Whitney Houston - I Will Always Love You - ISOLATED VOCALS - Analysis and Tutorial
Whitney Houston’s version of “I Will Always Love You” ended up setting the bar for vocal greatness and has remained the standard that singers aspire to for nearly 3 decades.
What other songs can you think of that also share that similar notoriety? Let me know in the comments!
In this video we’ll dissect Whitney's vowel structures, the volume that she had and the velocity she used to come in and out of her singing.
We’ll also explore how she’s able to pull off her sound with such accurate pitch, intonation, tone, and vibrato.
If you singers want a template for how to get great at singing long, whole phrase, whole tone singing, this is the song.

I just want to talk about that breath she uses for the beginning of that climactic 3rd chorus: In that one breath, she goes in and out of vibrato, back and forth between her head and chesty-mix register, suspends and releases agility between straight notes and melisma, with power and perfect pitch, all while articulating each and every consonant with such emotion and control. And she hasn't even peaked yet in this chorus. She's not just a singer here, but actually more of an athlete. And what's helping her is that unlike "I Have Nothing" or "How Will I Know", this song sits so perfectly in her tessitura, that she's able to add such dynamism and flair to every note with such ease.

Actually ... this was recorded in 1 take through her microphone live on the set of the bodyguard movie. She didn't record it in a studio, so it was as raw as it gets. She could have perfected it in studio but when she was standing on the stage in that sparkling dress, she was also recording the greatest female solo of all time.

How Houston could support those lower range notes with a breathless force is beyond me. She was definitely a gospel based vocalist, and it shows. When she hit the power notes, they are so strong, but her soft notes are just as supported. She was an all around singer in all ranges and genres. She is missed.

@@kentamplin I love what you said about harmonic overtones...it comes from core chest and not from falsetto. Whitney knew how to retain her core and depth in her belts , That is why the squillo she could produce in her chest voice was just out of this world.. Some people thinking singing a note is the same, the quality and the harmonic overtones from the notes is what set her apart...she understood scuro -darkness and chiaro -brightness. Also, the vocal we here was recorded in one take..99 percent of it.. She was known to nailing her vocals in one take.....

I'm here for 25:22. For me, as an uneducated listener, her singing really is perfect because of the way she balances her astonishing technical ability with personality. I get quite bored by a lot of singers who are celebrated by technique. Whitney Houston is never boring, and it's because of her performance quality and not because hee songs are necessarily lyrically brilliant.

she was just an absolute master, breath control, intonation, all of it. The way she goes from soft and gentle to just blow your hair back power. Right up to those pure flute tones so to speak. And THAT KEY CHANGE!!! that is THE key change hahaha. The bar against which all other key changes are measure for sure. Soo good. I am not sure I agree that she "lost" control at the end. But its possible. Either way its as close to perfect as you can get. I think they went for a single take here. One contiguous phrase(as you said), and come on, from the top all the way down thru all the vocal changes back to that quiet from the start? Sounds more like she had a bit less breath than she thought so she pushed down on the diaphragm a bit to bolster up the tone. hehehe I think a tiny bobble is allowable :) :) :)

somethings cannot ever be learned. They are simply unattainable and unique to their origin. Whitney Houston's voice is one of those things. A mother's brand of love and the flight of birds. We can mimic them, but they will never deliver the same subtleties and impact as the originals.

The voice, that’s all you need to say. Whitney was truly awesome. I’ve heard some isolated tracks of Freddie, particularly Show Must Go On, which legend and Brian May tells it that after he told Freddie to rest cuz he didn’t think he could do another take, Freddie took a slug of Vodka or whiskey and said, “I’ll fucking do it darling.” He then nailed that song. Be cool to hear you break that down. Sorry for the language, but it works with the story.

Thank you from my heart Ken for this amazing analysis of Whitney‘s singing art ❣️Now I finally understand what experiencing with my voice mesns giving me tools - e.g. the slight change of the vowels. I never understood that before... plus can I add something what is vital for me, to realize that when there is a short vowel I need to sim at the next consonant like it was a double one .. this is gold for me❣️
