Who are the Irish?

Covering the origins and nature of the Irish people from their earliest beginnings to the modern day through archaeology, mythology and history. It is only the most brief of introductions and focuses more on origins and myth so do not expect an in-depth history, but a quick overview of some important points.
Feel free to dispute specific figures. I typically went with mid-range estimates. The fact is, nobody actually knows the true figures, but they were massive and terrible.
Also, unlike most of my Irish-related videos where I often try to use Old Gaelic pronunciation, I do try to use modern (Munster-ish) pronunciation throughout this video for names, though there may be some inconsistencies or errors. Obviously I am not a native speaker. I can only try my best.

The fist step for the modern Gaels is the revival of our language. There's a reason the English were so adamant about eradicating the Irish and Welsh languages going so far as to beat children in school for speaking there own language. Language is part of the very foundation of a culture. The fact is they beat the pride out of us, the pride for our own language and now Ireland and the descendants of the Gael have a complicated relationship with our language and there is even a debate in Ireland as to weather the language is even worth reviving but thankfully that seems to have shifted in favor of Gaeilge in recent years more young people have taken interest and the internet is breathing new life into the language but its up to us to save it. There is no Gaelic culture without Gaeilge.

@@peterhoulihan9766 it’s a double-edged sword; I’m seeing first hand how some local, poorly educated and unskilled Welsh people who merely speak Welsh (and not the highest quality of the language, mind) are being given jobs in Wales above more qualified white British people (Welsh includes) who do not speak it fluently. We should always reward merit over statistical suitability which might make companies look good but ultimately make them perform to a lesser standard. This is, of course, no excuse when it comes to other incoming groups of suspect motives.

@Alexander Holmes I have heard a theory that the English intentionally allowed the Irish to continue being Catholics, saying “if they become Protestants soon they’ll be wanting a bible in their own language!”. After the experience of this with us Welsh, it seems this was sufficient to let us retain our language and cultural identity enough that we were still enacting riots and causing them trouble. These are some of the possible reasons why Irish has declined to such a degree and Welsh has had some success. Language prestige is very importance and in Ireland this was Latin for the church, while in Wales, at least, the chapel culture had the people singing, weekly, in our own language… Nonetheless, while Ireland should be Irish, a United Britain and strong British Isles with a firm, fast relationship would be best for the future. Celts, aren’t we all?

I sometimes wonder if the myths about the Underworld, the Land Beneath the Waves, holy wells, etc. are memories of the rising seas at the end of the Ice Age. It makes sense that the Bell Beaker people would've lived in the lowlands (incl. Doggerland) and would've had to migrate. It has always fascinated me that such memories can still be found, even in records written by monks that transcribed things they didn't really understand in a then-new Christian perspective that didn't quite fit. A culture that buried older monuments like Newgrange with reverence, avoided being civilised by the Romans, incorporated and fostered Christianity, precluded Norse domination, and survived imperial rule into the mid-19th century when Irish cultural/linguistic domination began to fade with the emigrant boats. I wish we had a political class that didn't hate us with such fervour. What could we do then?

Saying "Celt" should be prohibited, that was a broad term given to Europeans by the Greeks, so technically, everybody's Celtic. Even the tribes we know of were made up of smaller clans, individual and distinct from each other, so that term is reductive and not really representative of anyone's heritage. I know learning the names of thousands of tribes is not possible or convenient for the average person that's why we say Celtic and we conjure that image of a mustached dude with no armor and a large shield being trampled by legionaries. But saying Celtic, Barbarian, or foreigner equates to the same as they would've been the term used by the historians we draw our written sources from, mostly Greek and Roman.

However the full story is: _"In the first century BC, Roman leader Julius Caesar reported that the Gauls called themselves 'Celts', Latin: Celtae, in their own tongue.[30] _*_Thus whether it was given to them by others or not, it was used by the Celts themselves."_* Same people called themselves Roman aftwards, but most likely not Celts as an umbrella term, as the notion of globalization wouldn't be introduced much later on, and a term to define them as wel. As I said, common misconception accepted by scholars, but wrong nonetheless.

I just found out recently that Lughs burial site is in a town called Neale in Mayo, had you heard of that before? It is just a standing stone sitting right beside a house. I was actually pretty shocked to see that one of the greatest god kings of Ireland is being remembered that way. My folks have a cottage near there and the next time I visit I am going to plant a Yew tree by his standing stone.

I was there recently! There's no plaque, no sign, no nothing, you wouldn't know it was there unless you knew it was there 😅 It's concrete around it so can't really plant a tree next to it, but there's a field near it, maybe you could there. There are so many amazing ancient sites within a few miles radius of that area. Most of them are barely known, not like if they were in the east of the country! I think it's a good thing though, they're more pure and untouched. It's a great area to visit to connect to our ancient sites

@@EasternOrthodox101 considering the way the Irish have been treated in the past, that makes sense having a link to the Slavic people. They say the word slave originates from the "Slavs".. I remember reading somewhere that around the Polish area there was once a developed society that was leaderless and without any crime, stealing was an alien concept. People took on responsibilities but essentially everyone was deemed as equal. Probably around the era of the druidic culture - incredibly harmonious until other outside forces changed that dynamic. I see you posting everywhere. Can I ask what is your drive to inform people about? That essentially we're all linked at some level? The Conquest of Ireland arguably wasn’t fully completed until the Act of Union in 1800 when the Kingdom of Ireland (after centuries of constitutional and regime changes) was forcibly merged into the British state (though our civil service and courts remained separate, and we retained our legislative representatives). Those representatives forced to sit in London instead of Dublin, but went back to Ireland in 1919 and declared independence in a reconstituted Irish Parliament (copying the Hungarian walkout of the Austrian parliament in the 1860s). European history is very complicated as you can imagine .

You don't have to stretch your imagination too far to suggest that the current influx of people to Ireland and Britain is intentional and the policy of a ruling class. These new planters come from lands with no connection to our lands, they come here under false declaration and the purpose is to cause social chaos and further destroy the culture and fabric of society. Irish culture is dying, especially in Dublin. I see it getting worse, day by day, and it saddens me deeply, however, I do not blame these people, they do not know that they are being used and they are getting a better/easier/richer life, it is just a shame that we are paying with our taxes, for the destruction of our own nations, the death of our cultures, all in the name of a new world order. We have gotten to a point in history that people in the future will never know, they will never be educated about the time when the world was largely free of tyranny, freedom will be myth that will be dismissed as a ghost story. Enjoy freedom while you can, we are losing.

Sadly in Ireland we are now being betrayed by our own establishment politicians and legacy media. Our culture is slipping away before our very eyes. Not casting any shade on the many thousands of migrants flooding our nation, but on the Irish administration that refuses to adopt a practical approach to immigration. Our island is tiny and our political elite seems to be trying to squeeze the entire continent of Africa here. Africa into Ireland won't go. It's causing a great deal of hardship for both the hoards of people arriving and the displaced Irish natives who are being forced into poverty.

Well, Irish are always welcome in the US. I guess all countries go or have gone the open door routine! I think that's why Mauii (if you know about the fire) got burned! The native people want their lives back the way it was before the white came to earn artistic livings off tourism! The videos of Ireland are beautiful! I was there several times many years ago. We were good for the economy. We did a lot of shopping. We stayed in B&B's! The US went through what your country is going through now. Italians in their section, the Germans in their neighborhood, Jews in another part of the city. We, too, have a big, big, big problem with human beings from other countries "lnvading" our land! The Irish had a hard time when they came here. My best friend was an Irish nurse who met her Indian husband in NYC. Had a lovely family, and now both are deceased. So goes the World! Let's pray that it keeps spinning for a long while!!! God Bless Ireland and the whole world!!!!!!!!
