It holds some considerable nostalgia value for me, but purely as music I find that I can't really listen to most of that stuff nowadays (I'm 35 for reference). It's not music I would ever throw on just to listen to for like aesthetic enjoyment. Just doesn't do it for me. But yeah, definitely makes the nostalgia bubble up in a bittersweet way, so once in a blue moon I will play those old songs as a kinda detached trip down memory lane.

I’ll tell you why Justin: big hooks, good vibes, a marriage of two huge genres that historically tend to compete with each other. For a lot of people that like classic rock, thrash metal, metalcore, punk. All of the rich and varied genres of rock music. Pop punk is the sub-genre that generates that triumphant, anthemic, party music for a significant chunk of this crowd. It’s a celebration of the wall of sound that full bands produce. It’s fun and easy to sing along to, like a lot of pop music, but with the stipulation that power chords and a full kit kick you through the song while you do.

The godfathers of pop punk are the Descendents who formed in 1979 and dropped their massively influential album “Milo Goes to College” in 1981 and came up with bands like Black Flag. And even though they’re my favorite punk band, I would argue that The Ramones chronologically probably have them beat for adding a sense of pop melody to punk music. So my point is, you’re not too old for pop punk. It’s been around since the late 70s, even if the name “pop punk” didn’t exist yet.

A lot of Punk has always had something of a Pop aesthetic. From the Dolls and the Ramones to the Pistols and the Damned to The Decendants and NOFX and all points in between, its marrying that raw emotional sound to hooks and melodies. The Clash included Reggae and Ska influences as well so its always been something of a melting pot.

It doesn't really appeal to me (probably because I'm not big on pop in general), but each to their own. And yeah, Perth weather. A good chunk of desert goes through Western Australia. It's not fun, I remember. I'm in Melbourne - notoriously unpredictable weather, but much cooler overall. And I'll be at your show tomorrow night, can't wait! A lot of the lyrics in pop punk are hugely relatable for many people because the songwriters in these bands have been through similar shit in their lives to the rest of us, so there's an emotional connection that resonates with the audience. The music is generally pretty basic and predictable compared to other rock sub-genres and that's how it should be - we already know what to expect and we enjoy that sort of familiar, reliable comfort. It's fun, energetic, infectious, inclusive, vulnerable, earnest, harmless, tasteful and we live for it!

Literally seeing Neck Deep tonight (Feb 1st)! They got me thru high school, man While I like this song, I don't LOVE it (yet.) The same goes for their drummer (I don't want to be mean, I just really loved their previous drummer Dani.) I've yet to listen to their latest album in full (I know. It's a few hours before the show lol) and the one before that was ok. They both have/had decent singles. But the albums The Peace & The Panic and Life's Not Out To Get You are amazing. In fact,, their whole catalog has gems that go hard ("What Did You Expect?" "Over and Over") and that are beautiful & sweet ("A Part Of Me" "In Bloom.") Kudos to them because they always try to stay inspirational ("Gold Steps" "Motion Sickness"), they run their own merch shop, & a few days ago they powered thru food poisoning & played a show. I love them ❤

Justin, I'm fast approaching 50 and love Pop Punk. Yes even the new stuff. It's a large umbrella genre, not only this stuff but also some emo, easycore, post-hardcore, actual punk and metal are included. Neck Deep's 'The Peace and the Panic' is considered a modern classic of the genre. You should listen to my favourite song by them, Wish You Were Here, it's so melancholic it brings a tear to my eye. Another great song by them is called In Bloom. I love Pop Punk because precisely because of the clash - the harshness and the sweetness, there's so much misery in the world it brings a burst of joy into peoples lifes. Also it gets teens into playing guitar, which in my book, the world needs more of.

I was the bald moustachioed bloke in the hot pink fairy bread shirt near the front at the Fremantle gig last night - we shared a moment when you looked lovingly at me for half a millisecond while I moshed enthusiastically to the punishing opening bars of the Immigrant Song rendition, which was most appreciated. Thought I'd extend my gratitude for taking on the role of Rock Dad for us all and heavily berating the phone toting degenerates who frequently ruin The Moment. These kids gotta learn somehow. Good explanation. I liked some pop punk when it became a thing and still like it. I now understand why the guys 10-20 years younger than me feel that way about it. For guys my age, a lot of us feel that way about NWOBM, thrash and for some, hair metal. Lots of happy memories before life became complicated.

Is 'angst" the word you were thinking of? It's OK this song, not really my cup of tea in regard to punk or pop punk. I am a thousand years old though, so the style of punk I enjoy is very different, including the pop punk I enjoy. They definitely have a Blink influence in there. As for Summer in Australia, yes, it's the worst. My mood usually goes bad in November and stays that way until March. We've had two heatwaves here (in Brisbane) and a cyclone up north and non stop rain for a month. It's slightly better now, so hopefully it will be nice when you get here next week. See you then! PS: Speaking of punk/hardcore and summer, thee is a Canadian band called "Fucked Up" who have song called "I Hate Summer" and it swims around my head from Nov-March.

Pop punk has existed for 40s. Neck Deep has played festivals you’ve played at. I’m surprised you’re not aware. The term “pop punk” was used because Descendents were equally as influenced by The Beach Boys as they were by the Ramones during a period when hardcore was established as the punk norm (the ‘80s). Check out The Wonder Years. They were considered the leaders of the genre in the early 2010s and are an excellent live band.
