Social media/regular media/and massive uptakes in porn consumption - breast lifts, augmentations, and BBLs aren't done to just look better while clothed, and the more mainstream media/music veers into softcore porn the more we will see ppl (mainly women) going to dangerous lengths simply to even compete.

I'm from a native tribe in Borneo and until 70/80-ish years ago the en vogue thing to do was to completely pluck the eyebrows. Both men and women did it. We also tattooed most of our bodies, stretched our earlobes with heavy brass jewellery and the men would pierce the upper part of their ears to decorate them with boar's tusks. If I was born around that time I'd probably just follow along because it's just expected. I wouldn't even consider it now, too much blood, sweat and tears to go through a process that takes years to complete (my grandparents started getting their tattoos around 9 years old). Anthropologically, we as humans regardless of culture have their "seasons" of beauty. Some more physically dangerous than others. Being too much of an outlier could mean social isolation and rejection. We would also have to consider the hegemony of it all.

To me, it’s wild how rampant cosmetic procedures have become. It’s almost becoming the “norm” on social media. I find it sad that so many people feel that their features aren’t good enough. There is so much societal pressure to be “attractive” to fit in. I feel bad for younger generations, since it seems like this is all they are exposed to. It’s dystopian to me. I hope society changes and becomes more accepting of normal variation in features. Beauty is so much more than outward appearance.

I think the pendulum might start swinging the opposite way soon . The celebs who spoke up about this were refreshingly surprising to hear. Why does everyone aspire to look the same? I can barely tell celebs apart these days, unless they’ve characatured themselves. Either way they can’t always change it back even if they wanted to. Such a shame they felt they had to do this.

for anyone who’s read uglies by scott westerfield, it’s a dystopian novel that is literally this. at 16, everyone in the society gets EXTREMELY invasive plastic surgery, marking their journey into adulthood, or going from one of the “Uglies” to one of the “Pretties”. among these plastic surgeries like replacing the skin and glass eyeballs and harder teeth and perfect features, they give you a lobotomy 😍 so society was entirely brain dead! and the pretties’ lingo is explained by this cuz they talk like toddlers lol. i feel like with social media taking peoples attention spans and normalization of plastic surgery and beauty standards, it’s only a matter of time.

I started getting botox last year for migraines, and now I would say I have a "poker face". It's definitely impacted nonverbal communication. Sometimes it's a plus, like if someone is trying to frustrate me, my face doesn't show it, so they don't get the reaction they want and they stop. On the other hand, I think I look less friendly. I don't think my face communicates as much interest as it used to, and I'm finding that conversations are ending more quickly because it looks like I don't care. Overall I don't regret botox because it's helping my chronic pain, but it definitely has changed things.

Its capitalism. We are trained to feel insecure, devalued, and less worthy from a young age because people that feel that way are less likely to fight for themselves and other people when their rights are taken away. Less likely to fight against the injustices of governments, corporations, and their employers. Capitalism is a system that relies on profit over people. We see it in healthcare, insurances, oil industry, weapon manufacturing, fast fashion, housing, food systems, etc. And in some way or another daily, we are told over and over again that money/profit is worth more than us.

If anyone person wants to get something done to make themselves feel better, i don't have an issue with it. However, I have a strong objection to celebrities getting procedures to meet a standard of beauty that is continually changing and the expectations society is putting on girls to look. So many of these celebrities and influencers look exactly the same. I'm honestly tired of it and really sad that people now feel that they have to meet only with expensive treatments.

To me personally, it's wild that so many people get cosmetic procedures and it's just common now. Because for me, I don't even wear make up because I don't like it. I genuinely don't like that when I wear makeup, and I see myself in the mirror and I don't look like myself. It's just a very weird feeling for me to look in the mirror, in pictures, and not see myself. It's not even that I think I'm so pretty and I like how I look so much. I do have insecurities. But there's no one else I would rather look like than myself, if that makes sense??? It's like, this is what I look like. I'm neutral about it. I accept it. And that's that. I'm in my 20s now and I've had older women tell me that I should wear makeup and dress up when I go outside because I'm an adult now, like what??? I don't care. My mom doesn't wear makeup either and she's in her 50s and she's fine. I wear clothes that I think look good and feel comfortable. Men can go outside looking like whatever and nobody bats an eye. Why is it not acceptable to go outside looking like myself and wearing comfortable clothes? Weird.

Such an important topic to address! I can understand there is almost a pressure now to be getting all sort of treatments, when they might not even really want it or need it and without knowing the side effects, sometimes I’m like should I be getting stuff, and then I’m like nooo, but I feel some women feel pressured to be now having this filler look, I am so happy I learned about fillers before even considering them, people don’t know the long term effects and now younger generations are getting really invasive treatments. Also how are lasers or resurfacing treatments plastic surgery? I believe plastic surgery has to be done in the most safe non invasive way and you need a very objective plastic surgeon by your side, it’s important to also point out how this relates to body dysmorphia and how it can be exacerbated.

I did not get my breast reduction and lift until I was in my 40’s and it has been an absolute life changer. I wanted it since I was 14 years old. It was about quality of life first but wearing whatever I want for the first time in my life is also an amazing feeling. I had upper blephroplasty done 2 months ago. It has made a huge difference for me, i no longer feel half asleep because my eyes are half closed. I did a lot of research and went to a clinic that specialised in Blephroplasty. For me, it was worth every penny.

Madonna was aging like fine wine but then I donno what happened. Tbh I can understand why celebs wanna get work done. Imagine you were the epitome of beauty, and that's all everyone ever valued you for, and honestly aging is a hard thing to accept. But I agree the putting plastic surgery in the "self care" package is a dangerous. Especially since younger and younger people are pushed into it. Especially for women. Yes you can say, it's their choice, but as someone who doesn't apply make up much, bad skin, make up isn't gendered, but women are expected to put it on to look "presentable". It isn't a choice, it's an expectation, and working against that is much harder. In places like sk, to get fixed if you don't conform to the beauty standards is wayyy too normal. And to be honest I get it. If I had the resources, I'd get some things done, and with no one else telling me when enough is enough I just wouldn't know. And with celebs, they get scrutinized for getting things done, but also if they don't look like themselves 15-20 years ago. Yes, price of fame and all that, but they are also human, and most times the media crazed generation forgets that.

Is the fact that most people have empty brains. If you don't fill your mind with knowledge, that precious space will get filled with everybody else's opinions about everything, since those brains had no information to process and then landing on their own conclusions. F society, I swear, when you educate yourself, and keep yourself busy on meaningful things, you don't have time to ruminate. Even if your depressed, if you make the conscious effort to give the first step, the second one follows invariably. Let's educate ourselves, smart, educated woman became superwoman. You just have to choose your superpower, and tribe to enjoyed it with. Much love to all❤🎉❤

I'm very scared because I have hooded eyes and my doctor told me I might need surgery if, as I age, the eyelids droop and cause me vision problems. But I noticed the hooded eyes run in the family and what seems to happen, is that the area gets sunken with age, instead of droopy, so I hope that's what happens to me. It happened to my mom...🙁

This video is a great discussion and as a long time viewer I know Cassandra doesn’t really follow celebrity news and such . . . I am so sorry to even comment this, but is that James Charles near the end of the video? If so, I hope she’s not aware of the controversy surrounding him! It has nothing to do with the beauty industry (the issues with him), and I was honestly shocked to see Cass use a clip with him in it! I hope I am wrong, and I hope if I’m not she just didn’t realize who he is.

I love this deep dive into the beauty industry. But I also have to note that as a black woman I think it’s harmful to say the way you look or the color of your skin doesn’t matter. Because for some of us it does whether we want it to or not. We have to be uplifting but also realistic.

Part of it is definitely the way people are treated in everyday life. Being bullied has serious impacts on people's perception of themselves. I've been bullied my whole life for how naturally thin I am - and yes, I do mean my whole life including into adulthood. Even during my pregnancy, people felt it was somehow appropriate to comment on my body expressing disappointment that I wasn't "bigger" or "showing soon enough". It truly leaves me feeling so insecure and wishing that I had more "curves". If people would catch on to the idea that it's not appropriate to comment on other peoples bodies, especially negatively, I think there would be less desire to compare ourselves and therefore less desire to change ourselves.

Hey Cassandra- I think it might be a bit mean to have Zack Efron in your intro talking about people getting plastic surgery too much. He has changed after a well documented painful injury that shattered his jaw and as a result had to strengthen certain facial muscles so he can like use his dang jaw. I agree plastic surgery is going so far but let’s be fair.

I really do not know how someone can get “beauty enhancement procedure(s)” and it not be out of comparison to others or beauty standards. I would genuinely like to understand because I hear people say, like in the video, “don’t do anything because of comparing your self to beauty standards/celebrities or because someone else thinks you would look better but because you just want to look different, it makes you feel good”. I honestly am not sure if it’s possible to make these decisions without any comparison, but idk.

Theory: I think there are less nose jobs because of apps like TikTok, where looking like everyone else makes one blend into crowd where as if you have a “unique”, “unusual” and or “eye catching” features are more likely to grab attention and in turn increase ones viewer’s or followers. I do also think that we are now slowly seeing people embrace their these natural feature that can, to some people make them seem more” unique”. Example, when I was in school a lot of my friends hated their freckles or their red or strawberry blonde hair, whereas now people are literally getting freckle tattoos and dying their hair orange, red or strawberry blonde (all which are beautiful whether natural or not). Also, thanks to the incredible drag queens fab makeup skills and we can easily access tutorials on KZread to teach us how to drastically charge or highlight our features from day to day without going under the knife. Trends are moving faster than ever and for those who want to follow these trends or at least some of them, having surgery or tweeks every other week or month just isn’t doable but popping onto KZread or TikTok, watching a tutorial and giving it a bash is far more realistic. Just my theories 🙂

Breast augmentation was the worst choice I could have made. I had this surgery about 22 years ago. They were always too big for my body. It was a trend back then and it was the era of the Playboy Bunny. My ex husband liked this look. I was a new mom and not comfortable with my body and chose to get this surgery, thinking it would improve my self image. It just made me feel self conscious. I just had them removed under local. It was a rough surgery, but I would do it over again 100 times! I feel so incredible and better at 50 than I ever did! My natural breasts are so cute and the perfect size for my body! My soon to be husband agrees! A lot of the surgeries I see today are just trends. I see so many butt augmentations that look completely unnatural. I can’t help but wonder if all these women will be happy with their choice as the trend is now moving towards a much smaller butt- and one that is natural. Getting a surgery reversed is an expense many won’t be able to afford. To have my breast implants removed under local was $3,000, which was on the lower end of prices in the country. Luckily I live in an area where things are not outrageously expensive. I am so happy my breast implants are out and have been having so much fun wearing button down shirts and shopping for new bras! I also look about 10 pounds thinner! And no more back and neck pain! I feel so light!
