Whitewall / White Letter Tire Cleaning (The Right Way!)

There are are a lot of ideas out there on what the best way is to clean whitewall & white letter tires. This is the simple & effective method that we've found works the best. All you need is some Blech-Wite, a stiff brush (we like a brass wire barbecue brush), and a water hose. It works great on all but the most stained, nasty old tires (as you'll see). Give it a shot for yourself and let us know how it goes! Think there's a better way? Feel free to chime in in the comments section.
The tire dressing we use is available here: secure.cougarp...

Bleche White has always been the bomb for white wall tires and I never had any issues with it. Spray it on and yellowy stuff starts coming of and a quick brush and rinse and your done. I never had to use metal wire brushes just nylon nail brushes work just fine.

Back in the 80s and 90s, Westley's Bleche White was incredible at cleaning white walls and raised white letters. But they got bought out and changed their recipe and I do not think they have ever been the same. The white walls on my Lincoln are forever tan colored. No matter how many repeated applications or how hard I scrub with a scrub brush, I can not get my white walls anywhere close to white.

Use a stiff nylon brush not a metal wire brush, that's much to aggressive. I have seen the white get scratched and eventually holds more dirt and grime.

  • @donrush5690

Incorrect. A fine brass bristle bristle brush is perfect and no matter how aggressive you are will never scratch the tire. Nylon will not do the trick on heavily stained white walls. At any one time over the last 30 years I own about ten sets of white walls or white letters, I have done this literally thousands of times.

+Don Rush stiff nylon brushes work fantastic and minimize and damage. Suppose that there was a real nice beauty ring or painted wheel and the brush hit it by accident. Which material would you want then if it was your vehicle?? Yeah that's what I thought. The chemical cleaner needs to do 95% of the work not the brush!

I have always used a nylon brush and got great results. I also never let my white walls get very soiled. For me, it was always safer to use a brush that would not scratch the rims or beauty rings.

I have always used a cheap bug scrubber and Wesley's Bleche-Wite. Also used Ajax or Comet and a scrubber. If my white letters are super dingy, I use 600 grit sand paper on a sanding block and lightly wet sand them til white. And I agree with Ozzstar, nylon brush, not wire!

I have done that as well but it only works on raised white walls and as you know many are recessed and less than a halve inch wide. I think I will on my next video I will put a car on a lift with it running, in gear and see if the tire gets scratched at 1500 rpm using a brass bristle brush and Bleche White.

I use a product called Wide White from Coker on my Galaxie's Wide Ovals. Bleach will do herm to reproduction tires. They are not of the same quality of the originals. Also never use a tire dressing that's petroleum based, and silicon based on Coker tires as they will bleed the black into the white rubber, and it will be a nightmare to clean up.

I used a similar method forever since the 60's and always worked well. A few years ago I purchased some new bfg for the Cougar. They were impossible to get bright white and would yellow almost overnight even without tire dressing. After a year of aggravation I went back to the tire shop Discount Tire. They replaced them no charge. Now less than a year later its starting again (yellowing overnight) it's time for round three at the shop. If I can't get them replaced I will flip them to blackwall out. I'll miss the letters but hate the yellowing. Any suggestions?

Solid “old school” way to clean those whites. But……I was always a huge believer in the product you use….back in the 70’s and 80’s…..then it changed. I never had to do 2x or 3x with that stuff…and the white was brilliant!..its not the same product anymore. So, what do I do now? I have OWL tires. I got a bottle of cleaner from the high end car wash detail center I go to….they gave it to me for free. I simply pour some on a terry cloth towel (old bath towels) and wipe each letter one or two times……wipe on, wipe off. They are brilliant white once again. No water, no brushes, almost no effort at all. Like you, I don’t like the greasy wet tire look…..I either leave the tires with no dressing, or…..go to your big box hardware store and get the cheapest spray cans of pledge you can find. Usually like $2 a can. Spray that on….gives a clean very soft look. You can layer the stuff on if you want reflections from your rubber! Anyway, like you…watched 50 videos of “wrong” until I found yours. I also have heard, but not tried sos pad or the Mr Clean Magic Eraser work easily as well. Though the sos pad would require rinsing. On your tires, the raised white letters RWL were white….the whitewalls were not. Not even close. Great video!!

That horrible tire shine stuff car washes use causes black streaks on the white walls and is Really Hard to remove. I use Blech Wite [however it's spelled]; didn't notice the company name change, seems to work the same. I use it on the wheels as well. Can't see how it can hurt if it's washed away in a minute or two and it's as effective as any other wheel cleaner I have tried.
