It comes from the number given to his original 1984 toy in Japan. The D is for Destron, the Japanese name for the Decepticons. The 16 was just his number among the original batch of toys. It’s a deep cut detail but it’s been referenced here and there. Hope that helps!

If you read D-16 thinking the numbers are letters it can be read as DIG and this make sense because he was an energon miner

"Once!" - Prime

A lot of IDW elements in this Transformers movie like D-16, Optimus Prime's design especially the legs and also the cultures and vibes on Cybertron. So hype for this one!

I think them showing Orion and D-16 as real friends could really make their eventual rivalry all the more sadder. Im really interested to hear what Brian Tee Henry will do in the role and what he could bring to both a young D-16 and a ruthless Megatron in the future planned sequels. Hopefully they really do a good job fleshing him out and tackle more mature darker themes despite the tone of the trailer, similar to how Transformers: Animated (2007) had a more kid friendly art style but still tackled deep and mature topics like PTSD, military corruption and showed brutal deaths

What's the show's name? I know that's a transformer show but I'd like to watch it, and where can I find it?

He takes the name Megatron as a shorted version of his Idol Megatronus Prime. Who was one of the first 13 original primes. He was an evil servant of the dark lord Unicorn. Megatron sees him as a sort of misunderstood hero.

We also see what appears to be a quintisson enforcer (green guy with tentacles) so this is likely set during the rebellion against them.

I have one thing to say Megatron in transformers prime has the best design and vilain ever

Tbh the gladiator one is also fused with the miner one Basically the miners would hold fights for entertainment or be forced into it. Either way Megatron became the champion of these fights because he had a rare spark

Another origin for Megatron is that he was a working class energon miner and got fed up with his lack of rights and started the decepticons

16 is the model number of the the Destron unit that Megatron was in the original line of toys that became the Transformers in the west- so technically D16 was Megatrons original name and this is generally considered a tribute to that.

I had an idea D-16 should have megatronus have a revolutionary and gladiator personality Bumblebee should've been more kid like, a young teenage, not what we seen now Alita one, i think she ok not sure she be name ariel? Actually orion was a dock worker in G1 him being a clerk is modern lore which i think there trying to combine the two to make the story

Although I do want more to add to this story, I feel like they'd tackle 2 storylines instead of 1 per movie. One storyline would be the end of the quintesson's rule in cybertron. And the other storyline would be the divide between Orion and Megatron, where Megatron, after all of the hardships he's gone through under the quintessons, would end up wanting to not just end their rule but also end them as a whole, with Orion going against that idea leading to a fight between the 2. This fight would then end with neither Orion and Megatron winning but an interference by a quintesson leading to both having to take down the quintesson leading to a destruction of a certain place where Orion rises from the smoke to Bee and Elita 1 while Megatron leaves them thinking that Orion betrayed their bond.

To be fair he did name himself megatronus later on so he might do that in the film.

D-16 as a miner, then took Megatronus as a gladiator in honor to the prime, and shortened it to Megatron as politician, becoming the leader of the decepticons The transformers' origins are so interesting the whole franchise could rely on telling them here and there, different in every continuity, just to follow to the war with Quintessons, golden age and civil war, and they didn't even get to earth yet... After the classic known history there is still unicron, galvatron, etc It is a story so dense I find it amazing how most adaptations focused on the least incredible part, the robots in disguise on earth while fighting each other stuff

No the deceptions patch was a patch for the lower class of working bots, the miners, and salvager types. Megatron was a man of the people.

Because his name is D-16, and the trailer shows that he has that close friendship with Optimus, I would say they're inclined to follow a backstory like IDW or Aligned for Megatron here, where Megatron was an energon miner bot.

D-16 is more of an IDW thing, which the Aligned continuity (what was described in the short) took influence from and implemented certain elements to its story. In IDW comics, D-16 would become Megatron due to having no freedom to choose for himself and was given the task of a miner all his life due to his social class. He takes on the name Megatron after participating in gladiator fights and influences a lot of other Cybertronians affected by the system, including a beat cop by the name of Orion Pax.

The decepticon logo wasn’t originally meant for the decepticons, in some continuities megatron already has it because he is a descendent of megatronus who was one of the original primes, who was killed for going against the primes, that’s likely the dead body he is looking at and realizing he has similarities to, so when megatron becomes the one to create the decepticon factions, he changes his name to megatron to honor megatronus and also brands others with this logo which he is now using as the logo to represent both the decepticon cause and his honor for megatronus
