For those with a stuck tub, I used a bottle jack, cut a couple boards to fit under the lip of the washer then placed bottle jack on top of shaft and raised until it was pressing against the boards thereby lifting the tub away from the shaft. Also for those without a spanner wrench (if yours needs it, use a hole punch or chisel and tap the nut counterclockwise with a hammer. This video was pure gold! Couldn't have completed the gear case change on my wtw5500xw1 without it!

Great step by step directions! IMPORTANT CAUTION TO THOSE PERFORMING REPLACEMENT. I followed the instructions and it worked perfectly, until the Fast Spin Cycle. Sounded like it was spinning too fast. I was wrong. Spent a lot of time trying different things. Came to conclude it was an alignment issue with the Hub fasteners and the Gear-case bolts. The hub fasteners are accessed from inside the wash tub. (Top side) Whereas the Gear-case bolts to the housing under the machine. (underneath) The first time, I bolted these down separately, not thinking of the slight alignment condition which ensured. The second time (after the noise in the fast spin mode) I loosened both the gear -case bolts and the hub fasteners screws. (Loosened, not removed) I then moved the gear-case around a bit to re-seat the rubber washer inside of the bottom of the tub. I then tightened the gear-case bolts a bit. (Not fully tight.) I then flipped the unit back up, and secured the previously loosened hub screws and set the horse shoe fastener. The I flipped the unit back over again to fully tighten the gear-case bolts. IT WORKED! No loner sounds like a jet plane taking off when in Fast Spin cycle. Hope this helps others. It worked for me.

To those having a ton of trouble getting the tub off the shaft, don't give up. I had to use a 2x4 and a bottle jack. I even had to put the bolt back in the shaft because the jack bottomed out on the tub before it came free from the shaft. There are videos of how to perform this task right here on KZread. To the person who made this video, thank you so much. You saved me a ton of money.

Yup, I used my car jack and a 2x4. I also had the issue of the jack bottoming out so I placed a 13/16 socket on top of the shaft and balanced the jack on the socket and it finally came all the way loose. "It's a really easy job", yeah right 😒🤥

Just did this a few days, and it was greatly appreciated. after 10 years, i took all the parts outside and powerwashed all the slime and crude off the drum, the plastics and hub. no amount of "Cleaner" cycles were removing that. getting the spline out of the hub took some work due to the build up of crud and a little rust.

Thanks for the video, it was helpful. A couple of comments. One, I have had to replace the gearcase twice. The washer is only 8 years old, but it is clear that the gearcase design has some problems. Secondly, removing the inner tub can be a problem. As you suggested, I used some penetrant, but it still wouldn't come out. There is a KZread video that shows a method using a 2x4 and a car jack to get the inner tub out. I know, sounds pretty sketchy, but it worked.

I took off the drive belt and ran the test again and the motor is agitating and spinning as normal .I am thinking of changing the gearcase, but seeing that it is a very expensive part, I want to be sure that is the problem. Is there a way I can test to ensure that that is the culprit. Would appreciate any help. Thanks

I'm probably too late to help you, but I had a similar problem. I used this jack method as well. This method is described in another KZread video. My solution is hard to describe, but here goes. I put a long 5/8" socket over the shaft. I repositioned the jack and this gave me enough extra "throw" to get the tub off the shaft. You need about 3 hands. The jack sits on the socket and you have to hold the 2x4 and then turn the jackscrew.

If it sounds like an airplane taking off, chances it's your gearbox. Does your tub spin freely by hand or did it lock up? If it locked up, you can break it loose by hand and get a couple of months out of it before having to replace the gear box. It's certainly cheaper to do this as oppose to buying a new one!! Good luck!

I replaced mine without taking the tub off. I did have to loosen up the gearcase from the bottom and the stand the washer back up so gravity would help pull it down. Took handle of a hammer and just tapped it down. Laid it back on it's front and pulled the gearcase out. When putting it back it, the gearcase fit all the way in but the tub didn't slide all the way down so I did have to pop a few of the plastic tabs on the outer ring to loosen some tension and it just dropped all the way down. So yes, you can leave it there you will just have to work a little more at getting the case back out and in.
