Ever since the Christian movement began, followers of Jesus Christ have said he was God ... in human form.
But what about Jesus himself? Who did he think he was?
With the rise of textual criticism and the modern study of history, historians have developed tools to unlock this question. Today Jesus of Nazareth is no longer just a figure in a stained glass window, but a real person of history, whose life can be investigated historically.
So let’s examine the New Testament, not as inspired Scripture, but as an ordinary collection of ancient documents. Let’s apply to them the standard tests we would use with regard to any other ancient sources.
When historians investigate the Jesus of history, what do they find?

@@thiagomarconi2841 Read the Book of John. He isn't egotistical at all. Pay attention to his words carefully Jesus’ Claims About Himself 48 The Jews answered him, “Aren’t we right in saying that you are a Samaritan and demon-possessed?” 49 “I am not possessed by a demon,” said Jesus, “but I honor my Father and you dishonor me. 50 I am not seeking glory for myself; but there is one who seeks it, and he is the judge. 51 Very truly I tell you, whoever obeys my word will never see death.” 52 At this they exclaimed, “Now we know that you are demon-possessed! Abraham died and so did the prophets, yet you say that whoever obeys your word will never taste death. 53 Are you greater than our father Abraham? He died, and so did the prophets. Who do you think you are?” 54 Jesus replied, “If I glorify myself, my glory means nothing. My Father, whom you claim as your God, is the one who glorifies me. 55 Though you do not know him, I know him. If I said I did not, I would be a liar like you, but I do know him and obey his word. 56 Your father Abraham rejoiced at the thought of seeing my day; he saw it and was glad.” 57 “You are not yet fifty years old,” they said to him, “and you have seen Abraham!” 58 “Very truly I tell you,” Jesus answered, “before Abraham was born, I am!” 59 At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds

Muslims still believe in Jesus as a messenger and blessed prophet of God nonetheless even though we deny his supposed divinity, it’s the Jew who completely reject him and label him as a false prophet under the pretext that he didn’t fulfill any of the messianic prophecies in the Old Testament. You gotta give it to us though no? Lol I mean we’re literally the only faith in the entire world (outside of yours of course) which revers Christ. It really saddens me sometimes how you have so many Christians dissing out Islam and insulting it without really getting to know what it’s actually about and how it presents its own arguments and views.

@@Rotisiv My friend, Christianity is the only faith that is not based on work but grace through faith alone. If Islam teaches that by good deeds you will go to heaven then Muhammad himself will not be on heaven. Think about this If every Christian acted like Christ then the world would be a better place but if every Muslim acted like muhammad then the world would be full of wars, slavery, women's oppression, and pride. You believe that by praying five times a day, by fasting, by giving alms or by going trip to Mecca you will enter the paradise. No, completely we have a different world. You believe that you will pay your debt of your sins, I believe It is by grace through faith alone in Christ who lived a perfect sinless life, beaten, and hang up on the cross so you and I can justly forgiven. I'm not saying I'm better than you are or more good than you are, In fact I think I am worse than you are. But that is what Christianity is all about, its about being born-again, by not thinking higher than yourself but by condescending yourself and by trusting in the Savior and not by yourself. Christianity is not a religion, it is a relationship.

“He was despised and rejected- a man of sorrows, acquainted with deepest grief. We turned our backs on him and looked the other way. He was despised, and we did not care. Yet it was our weaknesses he carried; it was our sorrows that weighed him down. And we thought his troubles were a punishment from God, a punishment for his own sins! But he was pierced for our rebellion, crushed for our sins. He was beaten so we could be whole. He was whipped so we could be healed. All of us, like sheep, have strayed away. We have left God’s paths to follow our own. Yet the Lord laid on him the sins of us all. He was oppressed and treated harshly, yet he never said a word. He was led like a lamb to the slaughter. And as a sheep is silent before the shearers, he did not open his mouth. Unjustly condemned, he was led away. No one cared that he died without descendants, that his life was cut short in midstream. But he was struck down for the rebellion of my people. He had done no wrong and had never deceived anyone. But he was buried like a criminal; he was put in a rich man’s grave. But it was the Lord’s good plan to crush him and cause him grief. Yet when his life is made an offering for sin, he will have many descendants. He will enjoy a long life, and the Lord’s good plan will prosper in his hands. When he sees all that is accomplished by his anguish, he will be satisfied. And because of his experience, my righteous servant will make it possible for many to be counted righteous, for he will bear all their sins. I will give him the honors of a victorious soldier, because he exposed himself to death. He was counted among the rebels. He bore the sins of many and interceded for rebels.” ‭‭Isaiah‬ ‭53:3-12‬ ‭NLT‬‬ "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." " I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept his claim to be God. That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut him up for a fool, you can spit at him and kill him as a demon or you can fall at his feet and call him Lord and God, but let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about his being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to." - C.S.Lewis , Mere Christianity.

In the 13th chapter of Mathew, several parables are retold which Jesus told us, as well as his response to the question of why he is speaking in parables at all. The end of this chapter also gives insight to how the people in his homeland viewed him and their great unbelief in him being the Messiah. Although the parable of the vineyard is not mentioned here, you might still want to read through it, since it contains important statements about the kingdom of god. By the way, in Mathew 16, 13-20, Mark 8, 27-30 and Luke 9, 18-22 he then asks his disciples what they believe him to be. Finally, Jesus then tells the parable of the vineyard in Mathew 21, 33-46, as well as in Mark 12, 1-12 and Luke 20, 9-19. As you can see, the vineyard parable is mentioned in all the sinoptic gospels. The statement Jesus makes while being interrogated is mentioned in the senoptic gospels as well. Mathew 26, 57-68, where he says the line in verse 64. Mark 14, 53-65, where he says the line in verse 62. Luke 22, 54-55; 63-71, where he says the line in verse 70. John is a bit different, but the interrogation is also mentioned there, you should read chapter 18 for that. In this whole gospel Jesus' thoughts on his status as the son of god and/or the son of man are depicted a bit differently.

Where was Jesus standing when he claimed to be I AM? In the temple. We were specifically warned not to believe it if any man claimed to be God Almighty who stood in the temple, an abomination. This event never happened and Jesus never claimed to be God Almighty. He clearly stated he spoke the words the Father told him to say NOT of himself. Sometimes he spoke directly as if God were speaking (1st person) and other times he told us He was speaking for the Father (3rd person). This happened thruout the OT by the prophets and especially in the Psalms. You have to be able to discern by context who are the words coming from. Anyone born again is anointed by the Spirit to speak as God's anointed Son of Man. We've been given the exact same authority as Jesus possessed because we are begotten of the same incorruptible seed, as noted in James and I Peter. We can forgive sins, heal the blind deaf and lame, cast out demons, etc. it doesn't make us God just like Jesus never claimed to be. He is our brother, one of many firstborn of the Fathers spirit. ((of the 1st resurrection) Not our creator God. Everyone born of the spirit has dual natures. A human nature and our New God nature. We all have the same internal battle to crush satans head. Our old nature. Jesus was no different. Don't believe everything you're told (nor read) and rightly divide truth from scribal lies inserted into scripture to deceive us. As even Jeremiah, John and others warned. Jer 8.8. thats why we were told to establish the logos of truth by 2 or 3 witnesses line upon line precept upon precept. The Truth will set us free from a strong delusion created by blind guides and lies that started soon after (and before) 70 ad. Study to show YOURSELF approved by God. Not depending on scholars to tell you what the bible says. "I even i am YHWH besides ME there is NO SAVIOR". Isaiah 43:11. There is NO OTHER. Isaiah 45:5-7. "Put not your trust in Princes nor a SON OF MAN in whom there is NO SALVATION". Psalm 146:3. " MY PEOPLE perish for lack of knowledge". The Father is the Way, truth and life. No one gets to the Father except thru being born of the Father. Jesus spoke the words of Truth for the Father.

The first five minutes of this video is excellent. It clearly shows that Jesus claimed to be the Messiah; the Son of God and the 'Son of Man' figure from Daniel. However, these are messianic motifs . TheJews did not believe that YHWH was coming as their messiah, but the messiah would be his agent, his plenipoptentiary. The Son of Man figure is one who gains access to the Ancient of Days and id given authority by the Ancient of Days. He is clearly not God, but again his agent, his plenipotentiary. Thus all the video has done is demonstrate the original confession of faith : Jesus is the Messiah (Christ), the Son of God. Of course, if he is the Messiah, the Son of God, and all authority has been given to him to act as God's plenipotentiary, then we would expect him to act with divine authority; expel demons and work miracles etc. However, other OT and NT characters expelled demons and worked miracles etc. This does not make them God, but is a sure indication that they were working with God's authority , power and blessing.

@@supplantermusic9413 : Thanks for taking the time to reply. You raise a number of issues and so here is my brief reply: 1. The word 'God' has a wider range of meanings in the Bible than it does for us today. The fact that , Moses, Hebrew Kings, Judges etc are called 'God' is proof of such. Thus, if such can be called 'God', how much more so can we expect the promised messiah, the Son of God to be so designated. 2. As for 'worship', the Greek word (proskuneo) also has a wide range of meaning and many individuals were guven this in the Bible. It can mean worship of a deity, but it can also mean reverence; obeisance; or simply bowing down out of respect before a superior as was the custom in Bible times. Therefore, using the trem 'worship' with reference to Jesus already assumes that Jesus is God. Interestingly, a number of translations do not use the word 'worship' in some of these texts when applied to Jesus, but use an alternative instead. Furthermore, the old English word 'worship' as used in the time of the King James Bible had a much broader use. Judges were called 'Your Worship' . In the old marriage ceremony, it said : "With this ring I theee wed, with this body I thee worship". 3. As for the individual sayings you mention, these need to be taken in context. Jesus was the Son of God. He is called the image of God and so perfectly reflected his Father's qualities. I can explain each of these in turn if you would like.

John 8:58: “Before Abraham was, I am!” I’m surprised this wasn’t mentioned in the video. Sure he was the Son of God and Son of Man, but that can kind of still confuse people if you don’t really deepen your understanding of scripture. Here though, if you just have a rudimentary understanding of scripture, specifically just needing to know exodus, then this singular line that Jesus speaks, does in fact declares himself as God. THE one and only god.

Different words, for different purpose I am in ancient Greek, does not mean, I will be that which I will be ... That being said, the words now translated(I AM), in the Greek language of the time of writing, fits the narrative perfectly - Jesus was claiming to have existed, at the time Abraham was alive, thus taking precedent in-terms of authority as heir to the throne - who is greater, their forefather Abraham, or the Messiah who came down from heaven? They understood, and Jesus' response was clear as day - no conspiracy theories necessary.

In order to understand what happened to those b4 Christ, you MUST, MUST start from the understanding that they where guilty and deserved to be punished. They willingly chose sin. This means, God is JUST for sending EVERYONE to hell/prison. Each had the chance b4 Christ to go to heaven, but they chose to break Gods laws. The most horrific verse in bible says, GOD IS GOOD. That is horrific bc we are not. God is a GOOD JUDGE. What does that mean for you who are a criminal? Question: if a man murdered your loved ones, and that man stood b4 a judge who just let him go free, would you call that judge a good judge? NO! You would demand justice, demand he satisfy the demand of the law and say he is a bad/crooked judge if not. God is a GOOD JUDGE, He CAN NOT simply let you or anyone go free. He must satisfy the demands of His law or else He becomes unjust. His law demand the wages of sin is death, eternal death. So God is still Just/Good for sending every guilty criminal to hell b4 Christ was even born. But He is more than a Just God, He is also Love. And to demonstrate His love He commanded His love towards us by sending His Son to the cross. Why? Because the demands of His law must be paid, He can not let you go free no matter how much He loves you. So how does the death of Christ do that? Imagine you are guilty of theft, you stand b4 a judge and he says the punishment for your crime is you pay the court 1 million dollars or go to prison for 5 yrs. You dont have any money. Just as you are about to go to pris9n, a man stands up and says your honor, i will pay his fine, i have the money. The judge can now legally allow you to go free because the man paid the money on your behalf and SATISFIED THE DEMAND OF THE LAW. The demand of Gods law is, the wages of sin is death. Christ died in your place, for your sins, so that God, the good judge, could allow you to go free because THE DEMAND OF THE LAW WAS MET. Your fine was paid. But bc Christ had no sin, death, prison had no legal authority to hold Him, so He rose from the dead. Just as a innocent man in prison is freed once it is known. It is a pardon offered by the judge. All you need do is repent and believe the gospel of Christ. So God, is JUST when he punished the guilty b4 Christ because they willingly committed crimes against God. CON =WITH SCIENCE =KNOWLEDGE When man sinned , he did so WITH KNOWLEDGE it was wrong. None of us has ever been innocent, we all deserved hell. So God is a good, just judge for giving them what they deserve. And God is just in giving those who reject His pardon the same punishment. God IS NOT UNJUST for saving those who receive His pardon because He Himself paid the wages, or satisfied the demands of the law.. So God is just in sending the guilty to hell, and just in saving some to demonstrate his love toward us all. If God did not punish those who sinned b4 Christ, He would have been UNJUST. IF God had not pardoned some, He would have been UNLOVING. God is Good, we are not, He is a just and loving God

The reading of "you will never die" is based on some Hebrew scribal tradition, but the Masoretic Text (the best attested manuscript family of the OT) says "we will never die." Moreover, the language of dying gods in Jewish texts was meant to contrast the defeat of pagan gods with the indefeasibility of Yahweh, so even the "you" reading would at most indicate that God would not be defeated and, therefore, abandoned by the people, like these other pagan gods. This would have nothing to do with God's ability to become incarnate and possibly killed in the human sense. - RF Admin

Can someone in a sincere heart respond to this point I’d like to discuss. If, according to this video, by textual analysis, Jesus is the Messiah, the Unique Son of God, and the Son of Man figure within the vision of Daniel, how does that make Him the very God that the fathers of the Jewish people worshipped? In all these offices that belong to Christ I rather see a distinction with regard to personhood in relationship to God. For as the Son of God, it is evident who His Father is, namely God. As the Messiah, scripture speaks as a unique one anointed by God, and thus is distinct from God in personhood. As the Son of Man, He is given authority by the Ancient of Days, which is a title for the God of Israel, and is thus distinct from Him. But to answer the final question of this video concerning the correct answer to the question, “who do you say I am?”, the answer was, depending on the account, “the Christ” or “the Christ of God” or “the Christ, the Son of the Living God”. How do these claims in and of themselves point to Jesus being the God of Israel, if anything as mentioned before, they evidently distinguish him from the God of Israel who is His Father. Now what I’m not saying is that “the whole of scripture doesn’t indicate to us that the man Jesus, prior to the incarnation was True God of True God”, for I myself believe in the creed of Nicaea and Chalcedon. Rather what I am saying is that we as followers of Christ need to avoid eisegetical interpretations concerning the claims of Christ, so we can get a truer and fuller understanding of what scripture really emphasizes by Jesus’ repeated claims. So, again, was what Jesus said in the points mentioned really identifying him as the God of Israel, which the Jewish people worshipped? If so, how?

There's a bunch going on with this issue. First, logical deductions take time. Jesus can make explicit radical claims about Himself. But understanding all that those claims entail can be the result of mental effort. Daniel 7 does make Jesus one who will be given an eternal rule over all creation. According to the New Testament, Jesus returned from death and taught the apostles more. Paul claims Jesus did this for him as well in Arabia of all places. While Jesus made radical claims about Himself before the crucifixion, it isn't a clear explanation of Chalcedon or anything like that. But since these disciples are the source of information for what Jesus said prior to the crucifixion, then they are a source for what He said after as well. Furthermore, the New Testament insists the disciples recognized Jesus' fulfillment of prophecy after all was said and done. For them, the Old Testament became an authority on interpreting the events of Jesus' life. The entire idea of Jesus' death for our sins seems to be something they never even dreamed of until He was risen. And it's clear from their writings that they saw direct connections between Jesus and the sacrificial lamb of the temple. Thus the entire idea of Jesus' status as the sinless sacrifice for our sins is a post Easter revelation. Once this becomes attributed to Jesus, one has to ask serious theological questions. Can an angel or some other being really be the sinless sacrifice for sins? Well Jesus clearly claimed before the crucifixion that He had some status higher than the angels. Philippians clearly claims Jesus existed before His birth and descended to become one of us. The result of this is different Christian groups making arguments for either raising or lowering the status of Jesus. While Jesus said He was lower than the Father, He's also this sinless sacrifice and beyond the angels. John 1 makes him the creator of all things that began to exist. So Jesus didn't begin to exist? What you run into is a problem where all the explanations seem to not fit the known data points. Thus through much debate, Christians eliminate views of the Incarnation that don't fit the data. It's not a process of "this is the correct view." It's more of a process of ruling out incorrect views. Slowly but surely, they spiral in on what we have today over the centuries. In fact, the details are still being debated. God is obviously going to be difficult to understand. Part of the debate today is whether Jesus really had access to His omniscience as a human. He isn't really a human and "tempted in every way" as Hebrews says if He knows everything. The view I prefer is that Jesus was only omniscient in His subconscious mind. So if you were to ask Jesus, what do you think of Einstein's theory of relativity, would He know? I think the answer is no. Rather than diminish our view of Jesus, I think this raises it. For, He is struggling with the questions of life just as we are, truly descending to our level, and yet remaining sinless.

Every objection you could give I would be able to counter by simply saying that how I interact with my creation is my choice, so if I don’t want you to find the truth of my divinity, then I’m simply hiding it from you. So it was with Jesus, if he ever claimed it at all.

    1. If you apply that standard to other works of ancient history, guess what will happen, ancient history no longer exists because almost all sources used by historians are contradictory and full of miracles. 2.Also, the contradictions in the Gospels are about details and not about the main claims, when the contradictory reports agree about the central claim but not about the details, it gives greater certainty to that claim because it means that there was no collusion; this criterion is also used in courts for witnesses who will almost never have the same stories, but will have stories that agree on the central claims and are contradictory on the details. 3. So these are double standards, whether on purpose or out of ignorance, it doesn't matter.
