@liamcage7208 As I disagree with the behavior Hasbro and their executives, the only effect I can have is refusing to give Hasbro any of my money (as well as encouraging others to do the same). Are you aware of any other way to show disapproval? Money is the only thing that matters to corporations. I gave them my money in the past and look where we are now. Thankfully, I don't need to give them more money to be able to play the game, though I find I am more interested in tying out other ttRPG systems.

@@liamcage7208 sad to say but at this point, Hasbro is a sinking ship. Its best to let it sink and see where D&D and other IPs you love wind up, this year they have fired like 25-30% of their workforce. These people regardless of if we boycott or not, are likely going to lose their jobs because most of Hasbro just isn't profitable. I dont think we need to boycott, but rather vote with our wallets. Don't like what Hasbro and subsequently WOTC is making? then stop buying it. No point buying things you dont like for a company you dont want to support. Its probably better for these people to break off before Hasbro really sinks.

I kinda get that vibe, too. I think Hasbro is just being a bad company making bad decisions when it really should be the designers on the ground floor making the decisions for their respective IPs. Not the higher-ups who are just focused on the money with as little effort as possible, as quickly as possible, and nothing else. I never liked speedrunning in video games, but at least speedrunners put care and practice into what they're doing. This is trying to make money while being AS LAZY AS POSSIBLE. The only thing that matters is their next quarterly earnings call. The executives can now plan for taking their golden parachutes and spend all their time finding that next gig through their contacts on the Boards of Directors they sit on currently. It's a tale that has happened in corporations since time immemorial. My hope is Paizo scoops up some of the incredibly talented people to help them move forward with ORC based products. Also, watch for new names at WotC by March 24 as they will hire cheap people to replace some of those they cut.

The only time I've had to let someone go without warning was when a contractor refused to deliver a paper we put in a contract to deliver in our area already. He absolutely refused to deliver it even though he was being paid for the new customer and they were already in his area. So I told him that if he wouldn't I would find someone who would... I let him do the work until then and the moment I found someone I stopped his contract. I didn't feel good about it, but he didn't leave me a choice. That being said by what I know, it sounds like the order is more like you have to cut X amount of employees or X salary from your department. So that might be why it feels random, which is a terrible way to do it.

Yes, it's not the designers' fault and WotC isn't responsible for Hasblow's missteps (except for management; we need to remember that it was *WotC MANAGEMENT* that sent armed Pinkerton thugs to the home of a MtG collector and KZreadr), but we cannot allow this corporation to continue to MISmanage the game that started our entire hobby. Apparently Hasblow failed to get the message after the other "PR gaffes" (read: utter mismanagement of our hobby) earlier this year, and require another lesson in what happens when you disrespect your target audience. *Boycott ALL Hasbro products!*

I totally agree that this is a sign of things to come - WotC making money not by releasing D&D content, but by subscriptions fees and microtransaction in their One VTT. They need tech guys, not artists. But there’s something else here - Hasbro could have waited for after Christmas with this. Could have paid all those affected one extra month of wages. Could have given them a good times notice to soften the blow and find new employment. If they didn’t do that, it’s only for one reason and one reason only: they chose not to. My guess is this only partially about swapping skill sets. I think 80% of the motive was to send a message to WotC. Start making money. You’re all replaceable. No profits, no jobs. The clock is ticking. Make us money, now. I think WotC will be going down now, fast. Focusing on aggressive monetisation, trying to sell “pretty explosions” instead of actual D&D content and being totally out of touch as to what DM’s and players actually want, we might be witnessing the last days of D&D.

To explain what happened more succintly, they will not be replacing Amy Dallen, in fact they can't hire anyone for her position except Dallen. In the USA, the difference between a termination and a layoff, is that to be laid-off means that your position in the company will no longer exist but if they do need your position again they are legally obligated to contact you first before hiring anyone else. The reason for the difference is it lets struggling companies be able to let go of staff and rehire quickly when they are able, but most companies just do permanent layoffs and take the tax benefits in order to ease the burden of the unemployment insurance they would have to pay. This diffenece could imply that Hasbro will now be using AI to write their news blurbs. To be fair, I haven't read any of the articles about the incident, so idk if Nonat1s is misquoting the layoff term or has never been laid off in previous jobs.

Hasbro suffered a significant drop in the value of their stock this year for obvious reasons (Magic 30 and the OGL debacle being prime examples). Now, to try and artificially inflate their profit margins, they're gutting their staff and have already said they will make more cuts. Meanwhile, the CEO of Hasbro is getting an absurd bonus for doing... nothing? The choices that have damaged Hasbro's perceived value were choices made by Hasbro higher-ups, but they aren't the ones getting fired. I do hope it's not that they will just privot more to AI as you think, but I can imagine that some of these art director responsibilities will be piled onto the remaining art directors. Surely, if you're capable of managing the art for the card designs, you can take care of the product design too!! Easy peasy! It's awful, and really ridiculous. I don't follow, unearthed arcana has consistently been middling at best. They tried to make Rangers good THREE TIMES and gave up instead of just applying the tweaks GMs and players already had been telling them to use for YEARS. The Mystic class was straight up banned from play across the board, it was such a mess of overpowered options. They straight up stopped publishing unearthed arcana for an entire year right after promising a specific release schedule. WotC has been bleeding talent left right center for years, and it shows.

D&D sales are way down. The D&D movie box office residuals are artificially bolstering those numbers. Hasbro's only profitable IP is Magic the Gathering. No one buys Hasbro games anymore. At one time every household had a copy of monopoly but you buy one and that's it for life. The Hasbro model of manufacturing and selling games is a thing of the past and they will inevitably go out of business. Those IPs will get sold off, WoTc will be sold and soon they only way you will be able to play Sorry, or Trivial Pursuit will be on your smart phone.

I have watched many of these videos and its pretty clear who has been through one of these layoffs, and who has not. Hasbro is not the only company to have layoffs because they have taken losses, and not the only one to do it this year. Additionally, most layoffs come with a number of options as part of it. They announce it internally ahead of time so the persons can look for a new position within the company, or in some cases (including Hasbro's) they take an early retirement process. Likely these people were advised of the layoff, and also told not to mention the layoff in advance else lose out on all options or packages. Honestly, I think that this is getting bigger reactions because some of these people have become some level of celebrity to the fans of the games.

My company laid off a bunch of people in various departments before Thanksgiving (me included) no one, not even the Sr managers knew anything was going to happen, and about halfway through the day the directors walked around and told random people to go to a meeting in the big conference room, once we got there HR was waiting with our folders and they had security walk us directly out of the building, then mailed everything from our desks to us a week later......
