlier declined to perform an extra-judicial killing and was labeled as expendable. The alleged individual who framed him is known to be untrustworthy because, following the assassination, he made public statements in interviews claiming that the Columbian mercenaries had found over 30 million USD stashed in Jovenel’s home during the raid. There is no evidence of this money. There was a photo of this purported money being spread online, but it turned out to be some photos from a drug bust in a different part of the world. This large stash of money was most likely a smear operation to link Jovenel’s assassination to a drug deal gone bad. The operation where Barbecue was involved in a massacre is also contested. People who were involved in the operation later admitted that some of the victims of the killings were cadavers obtained from the local morgue. So, the 70-plus casualty is contested. And some eyewitnesses were paid for their testimonies to implicate the president. Therefore, based on the extensive operation to dislodge Jovenel from the presidency, it is plausible that Barbecue was just a pawn. And now, he looks pretty determined to attack the system that allegedly destroyed his life. Since the assassination of Jovenel, for almost three years, Barbecue has been giving literally the same type of speeches, where he has lofty ideas of fixing Haiti. However, it never materialized because he had no ground support from anyone with military capability. He had public support, but whenever he called to arms, no one showed up. After Guy Phillipe and BSAP entered the arena, they both stated that many of the armed militia were also victims of the system and were not their enemies. I believe this empowered Barbecue. Since Guy Phillipe is calling for a peaceful revolution, Barbecue has publicly stated that he doesn’t feel the same and is for a very violent revolution.

Yes, I was born in Haiti but immigrated to the US as a pre-teenager. I had not kept up with the politics in Haiti until the assassination of the president. I’ve heard so many negative things about this president I had to do my research. For instance, my mother was angry at him for not being able to travel and move freely around the country. A close friend’s wife was furious at Jovenel for supposedly ordering the killing of a famous up-and-coming journalist from her hometown. Supposedly, Jovenel was causing all the violence to remain in power after his term supposedly ended. I told her that didn't make any sense, but with all the media playing the same narrative, it was difficult. So most people just believed what they heard, and Jovenel was toast. But, after the assassination, many truths have come to light, and with non-traditional media, the absolute truth is coming out. I believe this assassination has backfired. Now, Haitians have become aware of what has been going on and will no longer tolerate it. So right now, the gangs (armed militia) have united to overthrow the current illegitimate government. They have forced the corrupt PM to resign. Now, the International Community (IC) is trying to install an interim government made up of the very same people who allowed the corrupt PM to remain for almost three years. The people who have gone through this IC process many times will not stand for it. They feel since there was no hope until Guy Philippe showed up in the arena and, for the most part, has been pushing for a peaceful transition, and he should take the helm to any interim government. The armed militia also supports Guy Philippe at the head since he plans to hold a reconciliation council when he’s at the top. This has caused some friction since many people have been severely traumatized by the gangs and can't ever forgive them.

Don’t get confused. For years this country has received billions and billions in foreign aid and it always ends up in the pockets of a corrupt few, all while the people of Haiti suffer and eat mud. Nothing ever gets better- only worse. Barbecue said enough is enough. He is fighting for the people.

If I lived there I would say the same thing, how can you have a President of a country allow another counties armed forces to police your citizens and not call it a soft coup. We understand that the government and people of Kenya want to help resolve issues and restore order but its not thier place. Haitian poltics has received too many outside interference. I pray for my cousins in Haiti. I firmly believe that you need to choose your own way. I support you because you taught the African world the value of freedom and the need to sometimes fight and die for the ideals that you hold as truth. Sincerely, Marcus Dwayne Blackman Gonzalez
