Who Did It Better? - Barry Ryan vs The Damned - Eloise Comparison

In this video we're comparing Barry Ryan and The Damned, and their renditions of 'Eloise'. We know nothing about Barry Ryan, so we're anxious to hear his work. And we are genuinely curious about how The Damned are going to work a song from 1968, in a different style than what they would normally do. This will be fun. Please tell us who you think did it better. Enjoy!

Barry Ryan's version is one of many great British pop gems from the Swinging London period. His version was a hit in my country, Australia, when I was 15 and I adored it! And I appreciate The Damned for delivering a version that gives respect to the original. Certainly a tasteful version. My heart goes to the Barry Ryan version.

Just scrolling down and reading all the comments and quite amazed at it all. Obviously I created my channel in memory of Barry and Paul and yes, it is clear from the name I will always choose Barry's version. I think the one thing we need to remember, firstly it was Paul Ryan who wrote this for Barry so points for this alone, it was 1968 and now people cannot understand the film clip and forget that this was , I believe, either the first or one of the very first of all film clips made for a single. Paul and Barry were not yet 20 years old when Paul wrote it and Barry first sang it. I actually made a video for the song from other film clips as I felt we did not see enough of Barry in this film clip but let's give it credit where credit is due. It is really good clip for that time and has a haunting feel like the song has. Barry was an incredibly charismatic man and perhaps that does not translate from that video these days. He was such a gifted singer. His live performances really showed his incredible talent, no singing down , he would sing it perfectly and charm and wow the audience. There is a demo version of the first ever soft vocal take of this song and I have published this on my channel where Barry sang it in a soft voice which did not really work and Paul and Barry knew it as soon as they listened. Barry did the screams at the end to basically show the torment about losing 'Eloise' and he basically went with a bottle of Jack Daniels or something and screamed his heart out. It was meant to be this way and if you listen to his songs like "Love is Love" you can hear his trademark rock screams which when you consider were done in 1968 and 1969 , Barry set a new style for singers. I am working on a website about Barry Ryan and Paul Ryan as there is sadly so much misinformation online, so many untruths written and also even some videos about Barry's career are filled with inaccuracies. I knew Barry (and Paul to a lesser degree) my father worked in a high end position in the music industry. Barry was was able to belt out notes, yet had a pure voice, great tenor sound, but could also make his vocals sound husky or somehow different yet once you got to know this singer he was instantly recognizable by his diction, his intonation and tone of his voice and also the way he presented a song. Barry shaped my love for music and in a way had such a huge influence in my life. He was an incredibly giftet artist, with montages and paintings ( Paul also was a wonderful painter). Paul wrote songs for so many, like Frank Sinatra with the song "I Will Drink the Wine". Barry took the name of their stepfather Davison in the 80s and already in the early 70s became interested in photography when a German photographer gave him a camera as a gift after she was taking photos of Barry for his album. Barry became a professional photographer in the 80s and did fashion shoots but for me his black and white images which looked surrealistic are my favourites. His exhibition ( in memory of his beloved twin brother Paul who passed away in 1992) was called 'Day Mares' and was so fascinating. He used lighting to create a special effect almost like his subjects were moving or otherworldly. He took incredible portrait photos of Regan, Margaret Thatcher, actors like Anthony Hopkins, musicians, like Sting, Paul McCartney and so on. Barry remained loved by fans especially on the continent, like Germany as he sang his hits in German, French and also I believe Italian. I am always so thrilled when I get mails of comments from his fans, who were teenagers or even younger when they first heard Barry's "Eloise". He passed away on the 28th of September 2021 RIP. He will live on as does Paul in their music and the hearts of their families and loved ones. Warmest regards from Tasmania, Tia

This is a live vocal performance of Barry aged 20 ( he just turned 20 ) and this may be a better way to see this. Eloise is a difficult song to sing but young Barry did it perfectly. BTW Paul wrote ~Eloise~ and it was only the second or third song he ever had written. Warmest regards from sunny Tasmania, Tia 🦘 kzread.info/dash/bejne/eKOIzLCqoae1oM4.htmlsi=IF5HSMrSZ2z1pYzh🤩

Well said, of course I am biased but I fully agree with you. I guess for those who do not know about Barry's vocals but base it on his first ever solo hit and on a video that was the first film clip made for a single (but did not age well, however should be considered a classic and a sign of that time , 1968 and be somehow honoured for being the first film clip for a single) it is hard to understand just what a great singer Barry was and how much material he released ( some of the songs in 3 languages up to 2019 or so I believe) and they have not heard his vocal range, his versatility or heard about his live performances. To some people "Eloise" is a "one hit wonder" and some do not even like this. Barry would have laughed off negative comments but I guess what irritates me if there is criticism sorely based on one song or one listening and Barry offered so much more than ( what is doubtlessly though a hit classic of that era) just one hit single. I would also tell people who criticise his vocal delivery on ~Eloise~ , go on then, sing it, sing it loudly and record yourself, see what a difficult song this is, if you have good ears, you will hear what I mean. The Damned performed it completely differently and singing it in a way that was completely different and made it also easier to sing. I am not putting The Damned down or saying that the singer is not good, I know Barry liked their version ( because it was done differently but also respected the original) but it is easier to sing that version than Barry's. Anyway, thank you to this channel and the Hanier family for choosing this and starting this debate and remembering Barry and Paul. It should be also noted that sadly that when ~Eloise~ was meant to be released in America, foolishly whoever had the last say in America, decided that it could not be released in its entirety and mutilated this song in a 2 minute boring song thereby stopping any success of this song in the United States. Luckily the decision was made Down Under to keep it in its entirety and it became a huge hit and people still love it so much, same with New Zealand etc, I think from memory the United States was the only country where it was cut like this. To me it will always be the epic song, I was just a young teenager when my father bought a demo or sample pressing home of this and was blown away but it and started my life long love for music.

I ♥ Barry Ryan's version when I was a little kid. The song got constant play on AM radio in Melbourne (even in the early 70's), and the accompanying film-clip (which you've watched) would get occassional play on TV. I remember being intrigued by the film-clip and its dated 60's aesthetics. Even though the video was only seven years old by the time I was seeing it on TV, it felt like I was looking into a distant past... I didn't think much of The Damned's version if I was to be honest.

@@OnceWasRStrathfield That was pure Barry. 🤣 He actually was so handsome in real life with those sparkling big brown eyes and that smile. his charisma was off the charts. Believe me when I tell you that there were few females of a certain age who could or wish to resist him. I loved his wit, his humour, kindness and sense of fun. He actually was able to laugh at himself and make fun of himself which is something rare in such a good looking man. Best of all, he was a good man, a kind soul who famously never had a bad falling out with anyone, he abhorred violence, unkindness and did not like snobs. He could pull the funniest expression and a second later look at you dead seriously and you sort of thought, to yourself, did I just see this? Of course in time I realized that he did this to crack me up and I used to try and pay him back by playing tricks on him. Barry was so very talented not just with music but his art and later his incredible photographs. I will always be grateful to him as he got me interested in being behind the camera instead of being in front. Gave me the confidence to apply for a job at a local TV station as the youngest and at that time only female working in the photographic department and getting to learn to become a photographic technician as they called it then and learning more about taking photographs. The video in Barry Ryan's version should have concentrated more on Barry as another commenter mentioned, but I do believe it was in the early stages of film and video productions for pop videos as such. I suggested the comparison of Alone Again Or by Love and The Damned in the comments of their very first comparison video. The song is such a classic it really should be heard. In the case of Love, it is imo one of the greatest opening tracks to one of the greatest ever albums.

Love the damned but this imho is a low point. Very 80s production, love the 80s haircuts. Barry Ryan's is over produced in a sixties way but so is the damned. Overall not keen on either. But keep up the good work thank you.

Maybe you shouldn't have to listen to the Barry Ryan version (written by his brother Paul) with this ugly and dumb video. This song is for me like a musical teddy bear. I was fascinated by it as a child and it's still among my faves. Note that the main influence on the song is Jimmy Webb's "MacArthur Park" sung by Richard Harris, a huge hit in early 68. Other influences are the Beach Boys' "Good Vibrations" for the bridge and "Hey Jude" for the coda. True that the lyrics are quite dark, the narrator begging her for love. It's based on a girl met in the then Swinging London. Considered as a one-hit artist, Barry Ryan and his brother released many grat songs and some good albums after this hit. Unfortunately totally underrated. PS. Sorry but I never liked the Damned version.

It’s actually a brilliant song and Tom Jones or The 4 Tops would’ve smashed it outta the park Barry wasn’t up to the job and The Damned should’ve been Damned for doing it at all ..😡 There are some great songs on Phantasmagoria but I don’t care who was on the record , that wasn’t the Damned , that was Dave Vanian in his west end theatre wet dream period and that whole period just made me wanna gag and underline just how much punk was dead and I should move on with my life and I don’t doubt that’s coloured my judgement of their bland and pasty version . So , the song is the actual winner , Barry n Dave n his mates both botched a great opportunity. 🎤drop 👍🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
