Lewa did deserve it in 2020 which Messi graciously asked France Football to give it to him. Shows his class. Who else would have done that? Not Ronaldo,for sure.

Lewandowski definitely deserved the award in 2020 and I’m glad he picked up the “striker of the year” as a consolation. But why was there no “midfielder of the year” or “defender of the year”. Forward players are already favoured in the main award and they ADD another striker award? I’d be fuming if I was a defender!!

There was no middlefielder and defender of the year because the only reason they created the striker prize was to give Messi the ballondor and try to give something to lewa, wich actually looked more like an humilliation than a prize, ridiculous award, ridiculous bias toward Messi, lewa was clear in 2020, and is still clear till this day.

Lewa has 77 goal + assists this year, broke a legendary football Record held by Gerd Muller scoring 41 goals in 29 games in the bundesliga, and consistently played in a ballondor level trough all the year. He did that playing less games than Messi by the way, and Messi has 58 goal contributions, That's quite a difference. Messi won because of one Month where he scored against bolivia and his team gave him a Trophy while he ghosted against Brazil as usual. Only reason Messi won It was bias and he's a Lot more famous than Lewa. If you wanted to give the ballondor to who won the best trophies Jorginho WA your pick not Messi, Jorginho won the greatest club level tournament and the best tournament at a National team level in the year too.

I think Fundamentally there's a large problem with WHEN the votes are submitted already. If it's supposedly the award for the best player in a year, then why does voting close 2 months and 6 days BEFORE the year is even finished, it's like deciding on the NBA MVP when there's still 20 games left to the season or awarding the Oscars before the year is finished, there's a whole 2 months that can change ALOT even if just slight and can't be ignored. This year shows just that, as even though Lewandowski and Messi so far have 74 and 59 G/A in 2021 respectively, by the time voting closed on October 24th Messi had 56 and Lewandowski had 62, that's a combined 15 G/A from both players added to their tallys that the votes DIDN'T account for and there's probably even more to go considering there's still another MONTH to go after the Ballon D'or has been awarded, that's alot to ignore

Tbf it always seems to me that the ballon d’or is always based on seasonal performance rather than annual performance with the ballon d’or just being delayed to around the end of the year, based off how highly/lowly ranked certain players are at the end of the voting and how it always seems to favour the first half of the year more than the second half

The same reason why someone could be born in January and they still have to wait until January the following year and not December to celebrate their b day. The voting ends at the time it ends because the votes are only for a single season of play plus any other international tournaments or games

The problem is them scrapping the award last year which Lewandowski deserved to win hands down. If he won it last year and Messi this year, I don't think the outrage would be the same as it is now. And you're spot on when you said it affects the fans more than the players.

Facts. If it was awarded to Lewa in 2020 and to Messi in 2021,than I don’t think that people would’ve commented that much.

For me both messi and lewa deserved it, yes lewa scored more goals but he also plays in arguably the best team in the world, and definitely the best team in Germany as a striker. On the other hand messi carried an underperforming barcelona and significantly contributed to Argentina's Copa America win, we are all seeing what is happening to barca now that he is gone. I do believe that lewa should have gotten the 2020 ballon dor, he deserved it more than anyone. For this year i don't care either way

For the guys who are mentioning the 2013 and 2019 Ballon D'or 2013 Ballon D'or : Ronaldo didn't win any major trophy and won whereas Ribery won the Treble (UCL, League and League Cup) and still finished 3rd in Ballon D'or Voting. Ronaldo and Ribery were both wingers/wide players that year. Ronaldo scored 59 goals for Madrid that year and Ribery scored 16 goals for Bayern. In the 2012/13 UCL, Ronaldo was top scorer with 12 goals whereas Ribery only scored 1 goal. Ronaldo was without a doubt the best player at Madrid in the 2012/13 season and the only one keeping them competitive. I agree Ribery was the best player at Bayern during the 2012/13 season but was Robben, Lahm and Neuer that far from him. They were also as important as Ribery to that Bayern team's success. 2019 Ballon D'or : Van Dijk won the UCL, finished runner's up in the Nations League and runner's up in the League (1 point) but still finished 2nd to Leo Messi who had only won La Liga that year. Messi scored 51 goals from 50 games for Barca in 2018/19. Was the Top Scorer in the League and UCL. He was by far the best player at Barca and the only one who was keeping them competitive on all fronts right till the end. I do agree Van Dijk had one of the best seasons a defender has had in recent memory but was Van Dijk carrying that Liverpool team like Messi carried Barca? Was the likes of Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Allisson that far from Van Dijk during that season? They were also as important as Van Dijk to that Liverpool team's success. When Messi and Cristiano retire, we all will truly realize how great they were season after season for such a long time...

But you're justifying those wins, Ronaldo in 2013 and Messi in 2019, by thrm having better goal scoring statistics than their rivals. This, and last, season Lewandowski has been the better goal scorer and won everything there was to win at club level. Lewandowski was to 2020 and 2021 what Messi was to 2019.

The Ballon D'or lost all it's credibility when Diego Milito wasn't even nominated in 2010... Diego Milito won 5 trophies with Inter in 2010 (Seria A, Copa Italia, UCL, Club World Cup and Super Copa) . He was arguably their best and most important player during the 2009/10 season. He was Inter's top goal scorer and he scored 30 goals that season (14 more than any other Inter Milan Player) which included 22 in the league and 6 in the UCL. Was 2nd top scorer in Serie A and 3rd top scorer in UCL. Diego Milito scored the only goal in the Copa Italia final against Roma and also scored in the Semi Final against Fiorentina, scored the winning goal in the last match of Serie A that won Inter the league, Milito bagged a brace against FC Bayern in the UCL final and also scored in the round of 16, QF and SF of the UCL against Chelsea, CSKA and Barcelona. He also scored several other decisive goals that season. Despite doing all this, Diego Milito wasn't even nominated for the Ballon D'or in 2010. ( Was he not even among the top 23 players in the world? )

I think what hurts the most is the fact that history will see Robert as "one of those guy". What I mean by this is that he'll be in the league of greats, no doubt. But for the generations after us, he'll only be "one of the legends", maybe cherished by Byern or Poland fans, some DEEP football fans, but that's it. Players like Alan Sheera, Cantona, Patrick Viera, etc. These guys are, legends, no doubt. But realistically, most of the fans around the world only got to know about them when they got deep into football, especially the fans from my generation. Sure, they gained my respect, but when a guy like me, who started watching football in 2012, when I was 10, I'd say legends for me are Zidanes, Ronaldo Naz, Maradona, etc. The reason these guys are in my list is because they dominated football, and history recognises them as huge legends with massive accolades. Part of the reason why they were, and are huge is cause they won a Ballandor. As a kid, hearing about this award, you just think it's the only assessment for greatness. I mean sure, over the years, you become more objective with the assessment of best player, but in your subconscious, Ballandor always clouds you. That's why players like Raul, Henry, etc.etc., I'll always never have them in my bests, cause they never won one. Robert not winning the Ballandor will put him with them. That doesn't make him a bad player, but I can see kids 20+ years later seeing Lewa and just going "hmm, one of the legends cool". He deserves to be up top with Ronaldo and Messi for sure. Salah, Benzema, Robert, Kante, etc. Will become the new Henry's and gang and Ronaldo, Messi, fuck, even Modric will join the Maradona and gang, because of this fucking stupid award. I hope what I was trying to articulate made some sense.

For sure not. Lewandowski never up there with Messi and Ronaldo Lewa plays in farmers League and has only half of the goals Messi and Ronaldo have. Also Messi and Ronaldo contribute more to their team. Messi is also a Playmaker, Assist giver and Ronaldo leads his team. Lewandowski does none of that, hasnt even scored half of the goals these guys have while playing in a team that is dominating their own League for years because they are richer than the other clubs

Ballon d'or is a subjective award and not statistical award, unlike the Golden boot. We simply can't measure the winner of ballon d'or based on statistics as there are different positions in football and each contribute differently. I am more surprised, why they didn't make more statistical awards for each aspect of the game. Then there would be no debate. Golden boot is the major award for goals. But there isn't a major award for most assist made by a midfielder, most saves made by a keeper, most successful tackles and interceptions made by a defender in a particular season. That way we could recognize the quality if players in each positions. Well, in olden days it was difficult to collect these data's so they decided to give the ballon d'or based on votes. But now in modern football they should introduce more statistical awards like these to recognize the deserved and true winners.

Why are everyone complaining about Salah finishing 7th? The Ballon D'or voting got over around mid Oct. Salah didn't win anything with Liverpool last season and barely made it to the Top 4. Harry Kane who performed better than him last season (Top scorer + Most Assists in the League) and also reached the Euro's final, still ended up at 23rd position. I do agree that Salah's been fantastic for the last 2-3 months and that will make him a contender for the next year's Ballon D'or (2022). Kindly stop making his current form the argument for him finishing higher in a Ballon D'or whose voting ended 2 months ago.

Kane finishing in 23rd though was a travesty and doesn't prove that Salah should have finished 7th at all. Liverpool were terrible last season, Salah was pretty much the only on form player. This argument of not winning anything is really dumb, Messi only won Copa America and that's hardly a big deal when it's a competition isolated from the rest of the world, i respect his performance but a single player definitely can't carry a team and it's not like Argentina isn't one of the best national teams in the world, let's not act like Messi was the only reason why they won the title when they have multiple quality players. I feel like there was some bias because he's widely considered the goat and since he had a very good year they decided that they might as well give him another ballon d'or while he's still around, just like how in 2020 it should've been Lewandowski but covid things and well they would give it to Messi simply because he's Messi at this point, there's way too much bias imo.

I would like an award for the best striker, the best midfielder, the best defender and goalkeeper of the year. They actually made an award at UEFA and I liked that system because there is better comparison since players are divided in their roles in a team and certain stats for their respective role can be easier figured out. This would also help more players to be recognized. But if we want to award just one field player or overall player of the year, I do think this video is right in saying that we have to find out who had the biggest impact on the team and the teams success.

Well when your bias wins over talent it does matter but when talent annihilate your biases it doesn't matter ...simple as that

If the award is based on performance (individual performances since it's an individual accolade) as you claim, Messi would already have at least 10 ballon d'or. The only aspect the two players are compared is the GOALs scored. And it stops there. Goals scored aside, there's no way we compare the two players. What really upsets me about the likes of you is your tendency to confuse being goalscorer and being best player. The ballon d'or should recongise the best player not the topscorer. This huge confusion is the reason today, players like midfields, defenders or goalkeepers are missing in the ballon d'or shortlist(top 3). Only scorers are praised and in the spotlight. Everyone seems to be obsessed with goals

I think it's sad that people don't aknowledge the significance it was that the Gerd Müller record was broken by Lewandowski. Messi won the Copa but this record was thought to be impossible to beat. It feels wrong to even say that the most goals in one season weren't scored by Gerd Müller.

Many say lewa did bad internationally bcz of his bad team yet messi was able to carry a dying barca. Lewa had most goals but messi had most assists, key passes, dribbles, chances created. Lewa is the perfect striker today… but messi can’t be categorized as a striker he plays like a midfielder yet he’s able to keep up with goals of players who play like pure number 9s. Honestly, I like the Ballon d'Or. It's a good concept. Like you stated in your video, it has its pros and cons. I think the Ballon D'or should have a designated for each position in football. I believe that Ballon D'or is a prestigious award. Still, my only concern is that most people don't realize that you have to have a good midfielder squad, defender squad, and most importantly, an excellent goalkeeper to have a great striker. I think midfielders, defenders, and goalkeepers aren't getting the credit they deserve. I feel like to make it more meaningful to have one for defenders, midfielders, goalkeepers, and strikers to decrease the bias towards that award. Now, I know that some people might think that it's dumb to do it that way. As stated in your video, most Ballon D'or winners are primarily strikers. I believe this has been a significant bias towards this award because it always focuses more on the states than player effectiveness on the team. Van Dijk and Luka winning the award was controversial, but these two made a significant impact at least one time in a major tournament (Luka mainly the 2018 World Cup and Van Dijk in EP and Champions league). That's where I stand with the award. Come to think of it there's should be one the club as well. At this point I might be over steping this part a little. I would like to anyone opinion on where I stand with the award.

Quite frankly it's ridiculous to say Messi DIDN'T deserve it, he didn't rob anyone. Lewa was robbed last year ofc, but both of them would've deservedly won this year. Messi had another stellar year, so his win isn't some crazy conspiracy, I do believe they should award Lewa with 2020's Ballon d'Or though, that was a stupid call.

The ballon dor will always matter. Other than goal, assist and titles with club and country, when its this tight they have to calculate the individual player movement on the pitch in terms of dribbles, chances created, passes and those other stuff that makes midfielders have a chance in making top 5 in nominees. And Messi was the man

I'm gonna be honest I think Messi did deserve the Ballon D'or this year and everyone who won it deserves it but I'm gonna be honest I never saw any value in this award because at the end of the day this award is just an opinion, it's a bias created by Journalist to please themselves with really no other goal and while I do think Messi and Ronaldo were the best players in the world from 2008-2019 and absolutely deserved each of their Ballon D'or wins I still have never and I don't think I ever will see what the Value of the Ballon D'or is or if it holds any at all

The thing is we have advance stats that were made to pointing individual impact on the game more accurately than just saying 'he has more goals, he has more assists'. And Messi was indeed on top of Lewandowski for every major category except Goals per 90, while at the same time having literally half the score of Messi in "GCA". Which stands for "Goal-creating actions". This wasn't the best year Messi have had for sure, but you can acknowledge this while comparing him to himself, he has made people so accustomed to win by a big margin, that when he wins by a little bit people go nuts.

I agree people hold him to a higher standard. But my point was that even with all of that, comparing them on stats when their roles, positions, leagues and surroundings are different is not concrete at all.

This award lost its credibility a long time ago when in 2010 messi was awarded the ballon d'or instead of Sneijder because of most goal contributions. So I am not even remotely surprised. Same goes with Ronaldo in 2013 and 2014, messi in 2019 by robbing Van Dijk, a defender.

I thought Ramos should of won it in 2017. Real Madrid won la liga and became the first team to successfully defend the Champions League. Yes Ronaldo was the top scorer, but Ramos regularly played as a centre-forward for the ast 10minutes of games when Real were struggling to get a winner - or even needing an equalizer!! Ronaldo scored multiple goals in easy games but he wasn't the player winning them the points in tougher matches or getting them through the Champions League knock-out stages. The Ballon d'Or is constantly seeming more and more rigged by the sponsors and story writers.

@@rodgerjohnson297 the season your talking about Arsenal only won the FA cup. Juventus won Serie A, the Supercoppa Italia, and reached the Champions League final. Nedved was key too all of that, and Juventus would've had a stronger chance in the final against A.C. Milan if Nedved hadn't been suspended. The previous year Henry possibly deserved it more than Brazilian Ronaldo, since Arsenal had won a League and Cup double, while R9 won the award based on the world cup - which is only 7matches played. That said, Henry didn't even get the PFA award in 2002, van Nistelrooy got it that season... then Henry got it the following season despite Man Utd winning the Premiership and van Nistelrooy scoring more than he had the previous year. Henry possibly deserved it more than Shevchenko in 2004 considering Arsenal went undefeated in the Premiership. But I'd say Nedved deserved the 2003 award as much as anyone.

all i see here is that u all were complaining for lewi when i bet most of u have never watched his games in bayern to clearly see how big was his impact rather than messi's, so then you started using stats, defining lewy from messi by goals, while he is a striker and messi played as a playmaker, who did everything as in the midfield as in an attack too. like you guys don't like watching the other stats, such as created chances, motms, dribblings...but the other dudes do, so when messi deserved like 26 motms, lewi had 8 in 47matches, which means that messi carried barca and then became the best player, best scorer and best assistant in copa. only goals aren't football, at first they look at player's impact, his contribution not just as goals for goals, but goals, assists and staff for the team at first, and at that year messi had a huge role in all teams where he played, so after he left it became clear for the world how important he was for his team, while when lewa left, bayern is still one of the best teams, so that's what matters. if he had won UCL or euro then he definitely would have won ballon, but bundesliga is not a major trophy as we all see how bayern wins it all the time, also no one saw lewi's contribution against big teams as we couldn't see that this year in barca, so scoring goals without getting anything valuable for your teams isn't enough while messi still won copa and had the most man of the match awards that year. and if ronaldo fans wanna say smth, like he was ghosted in the copa final, your idol has not even played euro final, didn't get any award of that tournament and you were mentioning this win as his own achievement while silva got mvp, but in da whole tournament messi was the dominant and got 3 awards there, so just accept reality.

Lewa did deserve it last year. But honestly, I think that this year, the fans are just with the sentiment that he is owed a Ballon D’Or. he was a no show for Poland in the euros. And you can only judge a player from what you see on the pitch. Messi had a stellar year which is kinda normal from his standards, he added a copa América which he completely dominated. I think the award going either way would have been fair and I also believe it outrageous to say Messi did not rightfully deserve it.

wdym no show for Poland in the euros, in 3 games there he still managed to score 3 goals, in a match vs Sweden he was quite literally playing alone, this argument that Lewandowski didn't do anything exceptional on euro 2020 is stupid for me 'cause he did, it's just Polish national team who sucks while Messi in Argentina has players like Dybala, Martinez, Di Maria etc.

for me, Lewy has been wayy too clear if we bring their consistency into question. messi has had god awful consistency since the copa, and even failed against big teams, where as Lewy put probably more numbers against big teams than smaller ones. AND FINALLY, considering messi has already won it 6 times, if they're so close, there would be absolutely nothing wrong in giving it to Lewy. that's just my opinion

At that time Messi played for a failing team and Lewandowski played for one of the best teams if not the best team in the world... do you even know what you're talking about? It's easy to be consistent when you're playing for a good team cause you're not dragging 10 other guys with you by the scruff of their necks. And the argument that Messi already has six so just give one to Lewa is the most brain dead thing I've ever heard. It's not a pity contest, why would you punish one guy for being a good player lol? Makes no sense.
