And played him hilariously well, seeming to half-kill Hugh Laurie in the process. Honestly, all you U.S. "House" fans, you really should see it.

I like to think Napoleon only had affairs with Josephine and similar names so he didnt technically say the wrong name during bed

'only' hahahaha... he divorced Joséphine and married Marie Louise of Austria to bear him an heir, and had confirmed illegitmate children with Maria Walewska and Eléonore Denuelle de La Plaigne

Wellington gave up being ambassador in Paris so he could be the British ambassador to the Vienna conference. Some military men have clothing named after them, some are named after their clothing. Admiral Vernon always wore a Grogram coat, so the sailors called him "Old Grog" when the Admiral ordered the Rum ration to be watered down, the resultant beverage was named "Grog" in his honour.

The main dispute between Wellington and Napoleon was whether the hat brim should be worn parallel to the eyes or perpendicular. Other than that it was the same hat.

This story probably isn't true as mid-level nobles were the subject of a lot of celebrity gossip and army officers at the time were regarded as hot. With Wellington in particular he was estranged from his wife and had several long-term secret mistresses but there were rumors that he slept with just about every woman who ever shared a carriage with him. It's not surprising that the propagandists who exaggerated how short and cocky Napoleon was would also claim that Wellington stole his girls.

But then so many people have affairs with the nanny, tutor, nurse, secretary, instructors, pool boy, bodyguard, etc. 🙄

@georgenaughton6700 that's a cliche from fiction. Before no-fault divorces it was common for permanently estranged couples to both have "affairs" that everyone knew about. Poor people could move to a new town where they were not recognized and remarry

On the other hand, Wellington does seem to have had a bit of a thing about comparing himself to Napoleon - analysing his military tactics to see if he could beat them. So it would have been weirdly in character for him to compare himself with Napoleon in every possible way. Plus, those two ladies were doubtless among the hottest courtesans in Paris. They’d have been in any important man’s sights as prospects.

Wasn't Désirée Clary his actual ex, having been engaged to him before Josephine came along? So the correct answer is Jean-Baptiste Bernadotte, subsequent king of Sweden?

Napoleon didn't speak English and wouldn't have even if he could so that "Able was I..." quote can't be attributable to the "Little Emporer". The French equivalent wouldn't be a translate the same anyway. 😅
