A Star is Born was remade a million times & surprisingly worked each time! That’s extremely rare! I enjoyed the Wiz as well, which is technically a remake. Dracula with Gary Oldman was good, just to add to a previous post. But 90% of remakes usually aren’t worth the time & money it was used for.

That element would've worked today if it was Asian Men Can't Jump. I'd watch that. Or a proper sequel to give closure to the original characters. To me White Men Can't Jump (1992) had an open ending.

  • @ChefDeli87

This is the perfect take. Asian men can't jump would be more interesting with where we are as a society today, and current basketball culture. Actually there was a movie called Boogie that came out a few years ago with Pop Smoke that kind of felt like that. That movie was wayyy better than this remake

Asian men can jump! Give me Jeremy Lin's height and my skills I think I would've made it also. He's too soft as a person that's why he got pushed out the NBA. Anyways y'all probably don't hoop so y'all don't know any better. It's all good tho, now y'all know What I'm trying to say is that there are a lot of Asian hoopers. Y'all just gotta go out there and see for yourself

@@cheasok9768 relax yung'un. I do hoop and I'm also a filmmaker. If you knew the premise of the film it's based on hustling using people's prejudices. In the 80s the Celtic brand led to overall assumptions that White Men Can't Jump comparable to Jordan vs Bird skill set. We KNOW White Men CAN Jump now. Soooooo (inhale) a film better suited to that prejudice in today's context would be playing on the idea that Asian Men Can't Jump. Don't you think it would be funnier having a Justin Lin type playing Billy Ho than that goofy Jack Harlow? The jokes write themselves. Imagine if Ronny Chieng could ball? Surprised you didn't use the obvious GOAT, Hall of Famer Yao Ming, as your example, respectfully.

Damn! This review was brutally honest The only remake that comes to mind, is 2017’s It chapter 1. I agree that the remakes & sequels are played out, though I understand why Hollywood is doing it. They’re afraid of new ideas cause they might flop. Now that I think about it… the first F&F was basically a remake of Point Break and that was great. Remakes could work, but the writing needs to be way better or at least on par with the original.

My favorite remakes of the last two decades are IT, True Grit, Planet of the Apes trilogy, Dune and Godzilla (the MonsterVerse). Other than what it takes to make a good film in any situation, I think the key to a good remake is the genre. Science fiction and fantasy are good genres for remakes, due to the variety and fluidity. Comedy though, is a tough genre for remakes or sequels because it is so subjective.

Great review Tony. Keep 'em coming! This remake seems to have been written by a 13 y. o. who never saw the original but was told the story of it by his older brother. That's the only reason I can explain the flamethrower. Why did they move all the action inside? What was wrong with 3on3 on open courts? The actual b-ball action sucked. Characters were tame & flat. It sucked so much not even the waters of lake Minnetonka can purify it. Original is a gem.

Man this was one of the best breakdowns I seen on movie reviews but the continue I don't know if you consider it a remake but IT was a good movie how it allows the characters to grow and continue

This wasn’t bad honestly. It was a chill movie. They had a cool modern take on what the game is like today and people trying to get into the league and the KZreadrs.

This movie sucked the acting was terrible that tried way too hard to make it a modern day film. Good thing it was on hulu if they put this BS in theaters it would have fucking flopped lol.

I like the original, and the 2023 one on their own respective merits. It's really not as bad as the negative comments suggest

Also, remake that worked, Spenser for Hire. Took me a second to get into Hawk, as a character but once it developed I could start to get into it. The new Spenser, I feel, could have used a little taming and I think we basically got to see what Mark would be like as a Spenser more than the role of Spenser but the movie worked

Another fun and honest review! Good remakes in my opinion is; It Chapter 1, John Carpenter’s The Thing, The Mummy, Scarface, Dredd, The Departed (Which is a remake of a Hong Kong film called Internal Affairs). The movies that deserves a remake are movies that are terrible or a foreign or old films that would make sense or would be interesting to have a modern day adaptation or a twist on the original.

First two remakes that come to mind: Martin Scorsese's CAPE FEAR THE BIRDCAGE with Robin Williams (I haven't seen the original French film, though.)

You're spot on in your review. 3:10 to Yuma was a good remake, but the original was 50 years prior, so it worked, like you said.

I think most of the good remakes were way back in the day. Movies like Scarface, Ben-Hur, A Star is Born (although the newest remake was good as well). Another two newer good remakes were The Jungle Book (2016) and Nightmare Alley imo. Edit: Also do the James Bond movies count?

The Best Man archive was definitely one of the best ever. They kept all the original characters when they did the series (expect Mya). And the series was amazing. I felt all type of emotions. And it ended well. Gaves us closure uk?

The Blob, Thing and the Fly are my fav remakes of all time. Even though they were made in 80s, it's about the same amount time between their releases & their originals in the 50s. Also, the Dredd remake was far better than what we got in the 90s.

Tony Baker, I agree Hollywood needs to stop doing remakes. But this White Men Can't Jump remake is super saiyan solid, it's not the greatest and isn't terrible. Kamal & Jeremy is way different from Sidney & Billy.
