I'm going to be that guy. The color and flavor of whiskey don't have the relationship you described. It is everything to do with the presence and influence of the cask its aged in. Many heavy, peaty, Islay scotches like Laphroaig and Ardbeg are quite light in color. Usually scotch whiskey is lighter than bourbon seeing as though bourbon is aged in brand new casks with a fresh char and scotch is typically used in refill casks.

+Joe Hahn also there's no regulation against using caramel colouring in scotch whisky other than having to list its inclusion on the box in certain regions.

GIANT ANGRY ROBOT correct, but the inclusion of Carmel coloring will be used to darken whisk(e)y. Not lighten the color

Also in hotter climates, the whisk(e)y is absorbed much more into the wood casks, leading to a darker finish

While I love a good single malt I recently enjoyed a superb blended Japanese whiskey- Hibiki 12 year a friend brought back from a trip to Japan. The faceted bottle is to die for.

A thing I like about Straight Bourbon is that no colour can be added, but in a scotch for example, added caramel colouring should not affect the taste. Anyhow, good video guys!

What do you think about adding some water before tasting?

  • @gentslounge

I think you should at least taste the whiskey before adding water to it. Adding water is not a bad thing it just brings out the more subtle flavors of the whiskey. -GL

The Green Spot, BEST WHISKEY EVER. It's an Irish whiskey that I was turned on to by a man from Ireland. Aged 5yrs in white wine barrels. Has some notes of green apples caramel and some wheaty/bready kind of notes too. They have a Yellow Spot that's 8yrs aged in red wine barrels. If you ever get a chance to have a glass DON'T PASS IT UP.

+Gent's Lounge if you're drinking whiskey it should be a good-sized sip. I am referring to the amount of time that you held it in your mouth, you shot it down very quickly cheap liquor. It's something expensive and worthy of being savored, and tasted properly. It would be nice to see you do that in future whiskey tasting videos.

It's against the law for American whiskeydistillers to artificially color their whiskey. The color is 100% from the new charred white oak barrels they use to age their whiskey.

Gent's Lounge... American whiskey makers can color blended whiskies only. For consistent color purpose. However if they use artificial coloring they by law have to print it in the bottle. And i have never seen that printed on a jd. Bottle.

Tennessee whiskey is filtered through charcoal giving it a dark appearance

  • @wildernessman760

Anthony Humphries The JD sugar maple filtering doesn't change the color of the whiskey at all. It goes in clear. And comes out the other side clear. All the charcoal filtering does is remove impurities that make Unwanted flavors in their whiskey.
