Paul Kennedy But the fundamental question is what do these laws do? In the sense of what much of this video argues in terms of speech acts. Sure the white person cannot marry a PoC, but within a broader legal context of oppression of non-whites the laws serve to reinforce the idea that non-whites are not deserving of marriage to whites. Moreover, given that the arguments for anti-miscegenation laws were often explicitly about racial purity, the purpose of the laws are quite clear.

Avram Reisman: Yes, I agree that that has been the basis for the laws. However, the laws would only be "necessary" if there are whites who don't agree and want to marry a non-white person. In that case, the law violates the rights of the white person and the non-white person, and that is necessarily the case. So, to answer our question "what do these laws do?" They violate the rights of both individuals.

A law banning interracial relationships does infringe on the rights of everyone, but the consequences of such a law isn't shared equally. America used to have laws against interracial relationships, so we already know how such a law would be enforced. And history shows us that it was worse for PoC than it was for white folks. If a black man and a white women were caught together, the black man would be killed and the white women would be ostracized. Both people suffered, but one clearly was punished more than the other.

@The Big Bad White Man Nothing you said in that comment is true, so I'm not really sure how to respond. I mean, no, there *is* greater genetic variation in Africa than anywhere else in the world. Not because of Africa's varied climates, but because human beings first evolved in Africa, and our species lived there for most of our history. So Africa contains the majority of our evolutionary development. And, yes, there is as much variation between two given Africans as between a European and an African. Or any other people on Earth. Racial categories are based on recently evolved, superficial traits. They are politically expedient (it's easy to tell that a group of people come from far away and have different customs when they look different), but they don't have a deep genetic basis. And even if you just want to categorize humans based solely on appearance, human phenotypic variations are so gradual and diverse across the globe that an objective taxonomy based on appearance is essentially useless. Races exist as political categories that vary from culture to culture. A culture's racial definitions can be politically expedient *for that specific culture*, but they don't really have a wider, objective meaning. There will never be a single set of "races" that all humans can agree on.

Wolf Stone You could say the Arab nations owe reparations to slaves. That is...just not true. They were not all impoverished before the discovery of oil by any means. It created an explosion of wealth for a few countries far beyond what they had before, but the Ottoman Empire for instance was a mighty force with lots of wealth going around long before the discovery of oil. As were the other caliphates that proceeded it. I mean could I not ask why the European world was mostly impoverished before colonialism? @@bunjier4041 So I got to thinking about it and at first I was considering that maybe using the word cuck as an insult is rude because you shouldn't make fun of somebody on account of their fetish even if you don't get it, but then I also kind of thought that maybe a cuckold would be into the part where it's an insult? Kind of an interesting thing to think about, it's probably more of a personal thing and as a rule it's not ideal to use something like that pejoratively, but it is an oddball circumstance of language and culture. Anyway I did Google up 'wagecuck' And there's a pretty raucous collection of very earnest cartoons depicting folks Fight Clubbing real hard which is hilarious for a wide variety of ironic reasons that I won't really get into here, and also directed me to an amazing Reddit post about a kid who called in to a radio station impersonating a school district superintendent to get exams rescheduled on account of a light dusting of snow which was very funny and I enjoyed quite a bit.

This video articulates something I've been wrestling with intellectually for a long time, so thank you for that, Olly. I have been thinking lately about whether speech can be violent in and of itself, even if the content of the speech is not a direct threat of violence. My worry is that White Supremacists are incredibly good at strategically framing their ideas. If you do not protest them, they are supported by the universities and talk shows who will provide them a platform. If you do protest them, then you and your protest group are mocked in the media and labelled opponents of free speech. If you do not argue against them, they get to spread their misinformation. If you do argue against them, you implicitly grant them legitimacy by demonstrating that their ideology is "just another political issue." I think that we need to start thinking more strategically about how we discuss, engage with, and frame White Supremacy. I do not know what the best strategy is.

About the Irish stuff, I just found out it exists, the thing I don't understand is that, even if it were correct, why does it matter? What argument are you gonna make? "Well, they were also enslaved, SEE SLAVERY WAS NOT RACIST IT ALSO INCLUDED PEOPLE THAT WE NOW CONSIDER WHITE"? "Yeah, black people were opressed, bue how about we talk about the Irish?" It's like when people say: it wasn't 6M deaths in the Holocaust, it was about a half/third/thenth...the number is not the important part, it's that it was systematic ethic cleansing. Even if it's 2 orders of magnitude off it shouldn't change how you see it.

The "white slavery myth" isn't even a white nationalist talking point. Though muslims did take many white slaves from Europe. The irish had it as bad if not worse than the American slaves, reducing the argument down to the fact that the Africans were legally slaves is rediculous.

The same way saying "there were less than 6M killed in the Holocaust" does not make me go "oh then the Nazis weren't that bad, 6M is something, but if you only killed 600 000 people, then you ain't as bad"

If the number didn't matter they wouldn't have exaggerated it. There's been many more genocides throughout history that most people haven't heard of because of the spotlight put on the jewish one. Would you call the systematic replacement of Europeans with non-Europeans a genocide? If the number doesn't matter then you shouldn't have any problem recognising that the goal and results will be the same. It's too insidious for people to recognise but in time it will have successfully destroyed our national identities. If you have no problem with that I see no reason for you calling the jewish genocide that, might as well just be another mass murder.

  • @alexsere3061

    @alexsere3061

    4 жыл бұрын

@@GordonGarvey no, the "white genocide" it's not a genocide, and the methods do matter, if fact it's what matters the most TO ME. The holocaust is not the same as your "white genocide" primarily because one of them had concentration camps and systematic killings, while the other happens because people are not prejuditials and have children (which is the opposite of murder). The number is important, I agree, but sometimes an atrocity is so hideous that even if it happened to 1% of the people I (this is a personal opinion) wouldn't be less outraged by it. This is a personal opinion, of course. If I killed your whole family, and then told you "actually, I just killed your parents and siblings" would your level of anger drop significantly? Or would it stay the same? My would stay roughly the same, but, once again, this is subjective.

Hello, I'd like to know about your opinion on something a bit different but related to this. You said that context and tone communicates different meanings to words and sentences even if there underlying meaning is harmless. On that note, why do we censor words as something supposedly harmful to use? And if tone and context is of such importance, then I can use the both context and tone to use an 'accepted' word as some form of insult. Do we shut down all words then? For example, I read that the word tranny is offensive, but even, by using context and tone, I can use the accepted word 'transgender' to communicate insult or offense. On the contrary, I can also use context and tone to use the word 'tranny' in a completely harmless way to communicate what it actually means, 'transgender'. So, what's the use of erasing words if context and tone matters, context and tone being personal and easily changeable, and capable of putting different meaning in accepted/un-accepted words?

I really enjoyed how you broke this down, and agree with almost everything said. However, the more common myth in America about the Irish immigrants tends to be that "they were worth less than a slave" socially speaking. This idea comes predominantly from the first railroads and canals in America, where they preferred to hire the Irish sometimes paying in whiskey alone, for blasting away stone with black powder (pre TNT). It was true that some of the Jobs were so deadly that slaves were not enlisted due to their (sick to say) "monetary value as a renewable resource/labor". Where as they could spend another dollar on an Irish teenager to go set powder charges for 2 bottles of booze (one for them to drink and one to barter or sell). So while that has nothing close to do with being enslaved- it does also show how the "Titans of Industry", felt about human life vs capital.

I live in Seattle and the Proud Boys, 3%ers and Oathkeeps were recently in town hosting a "Free Speech" rally and I was part of the counter-protest. A couple Oathkeepers were acting as "security" and when confronted about what they were doing there they responded "we are here defending free speech." The person standing next to me asked "if we needed you to defend a black lives matter protest would you do that." They immediately responded "no" and it became painfully clear to me that they had no interest in "free speech."

The issue with punching nazis and why there is backlash from those that aren’t nazis or even are left wing is that it adds fuel to the “left is out to get us” bit and encourages them to go out in crowds. This turns each occurrence of a pinch into a larger and larger brawl without much of a way to stop until one side backs down, and the nazis aren’t gonna be that side. It’s not much of a matter of if it’s right or not, it’s a matter of what the consequences will be and I didn’t see these consequences make an appearance in this video.

Thanks for the great videos, Olly! I'm still a little fuzzy on a couple points from this video. 1. What does a particular act of speech do? I understood your example about the stalker sending messages, but in your university guest speaker example I couldn't quite pick up on what act the speaker's speech would be performing. That situation is one that seems to be referenced frequently, so I want to understand it better. Could you clarify a little? 2. If the way to engage with White supremacist propaganda is not dialogue, but violence, isn't that inflicting violence to stop violence? Perhaps violence towards White supremacists (a punch in the face) is categorically different from the violence White supremacist ideology leads to (genocide) because of its scope and motivation? But something about the means and ends seems muddled in my mind. Thanks again for your time and energy on this channel! :)

Hey Olly I know that there is a lot of fighting in the comments and it's getting really heated in some of the debates. But don't let this discourage you from making "controversial" videos. People are arguing because you are talking about something that matters (not saying that normally you don't say things that matter, I love all of your videos). Whenever something important is said it will be met with resistance and fighting, but that only means that it needed to be said, even if it sucks to have to be the person to say it because it opens you up to be attacked, and creates fights around you.

Love the video per usual! Before things get to fussy in here, I'd like to knit-pick something you said towards the beginning about how you say things using the phrase 'I love you'. I believe you said that even when you say the phrase different ways the meaning stays the same. However, if I say the phrase 'I love you' sounding like I can't believe I love you then I don't think the meaning is the same as if I say it sincerely. Thinking of the phrase "It's not what you say, but how you say it".

Very good points about what speech DOES in addition to what is SAYS. Thanks for that. I've been doing a good deal of reading and work on semiotics and philosophy of language in the past several months, and might suggest people check out the following: *J.L. Austin, "How to Do Things with Words"* is a seminal and very readable foundational essay precisely about how speech DOES things besides contain content. *Roland Barthes, "Myth Today"* is a hugely relevant essay analyzing semiotic myth, how ideological forces co-opt signs and impoverish them of their original meanings in an appropriation that renders them oblique and "innocent" (my paradigmatic example is #AllLivesMatter, which appropriates #BlackLivesMatter for ideological ends, but can escape criticism by appearing innocent...). *Nell Irvin Painter, "The History of White People"* is an intellectual history of the concept of "whiteness" in Europe and especially the United States. A *super* interesting and eminently readable tour de force demonstrating the fragility of racial ideologies by looking at how even who has counted as "white" has fluctuated and inflated over time and space. I've done several video essays exploring the semiotic concepts mentioned above in the context of recent political and cultural phenomena. If people are curious to learn more about how language functions in these sorts of hard-to-nail-down ways, Austin's and Barthes' work should be helpful!

What the hell do you mean “All of the so called white homelands even in Europe were in large part built by wealth stolen from people who weren’t white”???? What about Ireland, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Moldova, Ukraine and Belarus. None of these countries ever had any colonies (or had very tiny ones that produced pretty much no wealth and were then abandoned) And what about other countries that had small colonies but were already wealthy without them and they didnt gain much from them like Italy and Germany? Edit: I make this comment because Im from Romania and youre basically accusing mine and all those other countries mentioned apart from Italy and Germany of perpetrating slavery and stealing natural resources from other continents.

The exception clause in the 13th amendment allowed slavery to continue as punishment for crime, even crimes like loitering, and debts, freed African American slaves could become the property of their previous slave owners all over again as a punishment and could be whipped and chained and have their punishments lengthened for arbitrary reasons… even if it wasn’t as bad as chattel slavery because their children would be free, it was still really messed up, and I think their descendants are owed reparations In Ireland and Scotland simply speaking Gaelic or wearing the tartan was a crime punishable with the same punishment of forced labor in America, it was a way to erase their culture, families were broken apart, it was awful… even if it wasn’t as bad as chattel slavery because their children would be free, it was still really messed up, and I think their descendants are owed reparations You pointed out that some people could obtain land but sharecropping usually didn’t work out that way, Sharecropping was bad because it increased the amount of debt that poor people owed the plantation owners. Sharecropping was similar to slavery because after a while, the sharecroppers owed so much money to the plantation owners they had to give them all of the money they made, it wasn’t as bad as chattel slavery, but I feel like comparing everything to chattel slavery misses the point
