The abv would drop below 40% abv, so by current regulations they wouldnt be able to sell it as a whisky anymore.

@@CeRockTV What controls ABV? Sometimes I'll see 30+ year old cask strength bottles with 70's or 80's distillate that's over 50%, which seems quite high for that age, while other cask strengths come in at low-mid-40%. Is it random how fast the ABV drops or is there some science behind it?

@@whitebuffalo4904 its both. Science part: alcohol evaporates faster than water in cool climates like scotland. Therefore the proof will always be decreasing. Also, as horst mentioned, casks get leaky over time as they dry out due to the liquid level dropping. Random part: every cask is different. Different area of the warehouse means different temperature, different air movement around the cask, different oak staves, different quality of construction in terms of watertightness, and the list goes on and on. Moreover, when casks get this old, sometimes they will be combined together to continue aging so that the level doesn't get too low and completely evaporate. So rule of thumb is 1-2% a year but that could easily be only 0.25% the first year when the barrel if full and 5% in year 50 when its almost empty.

This was a great review. I appreciate that I'll likely never get to taste a 50 year old Glenfarclas, and I am really curious about the older highly appreciated Scotch, so this lets me understand what it would be like. Thanks.

Prices have increased since 2016. You will have to pay more than 3000 euros for such a bottle now.

And Glenfarcles is certainly one of the cheapest brands of very old Whiskys. A 50 year old Glenfarclas costs €3,000 but a 50 year old Glenfiddich costs 4 to 5 times as much.

Very nice review. Obviously it's very expensive and exclusive bottle, but very much cheaper near the other 50 Y bottles.

why not do the nose after the tasting?

My father had a whiskey taste thing at his office. He brought home a bottle from 1961 with enough left for 1 full whiskey glass. I was shocked when I saw the online price of €3500

Horst isnt blown away here, he has much better sentiments for some much cheaper bottles

does anybody use parafilm to preserve these kind of expensive whiskies for investment/ longer period of time? And..how can you stare at this bottle for 10+ years and resist to uncork the bottle? *plop

Its to expensive to open... Few months before he opened glenfiddich 40 for 7-8k $ 🤣 and now he is broken 🤦🏻‍♂️😮

And they have absolutely 0 marketing. All word to mouth. So they dont sell alot like other distilleries

+wesleytaylorviadomus I wouldnt recommend it for this price (100 dollars, really?). The 17 year old is only about 60 € in germany. The 12 year old is really a entry level bottling. Some say, Glenfarclas starts with the 15 year old (about 50€ here).

15 is amazing value. 21 good too.

I refuse to pay more than $80 for a bottle of whiskey, ever. And even then, I rarely pay more than $40. But I'm not trying to be a hater; If you can afford a bottle of this and still pay the mortgage, then good for you!

+paris france I dont know for sure. He has tasted some Glen Grants and Strathislas which were about 50 years as well (from the 1950s, 1960s) for example.

I wonder how much he knocks back each day?

Seems to me that if you buy whisky with no intention of opening/drinking it...you're just paying for a glass bottle and a label. $4000 is a lot for a bottle.

I know it's a bit late but you can buy a 50mL bottle of 40 yr for £60 on thewhiskyexchange.com if you really want to try it without killing your bank account.

I found the 15 to be better than the 21

last I seen this bottle is now at £7500

Also, bigger casks give less taste. It is all about how much of the total volume is touching the cask. Increasing the cask size, increases the area increases linearly, whilst the volume is increasing exponentially. So there would be less cm^2 of "touching" per liter
