I think Ned created the Ashara dayne rumor in case jon got any targaryen features like the silver hair/purple eyes. House dayne is known to have similar features. By saying his mother is a dayne it would have kept robert away, because if robert knew jon was a targaryen he would have killed him.

Cat doesn't care that Ned has a bastard. She acknowledges that men, especially during war times, have needs and that most lords have bastards. What pisses her off about Jon is that Ned brought him to live with their family. While most lords would quietly take care of their bastards from a distance, Ned brought his into their house to be raised with her kids and thus flaunting his infidelity. Thats what really hurts Cats pride. Something tells me Brandon was the kind of guy that wouldn't pay any of his bastards a second thought and Cat would go on living a blissfully ignorant life.

Yeah, Wylla's a different person than the fisherman's daughter, who lives on the opposite side of the continent. Those are two separate rumors.

Ned was always faithful, but I do love the idea that Ned and Ashara were genuinely in love and good and kind to each other. That way Jon could be the product of a loving and pure union

While that sounds like a tragic tale that George would go with, I have a theory that Ashara Dayne and Brandon Stark (Ned's brother, not the son) were secretly in love and planned to wed each other. But before Brandon could call off the wedding to Catelyn, he heard of Lyanna's "kidnapping" and went to King's Landing (no need to explain the rest there).

A much less common theory is that Aegon is a Dayne, the son of Ashara. The Dayne's famously have the silver hair and purple eyes like the Targaeryans and Aegon is roughly 17-19 at the end of Dance. Putting him just older than Jon who is 17 (plus of minus a couple months) at the end of Dance. The timeline works out, but if Aegon is closer to 19 than 17, it would point to him being legitimate

But Ashara supposedly had a stillborn girl...I think it's more likely that (F)Aegon is a Blackfyre from the female line. Although Septa Lemore could still be Ashara.

A woman who fits the description of Ashara roamed Winterfell for months before Cat was brought to the North then the rumors stopped but she hear about it in passing. 4. Yes I know what the 4th point is refering to, after Roberts Rebellion rumors were spreading about Ned and Ashara around Winterfell. That they had a thing, that Jon was her son. Catelyn eventually asked him about it, and it was the first time she was afraid of him. We don't have an exact transcript of that conversation, but the implication was that Jon was her son. Technically she was asking about Jon. Now that doesn't entirely discredit the theory, but it's really not a very strong piece of evidence.

Ashara is mentioned by name in Clash of kings, Storm of Swords and Dance of Dragons. Mentioned by name or rumored in four books for a character never truly introduced to be alive nor be truly driving the story forward especially without a POV character seems suspicious if she isn’t important. Other than Aryes the mad king, Rhaegar and Lyanna who are important to the story-why is Ashara mentioned so often?

The moment Ashara Dayne was offered as a possible candidate in the books, I instantly knew that she was not Jon Snow's mother. Reason being is that if there is supposed to be a mystery, you don't just have the book literally having one of the characters share their inner thoughts on one specific person being the answer, unless if it's a misdirection.

It’s very interesting. Especially the eye colour description, not often is eye colour described but Ashara and Septa Lemour are both described as having the same eyes. When Cat is bitching about Jon at the beginning Ned yells at her to “never mention Ashara” It’s further peculated that Ned actually married Ashara by the old gods and that when he returned cross country to the north and called the banners that he was further held up at the river lands by cats dad who made him do something he didn’t want to in front of the gods. That would have been disavow his marriage at take Cat who was promised to his brother. That’s why cars uncle was so pissed he left then and didn’t talk with his brother.

I've always wondered if Bran or Bloodraven literally explained to Arthur Dayne that he had to fall then and there, in order for Westeros to survive the walkers. His cryptic comment to Ned speaks volumes. Dayne would have been 100% confident he could defeat Ned and crew; instead he knows Ned will survive the encounter.

Selmy who was in love with Ashara seems to think Ned is a pretty ok guy which would be weird if Ned slept with her and then dumped her while pregnant leading to her suicide. My money is on Brandon being the Stark that dishonored her, not Ned. I wonder if Septa Lemore is Ashara, but how does she hide the purple eyes? That’s a pretty noticeable feature and Tyrion would have picked up on that fairly quickly. Unless she uses some kind of magic or glamour to hide her eye color. Septa Lemore is most likely someone though, Tyrion was trying to figure out who she might be.

It is possible that Brandon planned to call off his wedding to Catelyn in favor of marrying Ashara, who could have captured his heart, especially if she was pregnant with his child. The problem that could have stood in the way of that happening was Lyanna's "kidnapping", which he would take a detour to King's Landing that forever changed those plans.

I never understood why Ned didn't tell Catelyn the truth about Jon. It's not like she wouldn't understand him and keep it the secret. After all, by being Ned's wife, Jon was her nephew as well.

I'll put forward the theory GRRM had no idea who Jon's mother was when he started writing.

Honestly would not be surprised if Ned was just casually talking about Ashara to Jon’s wetnurse or something one day, purposefully trying to get the word around without outright saying it (because it was obviously a lie) so that if Jon ended up looking like a Targaryen, people wouldn’t automatically assume Targaryen, just Ashara. Do not put it past that man one bit. Honestly makes more sense than Brandon sleeping with her and people confusing it with Ned.

I agree she would be proud to be the surrogate mother of the true Prince of Westeros. Catelyn might have gossiped or Ned thought it would put her and the kids in danger of execution from Robert if he ever found out about Jon. Catelyns hatred and contempt would have protected her.

Jon’s Mother is confirmed to be Lyanna Stark. It’s why Dan and David got permission to make GoT one question GRRM asked was “Do you know who Jon’s mother is”. It was Lyanna. George RR Martin speaks about it on his personal blog.

I believe that Lyanna Stark is Jon Snow's mother. I don't believe that Septa Lemore is Ashara. I like to believe that Ashara and Howland Reed fell in love and are living in the neck and she is Meera and Jojen's mother. It's probably not true, but I enjoy the idea. A lot.

The thing is that Ashara Dayne is the lady in waiting and friend of Elia Martell , mother of Argon and Rhaenys. She is not the lady lady in waiting to Rhaella Targaryen, the mother of Rhaegar ,Viserys and Daenerys.😅

Wylla was a wet Nurse In service to House Dayne. Ned Dane even says he and Jon Snow are “milk brothers” and she is not a fisherman’s daughter. The fisherman’s daughter was a whole other woman. These are just theories that ppl have of who Jon Snows mom Is. The Daynes helped Ned cover up Jon Snows birth parents because they were loyal to the Targaryens, and probably hold Ned in high regard as well , since they named the Lord of Starfall after him . I follow this theory there is more evidence for this than ragar and lyanna especially considering aegon is a separate character in the books and more likely to be there’s Jon is a Ned clone in every way. He calls him his son, he hasn’t thought of ragar in quite years bit weird if your raising his kid and the hair to starfall is called Ned named after Ned stark bit weird if your sister killed herself because of a stark and your brother was killed by a different one. Also George has a thing if you don’t see them die they ain’t dead. Even Cersei knew about Ned and ashara. “I wonder did Ashara kill herself over the brother you slew or the baby you took?” It’s in the first season and the first book. R+L=J is bollocks even George’s wife laughed at it when a fan brought it up saying that’s too simple for George he doesn’t do fairy tails.

-there are tons of characters who are missing and we'll never find out if they are dead or not, Asharas suicide isn't even questioned by in universe characters, they all agree that she is dead. And to name a few characters who vanish but are considered dead by other characters and most of the fandom: Gerion Lannister, Tyrek Lannister, Raynald Westerling, Syrio Forell and don't even get started with F&B. -the whole Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen can't be book canon to begin with and doesn't say anything about the books since it's utterly made up by the show runners. -Ned Dayne is Edric Dayne, not Eddard, he isn't named after Ned Stark and Edric doesn't even think that Ashara is Jon's mother, but his wetnurse Wylla is. -Cersei is the worst source for everything, but it's a common rumor that Ashara is Jon's mother, which is evidence for her being Jon's mother, but not actual proof. -you stated that Howland was the only one there for "Aegons birth and Jon's removal", I'm guessing you are refearing to Jon Snow in both cases, since Howland was never near any Aegon during his birth, but that is currently a show only thing and we have no confirmation of Howland being present for Jon Snows birth in the books, we only know that Howland found Ned with Lyannas body, which is usually used as evidence for R+L=J, not N+A=J -Ned doesn't even think about his own dead mother, why would he consistently think of Rhaegar? The only dead person Ned thinks of and dreams of often is Lyanna. -GRRM wife laughing at things does not mean anything in the context of canon, she could be laughing because she knows it's true, she could be laughing because she knows it's false, she could be laughing because it's dumb to ask her. -there is nothing wrong with N+A=J as a theory, but you're mixing up a few things here between show and book canon and there are plenty decent points in the N+A=J theory that matches the books, I'd say less evidence than R+L=J, but plenty to make a decent theory

Okay, I need to ask this, but do people think that Jon’s mom could be Ashara and his dad could be Brandon? Like, if she did sleep with Brandon, Jon could have existed right? I mean, Catelyn does just call Jon a babe when he’s brought to winterfel, and maybe he was a little small, so he looked like a baby. And maybe, if the older Jon doesn’t make sense, Ashara could have met Brandon before him going into the Red Keep. I know that R+L=J is the best theory we have but I would love to see Jon have some people to throw up as possible moms.

There's another theory that Ashara is alive and is in the Neck. She married Howland Reed and is Jojen and Meera's mother. I feel this makes more sense than septa lemore because it'd be hard to miss Ashara's haunting purple eyes

It hurts when you realize Catelyn Stark died thinking NEd cheated on her, when he was loyal and faithful not only to her, but Lyanna as well. I know she's alive in the books, but considering how long Geroge is taking to write them, I know winter will come before the next book releases lol.

I've been seeing that there a number of people (not a big number but a noticeable one) who don't like this idea, which makes me suspect that they don't like the idea of the mystery being ruined. But it makes sense because Lyanna is presented in a way that doesn't make her a straight up candidate, because we're led to believe that Ned is the father, when in reality Ned is the distraction. And besides, why would the mystery of Jon's mother matter so much to keep hidden? Unless if it was to protect him.

@@all4joffrey92 Despite Jon's connection to the Targaryens through Rhaegar, he's still a Stark because of Lyanna. In fact, he looks far more like a Stark than any of the other Stark children, with the exception of Arya, who resembles Lyanna. And it has been said that Arya and Jon look alike. Also, it isn't too hard to believe that Jon was gifted a direwolf. It's to represent his Stark blood within. It could very well be possible that after he's brought back to life in the books, he could embrace his Targaryen side by finding and bonding with a dragon later on, discovering a balance between both Stark and Targaryen. The series is called 'A Song of Ice and Fire'.

She may still be Jon’s mother in the books. We can’t be sure which direction GRRM will go.

Wylla and the Fisherman's daughter are two separate persons. They and Ashara are thought to be Jon's mother in different parts of Westeros. In the Vale, they believe his mother is the Fisherman's daughter, and that she named Jon after Jon Arryn. In Starfall and possibly the rest of the Dorne people believe Jon's mother to be Wylla, a servant from Starfall. And some people like Cercei believe Jon's mother was Ashara Dayne. Fortunately, no one in Westeros suspects Lyanna Stark.

Jon's mother is Lyanna Stark. He is a Targaryan by birth and not Ned's son or Brandon's. I prefer this myself, and I am sure that this is really what GRRM intends in the end. But since the books will never be finished to know for sure, we will never know.

So Ned would have gone to war against his sister? Robert’s rebellion makes no sense. All Rhaegar would have to do would be to reveal that Leanna dumped Robert for him which is what happened. Ned would not choose Robert over his sister. R+L=J is a cop out theory. Ashara being Jon’s mother and Ned having to care for Jon while being forced to marry Catelyn Tully is the appropriate response by both Ned and Catelyn in the book. Catelyn is upset by Jon’s presence as Ned’s bastard with the woman he truly loved and Ned is protective of Jon because of the love he had for his mother and also on the back foot due to Catelyn’s jealousy. It also gives Littlefinger’s betrayal of Ned a better understanding since Littlefinger loved Cat but she was given to Ned. I sincerely hope Martin does not take the R+L=J approach to finish the books since with the introduction of Griff, it is a terrible premise and as I pointed out, makes no sense no matter how much emotional impact it may have.

I also find it very strange that house Dayne holds Ned in such high regard since all that we think we know is that he had an affair with Ashara during Harrenhal tourney and then killed ser Arthur

The whole situation is made even more strange considering how high of an opinion House Dayne has for Eddard. Young Ned Dayne is named after him and generally has nothing but good things to say about him. Why would the supposed murderer of the pride of house Dayne be so well liked? Just because he returned Dawn? Definitely missing crucial parts of the whole story here

Is Asharas death confirmed in the books? I've heard that she jumps to her death, but do we ever hear of them recovering a body or anything? Only on the second book, so pardon the ignorance

I don't know why Brandon is more likely. He was engaged. Ned was free at the time. This really does beg the question, do we think Ned Stark was a virgin groom? He seems faithful to Cat, but did he sleep with anyone before her? Are we sure of anyone?

it's not more likely at all she slept with Brandon instead of ned 😭 this is literally a theory based on the word of the 60 something yo guy who had a crush on her (and even thats a stretch bc he didnt even name brandon) .. and that had no way of knowing her inner thoughts or what happened inside the shared stark tent.. it is said by multiple people, including people from outside of Winterfell, that ned and ashara had a thing. Jon not being their son doesn't cancel that out. Even the one time he mentions Ashara seems like he doesn't want people to think of her like that, and gets really angry when Cat brings her up
