"Whiskey In The Jar" is a Traditional Irish song that has been covered hundreds of times, most notably by Thin Lizzy, Metallica, and The Dubliners. As far as we can tell "mush-a-rain-dum-a-doo-dum-a-dah" is the most fun lyric we've ever gotten to sing in the history of ever. Thanks for watching!

This is probably the most unique cover that I’ve heard from Voiceplay. I had not even heard of this song before, so after my first listen to this I went as listened to three other versions. This version uses the Thin Lizzy and Metallica versions as the lyrical base, but the vocals and the melody are a thing of their own. Eli, Omar, and Cesar sound so good individually and together. Geoff’s solo and baseline make for an amazing contrast to the tenors. And of course Layne’s stellar vocal percussion serve as the backdrop to all of it.

I did a Google search & from what I can tell is that the lyrical base of this song was actually done by a group called Sweet Pea. They wrote the song & I believe they were the first to record it. Their recording is super slow so I had to speed it up a notch.

I know it’s unfair to say, but Pentatonic is really only relevant during Christmas time. They were the first group I discovered and fell in love with a cappella arrangements. Home Free caught my interest next, but it feels like lately, they’re running out of material and reusing their older stuff. Voiceplay continues to evolve into new sounds and feels like a cinematic masterpiece in every video. From Broadway, to Disney, to Pop, Country, Rock, and all the in betweens, Voiceplay is superior in the trio of KZread a capella artists. I love all 3 groups, and I do not wish to compare them, but Voiceplay is my favorite for their uniqueness.

My only gripe with Voctave is that I wish they would do some more serious music, rather than mostly all Disney junk (to me), which gets SOOO tiresome. Maybe because I used to work there and heard their other incarnation, Voices of Liberty, there not infrequently...where that made sense. They were spectacular live from the overhead rotunda. Their soprano...OMG. And I sang in a choir with one of their highly influential members...and he was so much fun to sing beside, or in front of. Talk about a voice! Brian (or Bryan, don't remember) is who I am speaking of. He even took over interim direction a few times, which was also a gas. He did "I Wonder as I Wander" a Capella once as an antiphonal solo from the rear raised balcony during one of our Christmas presentations, and when he finished there was dead silence for about three seconds, before the director said, "Brian Harden ladies and gentleman". And yes, there are definitely aspects to Voctave that I've heard from nobody else. :-) @@thisismetoday7423

@@MrJdsenior That is so interesting!! I agree I wish they would branch out to more than Disney, showtunes and holiday. I really loved their Great Movie Medley. All the people they've featured over the past few months - Omar, Ashley, our boy J.None, Anthony Gargiula - fit with VoicePlay like a key in a lock and sound like they come straight from heaven. Because so many are wondering There's not an original singer known for this one. It's an Irish folk song from the 17th or 18th century. We don't know bands from this time. Then The Dubliners brang it on before Thin Lizzy did it in a more melodic way (1972). Metallica did it 1998.🔥 Some others did it too, like Roger Whittaker, Gary Moore, Grateful Dead, The Pogues, Bryan Adams, Pulp, Smokie, Rednex, Paddy Goes to Holyhead, Fiddlers Green, Santiano, Valetti and VoicePlay (2023) 😁 My favorite is Metallica's, but there are good chances tomorrow I'll have 2 favorite cover versions if VP makes it melodic too.

@@huldradracoWhat impresses me most, is not even how low it is, but how rough, punchy and smooth the low note is!!!🤯🤯🤯🤯 That's what I was talking about: Geoff's voice always conquers our own expectations!!! Especially for haters who think he can't sing that low, and then, he casually takes off their head.😉 (It's just a joke)

I will admit, I had to listen to this piece several times before it grew on me. I’d never heard it before so I had nothing to compare it to. I think it’s best said like this, when Voiceplay creates covers of music I’ve never heard before I’m learning to broaden my horizons and add more variety of music to my mental music library. Thank you for this experience because in my research I learned more about the history of this song, as well as some new bands to listen to.

@@marshayoung9387 I wouldn’t go so far to say they lowered the bar, it was just something different. When the piece really gets going those are the parts I love. They still held the bar high (in my opinion) because the melody has been stuck in my head for a few days lol.

Straight up did not know this song. Been on a VP deep dive catching up on some songs I missed out on this year. This is phenomenal! I didnt really get it on the first listen so I went back and listened to some earlier versions including Thin Lizzy and Metallica. I then came back and it was like a lightbulb switched. So I would suggest listening to other versions if it dosent click the first time to get familiar with the song. Voiceplay continues to amaze me! The song choices are always spot on. I cant get enough!

Geoff - Your transitions to and from subharmonics are otherworldly! Eli - 3:13 That entire line felt so beautifully, flawlessly effortless! Cesar - Your ability to timbre-match your co-vocalists is equal parts inspirational and transcendental! Layne - Proving again that even a "simple" rhythm can hold so much depth and subtlety! Omar - "Killin' It" is an understatement! Your range, control and consistency are stellar! You guys always make me come up short on words. The music you make is beautiful. It wasn't till you all put this out on Patreon that i even knew there was a Thin Lizzy or Metallica version. I only know the trad Irish folk version, though I've heard many, many different takes on that. This version takes it from the rollicking, good-time drinking song to the "cry into your jar of whiskey" drinking song. Which is probably more appropriate given the lyrics. Have to say lads I'm loving this foray into the trad folk world with Drunken Sailor and now this. Would love to hear more.
