Unless you are a trained vocal coach, most people don’t know that Whitney sang technically perfect…yet effortlessly. The runs, the head voice vs. the chest voice. The ability to switch back and forth between them and never lose a note. A singer of this magnitude of technical excellence is one in a billion. Yet, she makes it look so easy. Truly astonishing talent has to be a God given gift. There’s no other explanation.

I was thinking the same thing. Whitney is great but: I am telling you belongs to Jennifer Holiday. Jennifer Hudson sings it well, too, and absolutely captures the heartbreak of the song. Whitney’s version was clean, in tune, and delivered amazingly. It was a little on the fast side. The song’s difficulty is also in its slow pace. Jennifer Holiday adds more nuances, her voice goes through a broader range of colors, and I’m sure Whitney was not going to try to imitate Jennifer Holiday on this night 🤣🤣 not when she’s got to get through several very challenging songs! (The Porgy and Bess arrangement was also melodically challenging.) But Whitney was so amazing. Her tone, breathtaking!

No entourage. No skimpy outfit. No back up dancers. No light show. No weird symbols. Just her matchless voice and an orchestra. 9 minutes. STRAIGHT. Three songs, each requiring such artistry that other singers would be happy to master ONE. She sings them all without missing a beat. Magical. No one like her before or since. People who don’t sing at a caliber that requires you to be this on center will never understand just how IN HER BAG she was this night. I’m Telling You is the best singers last song, Whitney put it in the middle of a set and then delivered one of her most captivating performances of I Have Nothing she ever did. There’s a point in the last half of that song where you see her face shift, like an athlete coming around the last curve of a 3200 meter race, the joy of enjoying that last stretch. You can see her enjoy her gift, enjoy the reaction to the mastery of her gift, the admiration and love, you see her drink it in and give it back. A truly beautiful moment.

I used to be a singer myself. Although I was never at her caliber, I understand completely. When you're a singer, there are some nights when everything just clicks. And there is no better feeling than flying high when you sing. Those moments remind you why you decided to become a singer in the first place and suddenly, it makes all the sacrifices worth it. And definitely, it was one of those nights for Whitney. I think this performance is one of her best and remind us why she became a legend in her own time. Whitney was not a singer : she was a goddess.

The Voice!...In 1994 Whitney was in her prime. She was a Stradivarius singer...Perfect tone, Power, Delivery, Song interpretation..and Elegance. I witnessed this woman 4 times in concert in 1987, 1991, 2 concerts in 1994..1 month before this iconic performance. In my opinion..the 1994 AMA medley is the greatest world class live performance of all time. Thank you for showing others how legendary and rare this woman's gift really was. She was a shooting star that was taken from this world far too soon. She left behind an unmatched musical legacy.
