@@temptemp4174 what kind of question is that? west bengali people are a part of the nation of india and they have a bengali identity as well as a indian identity and bond with the nation. its not as easy just join bangladesh. people had a choice to migrate from their land and go to east bengal/east pakistan aka bangladesh from their home in west bengal due to the whims of the british, some did and the rest chose to stay in the land they have been living as their ancestors did before them. the idea of East Pakistan wasn't originally for "Bengali people" it was for a Muslim nation like Pakistan, it was later that it turned out to be Bangaldesh- for the Bangla People identity rather than the East-West Pakistani Muslim identity. India is a land where there are many ethnic groups co exists and these groups are of all religions- Gujrati, Tamils,Kashmiris,Marathis Punjabis,Telugus,Malayalis,Kannadigas and more, Everything isnt as easy and dandy as you think it to be and the logic behind your question is void.

Lord Curzon divided bengal in 1905, yet we are fighting with each other till this day

Tagore is the most well-known and beloved Indian writer in Korea because he expressed active solidarity with Koreans when Korea was under Japanese imperialist rule. His poem is taught in textbooks, and there is a bronze bust of him in Daehagro, the center of literature and theater (where Tagore's plays are often performed as well) and it's often decorated with fresh garlands. The founder/director of the Indian Museum fell in love with Indian and Bengal culture through her love of Tagore's works. I haven't read all of his works (please cut me some slack, there's just too many), just some poems and short stories and plays, but each time it amazes me how beautifully written and also perceptive and progressive (even by today's standards) they are. I enjoyed how the Netflix movie Bulbul included not only Bengali folklore, but also references to Tagore's works. I will definitely read Gora (and Rokeya Hossain's works!) after watching this video.

Struggle etc is our forte and pursuit of aspirational goods/services does not drive us...Instead one measures the fruitfulness of one's life in terms of inner strife to reach greater good. I doubt if ever a western raised sensibility can understand this ethos...its very very different way of living than the west. Many parts of India share this ethos and is one common thing that binds us rather than language/food/dress.

Just watched on Nebula! My wife and I, two of the most obnoxious proud Bengali bores you could imagine, who pride ourselves on knowing our history and culture, learnt so much. I am so blown away that you’ve managed such an expansive overview and I love all the attention to little details. Food! Football! Some innovative pronunciations too 😜 So many references! Like an academic thesis. I especially appreciated the medieval history, as well as detailed coverage of the horrors of Partition and the 1970s. My family were heavily involved with relief efforts after the cyclone and then the war, episodes that so few in the West know much about, with most coverage about Independence focusing on the Western border. At times it was a really hard watch, but you’ve done an amazing job. খুব ভালো, জয় বাংলা!

As a Bangladeshi, this video made me cry so much. The people of my country went through so much suffering to defend the country I live in so lavishly. I will never forget the sacrifice of the people of Bengal. Without their sacrifice, none of us would be able to be free. I see my classmates and even elders make fun of and hate on my country because we are “poor and underdeveloped.” The only thing that matters to Bangladeshi people is Religion. It is heartbreaking to see how much beautiful culture we have ignored because of our focus on religion. I only wish that one day they will realise what Bangladesh has become and how much culture and history there is behind every single thing here. One thing I admire about India is how proud they are of both their country and religion simultaneously. I only wish for that to happen in Bangladesh as well.

Wow! Couldn’t have asked for a better video on this topic. As someone who received 1-12th grade general education in Bangladeshi curriculum in Saudi Arabia based school - I learned so many intricate details and nuances about the greater Bengal region in this video. Goes on to show the level of depth and painstaking research the people involved with the production of this video went through. I could be wrong but I’m not aware of any video in such depth on this topic in Bangla on youtube. Super grateful to the people involved in the production of this video.

Had literal goosebumps I am a Bengali from Bangladesh but I liked how you didn't focus on Bangladesh or West Bengal, rather represented the entire history, culture as a whole which is exactly what we are. We may be divided by borders, but are Bengalis wherever we may be. Although it was a long video, it would have been great if you could add a bit about Bengali language movements in India, especially in Assam (still ongoing) and how Purulia became a part of West Bengal.

As a Bangladeshi, our history books and national events mainly focus on Pakistan ruling and liberation war. I wish kids in my country would know history before 1947 more deeply and realise how we Bangalis were one of the biggest if not the biggest sufferers of British Empire. Although we are taught about our golden past but the part how it was brutally snatched from us, how we went from artists to farmers due to starvation and oppression should be taught more clearly and boldly as we are taught about Pakistani oppression. Really loved this video, the details were amazing. Proud to be a Bangali.

41:39 this speech is something that gives me literal goosebumps and brings me to my knees knowing that my country suffered and struggled to see us, the descents speak in a language with sweet music,great poetry and one of the most sweetest language.

Bro explained stuff better than a bangali. Our bangla books made the poem ot though poets sound like jokes ... and they don't taught us like this. And i don't think anyone understand the history class either... our school system sucks as the Numbers matters more than the actual understanding and knowledge of the thing . And people can't even get the dream job with their 100 mark GOLDEN A+ degree. Bangladeshi school system is a joke.

Get out of that illusion! What happened during the referendum? Direct action day? Millions of Hindu Bengalis suffered, still suffer! So, I would rather focus on the Bengal of India for the present and the future. History is done and gotten away with it's ugly lessons. If you have forgotten it already, you invariably invite it to repeat itself, which we don't want at any cost. Nothing is goodie goodie rosy out there, we had to literally walk on thorns. There are a province/state in India called WEST BENGAL shares it's border line with the independent country BANGLADESH. Before August 1947, when India was undivided, Bangladesh means both Bangladesh and west bengal. The country now is known as Bangladesh since 1971 actually known was East Bengal. Later known as East Pakistan. In Bangladesh most people are Muslims when in West Bengal most people are Bengali. Men wear long/short Kurti with jeans/trousers/pajamas but formally wear shirts where women wear traditionally cotton/silk/jamdani sarees and casually wear salwar kamij/ kurti trousers. Dhakai Jamdani/bengali tant/kantha stitch/baluchori are popular work for fabrics. Women usually wear gold or terra cotta ornaments, sometimes pearls. Comparing rest of India, Bengalies prefer light coloured outfit and less ornaments. Shantiniketan in Bolpur is a popular place in West Bengal. Pronunciation is different in Bangladesh, Tripura and West Bengal people. In Kolkata people speak most formal Bengalies. Many Bengalis in both Bengal are secular comparing other South Asians. Unfortunately, common Bengali's income are less comparing other races in South India.

I am a bengali people from West Bengal. My sub caste is Namasudra, a worrior and most hard working community among Begali peoples. A major part of our community seems to be converted themselves into Islam specially at the time of Mughal empiror great Akbor. Previously Bengali were followers of Bhuddism. At that time there was no castism in Bengal. All time great bhuddist scholar GREAT ATISH DIPANKAR was born on this land . I think he had an idea about radio acitivity. Bhuddism was destroyed by brutal Hindu kings of Sen dynasty. They established brutal Cast system here in Bengal. And Begali peoples began to decline morally and its brutal lagacy still continue. Begali trapped themselves into different kinds of superstitions and ill customs like widow sacrifice and Norobali and child sacrifice to river goddess Ganga and so many. After Sen dynasty ISLAM began to rule Begal. A major portion of Hindu bengalis converted into Islam. Then came the British with scientific tempertment. They stopped different kind of ill customs of hindu bengalis here by strict laws. Muslim and Hindus has been fighting here for decades and cut one another into pieces. Irony is that genitically both are from same ethinicity.

Which textbook are you using, and how do you interpret it? You must have read the British CIE-approved textbook, where they portray themselves as the saint of God that brown skin needed. In our history class, we learned about Bengal's pre-Islamic dominance, the British Empire's barbaric reign, and Bangladesh's historic liberation war.

I am a Mangalorean Catholic with Goan Heritage. Our language Konkani surprisingly has lots of Bengali Loanwords. Also, the pronunciation and sounds are influenced a lot by Bengali even though our language is closer to Marathi. Just like Bengali, people also call Konkani a sweet language.

Thank you for this video. I am from Calcutta living in an adopted country thousands of miles away on the other side of the globe. I am married to someone from a different culture (of different native language) and this video was amazing to show my kids. As much as they know my culture through me and ourvisits back home, this video was so expansive and comprehensive and a wonderful one hour summary which kept my 10 and 12 year olds glued to this video!!

Ok. You will be surprised how much Bengali culture has weird similarities with Kerala.... like, Bengalis use coconut and fish in their meals like us. Most of them are not clear cut similarities but we can feel it when you interact with them. Of course their cultural history and influence are far far greater than Kerala's but the similarities are uncanny. We always had Bengali singers and Composers making Malayalam movie songs... Take our classic "chemmeen" for example.

I am a Bengali(from Bangladesh) living in Germany. Your video almost brought me to tears at some point. Bengal has fallen from the richest part of the world to the poorest economy in early 1970's. Which started mid-18th century with the start of British rule and then Pakistanis. I wish wish Bengal was never divided. Kudos to you for this thorough video. And I can say from my knowledge you are spot on. Great job to the editor/production team. This is very well made. I can imagine how hard it can be to produce a video of this quality starting from research to final product. To people all over the world, Bengali Language is the sweetest. I'm Telugu American, my parents are from Andhra Pradesh. I've been trying to understand my history and my roots, my entire life. Thanks for adding a metric load of history and culture to my identity to draw from.

Here's the background for the Bangladeshi flag: The red disc is offset slightly toward the hoist so that it appears centered when the flag is flying. The flag is based on a similar flag used during the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, which had a yellow map of the country inside the red disc. In 1972, this map was removed from the flag because of the difficulty for rendering the map correctly on both sides of the flag. The first version of the flag was designed and made by a section of student leaders and activists of Swadheen Bangla Nucleus in June 1970 at Dhaka University. The flag was made from clothes donated by Bazlur Rahman Lasker, the owner of Apollo Tailors at the Dhaka New Market. The map of what would be the new country was first traced from an atlas by the students and then was painted in the red circle by Shib Narayan Das. According to Shib Narayan Das, the green on the flag represents the landscape and the red circle represents the sun to symbolize a new day and end of oppression from Pakistan.

@@habibaurmee7727not really, as someone from Bangladesh we were taught as kids that the red in the flag represents the sun rising from the horizon stained with our blood spilled from gaining freedom from 1971. Yes the Awami league has had a socialist bg when it was in charge of the government directly after the war under Sheikh Mujibor Rahman, but its slowly changing course towards a more capitalistic approach and not focusing on agriculture entirely. Basically its like the CCP except they dont entirely have the balls to pull off social credit system or are able to completely able to brainwash people to the point they are ultra-nationalist and willing to be martyrs. Ive seen my own generation not give a damn abt politics and more interested in building a career and achieving success in life.

Bangla and India are two separate things. British pushed East Bangla into India.

@@SheikhAhmadShah False. Bangla and India are one and the same thing. Perso-Arabic forces pushed East Bangla out of India's cultural sphere. But you guys still use an Indic Bengali script (not Perso Arabic) for writing Bengali, use a National Anthem written with zero Arabic words in it by an Indian nationalist Bengali and sing the classical music which originates from the ancient Indian Sanskrit text Natyashastra. Get this in your mind, only BANGLADESH is separate from India, Bengal as a whole is not.

As a Native of Purulia, I could have never have imagined to see someone cover Bengali let alone Chau at such detail. Kudos Cogito.

As a pakistani, thank you so much for creating this. I love the bengali people their history and culture is so incredibly rich and what has happened to them is one of the worst ways any group of people have been subjugated. I pray for a strong and prosperous bangladesh i want to see it regain its precolonisl wealth. As a pashtun in pakistan specifically the way the bengali people fought for their language and culture is so inspiring i wish we do the same.

Still, it's hard to deny the dedication and hard work that went into making this video. Now, there's a crucial point I'd like to address. It might seem like a minor detail, but it's essential. The video mentions that the Pakistani army caused 1.7 million casualties. However, based on my understanding, the actual number is "AT LEAST" 3 million lives lost. That's a staggering difference. And it's not just lives lost; "AT LEAST" two hundred thousand women were subjected to unimaginable horrors through rape. But the devastation doesn't end there. The aftermath of this conflict resulted in widespread destruction, including the leveling of buildings, the tearing up of roads, and the destruction of railroads. Even just before their defeat, they went on killing the brilliant minds of our country, like professors, teachers, lawyers and journalists. Bangladesh still to date struggles to recover from this catastrophe. Recognizing the tragedy's full scope is essential to understand its impact on the affected region. In the end, while the video may have shortcomings in portraying the complexity of history, it undeniably serves as a powerful starting point for those seeking to learn more about this significant chapter in the Bengals' past.

While in Bangladesh, that is the figure, its actually slightly less according to Internation figures. Which is probably what he went with. Which one is right is debatable, but usually its suggested to use neutral sources, like Australia or something.

It’s actually 300,000. The misconception comes from when Sheikh Mujib was on an English Talk show and he asked what 3 lakh was in English, and someone told him 3 million. It’s on the official transcript.

@@onishomar489 No, thats "at least" 300000 lives lost. Most bodies were never bound. It is estimated to be around 1.5 M-1.7M.
