While on holidays we lost our shop to a fire.

While we where heading home from Lone Star Roundup we got the call that our shop was on fire. Needless to say we where in Montana and there wasn't much we could do at the time.
For anyone who's asked for a way to help, our son has organized a GoFundMe. Here is the link: gofund.me/a4c66140

Derek, you and Brent are cut from the same cloth - just good honest great folks sharing their passion with the world and having a whole lot of fun along the way. Your moral support is worth gold bars and we all know Brent would do the same for you. Perhaps a VG family tour north and a wee colab fund raiser would be great to see...?
21 years ago, I sat on the curb one Sunday morning and watched the firefighters do what they do best, trying to save my home and workshop. Like you are doing now, I spun in circles for a few days, walking through the mess, picking up tools and stuff that had survived, all the while wondering "what now?". I had insurance, but on the moment, didn't know if they would come-through or not. So, I worked, I kept trying, kept looking for another place to start-over, kept all my options open. Within 4-5 weeks, I was paid by the insurance(I took a cash settlement), bought a new place, sold the old property to a friend just to get it out of my head, and started building a new shop. My friends and brothers came around and we had me back up and working in under a month. In a much nicer shop... Might not seem like it right now, but shit has a way of working itself out, buddy! You got this!

A fellow ex Manitoban here. I can’t believe i haven’t found your videos sooner. Honestly this is the second video I’ve seen of yours and I was hooked just after the first one. A tragedy it is to loose a shop. Especially one with a ton of memories and classics. But most importantly no one was hurt. I will definitely be watching more of your vids. I dated my now wife from Otterburne. We were at her apartment when the Canadian gas line exploded. Seeing your video brings that night back to mind. Stay strong and teach me more about old iron.
We are still taking in the news. What an awful thing to happen. My wife and I are both hands on people and have a real interest in all things mechanical. Here in the UK we live in the north Kent coast town of Herne Bay, and like a lot of people we do not have the space to have a huge workshop. However what we do have is very precious to us and we have tools and equipment we have had our entire life, some bought by us, but lots of things handed down that we could never replace. Yes we do buy new tools and equipment on occasions but we like nothing more than to refurbish something that has been pre-loved. Like you, we have so much stuff that is irreplaceable, the thought of loosing it all is unthinkable. We have only just found your YT channel recently (via Karl Fisher's channel) and have been watching you turn old iron into the Dodge. Already, you have given us - yes we both watch! - many hours of enjoyment and education. Your friendly demeanour and confident approach to the job in hand is inspiring. We wish you all the best for the future and hope our small donation to the fund will help you get back on your feet. If we could do more we would, but we live a little to far away to 'pop' over! All the best from Ralph and Sue Laughton, here in the UK.
People are invested in you, not just your shop. We viewers want you to do well beyond just watch you work on cars… So that being said, just document you getting the shop back together. People will help you along from your audience, I guarantee it. I’m so sorry this happened brother, but you’ve built a community now and I’m willing to bet that they’re going to be here for you.
Just a little bit for a new start from the other side of the pond.

So sorry Brent and Esther, I'm so happy your all okay !

Your way. The journey has just taken an unexpected twist. No doubts here that the pair of you will work your way out of this and continue to provide all your followers with what we are here for. And even though it's only 'stuff' you've lost, mourn it as you need to as you explore the new opportunities that this disaster will throw up. Good luck with it all!

My heart is broken. What an awful setback. When you are ready to rebuild we will all help get you back on track. This community won’t let you down sir.
Brent, my wife and I darn near cried when we saw this video. Just know that we are just two of over 136k people who are hurting for you and hoping along with you as you sort through this. I know your shop was a one-of-a-kind place that you built every time you walked through that door and it will be impossible to rebuild it back exactly as it was - but you now have the opportunity to build a NEW THING in the way that only you can build it. And THAT possibility alone has me kind of excited to see what you make of it as we watch you do your art and magic there.
My hart aches for you folks. Like you I have too many projects and not enough $$$$ or birthdays left to finish(almost 74). My shop is not insured and there are 8 cars in it plus a small apt upstairs. Just a small flood a few years ago took its toll. GOD Bless and we will keep watching. You are a very talented car nut! All the best from Alaska

Sorry for the loss Bro! 2 years ago my uncles 105' x 50' went up in flames from a spark cutting Titanium sheeting on the plasma table. Took 12 fire departments 9 hours the put it out. Complete loss of everything including a super car he was building for 8 years. Gordy's Race cars is out of business after 50 years of building IHRA and NHRA funny cars and dragsters with 7 Championship cars built in the facility..... He had ZERO insurance.
Oh my god Brent. So sorry to see this. I admit I teared up. I am sure your KZread fam will be with you 100%.
Something I notice right away is that when you're in the midst of a build you look at problems, how difficult they may be and literally laugh at the adversity and then work to a solution. You're no different today. As difficult as rebuilding your shop will be you still laugh. I love your positive attitude and outlook. I'll be watching to see how you overcome this setback, how you recover and how you save your current projects and start new ones. My heart goes out to you. Godspeed, Brent.

I'm a retired fire investigator, and have sat with many stunned guys trying to take it in and walked through ashes looking for a cause. Shop and garage fires were always hard for me, because they took me too close to what I'd feel if my shop burned. I feel for you, buddy. We can say "at least we're all safe" and "it's all just stuff", but fire loss leaves a big hole that takes a while to fill back in. For everyone else out there - please check your wiring and extension cords, and consider having a sub panel to shut off power to your shop when you're not there. Most fires turn out to be electrical, some from old wiring, more from crappy extension cords or hillbilly splicing, and a surprising number nowadays from rechargable battery stations or suspected battery shorting internally (it's often hard to tell for sure). The other sneaky fire starts are probably from smoldering dust bunnies that a grinding spark has gone into. When I leave for a few days, I put my rechargeable tools & batteries in a metal box and cut off power to my shop. Fires are a sucker-punch that no one should have to experience, it really sucks. Do what you can to prevent them. Sorry this happened to you, Brent, maybe this will open the chapter on the new improved shop that will lead to your best-ever work. Take care and God Bless.
No words, just so sorry to see this. I know it's not a lot but I hope that staying, watching, liking, I hope it all added up to help you recover. Your one of my favorite builders and I hope you can come back stronger. Either way I'll be here watching. I'm glad your all fine.

Hello Brent, I am fairly new to your program and am so sad for you about your shop burning, I am about your age and live in northern Alberta and would be devastated if my old shop build in 1943 would burn down, our original shop of 1929 was transferred to this one. You’re taking it way better than I would that’s for sure. I’ll stick around and see you get back on your feet and make the most out of it! Best wishes and the best of luck from Florida!
Concerning florescent bulbs & ballasts, I just upgraded mine with LED tubes. They fit into the existing florescent fixtures and have minimal wiring modifications. Remove the ballast (or leave it in with the wires cut) and wire-nut the exposed ends to the line in from your power source. Takes less than 5 minutes with the fixture on a work bench. I bought mine from Home-Depot.
Your positive ATTITUDE will bring you out the other side a WINNER! Remember, tough times never last, tough people always last.

But when I walk out the door and turn right my heart skips a beat to see my new shed. Megan and I won't stop watching yours and Esther's channels. Your an inspiration to some of the things I build. "It is what it is and we carry on"
I heard in my comments about your fire😮 So sorry your shop is lost.
Aw Brent, I am so sorry. Prayers for you and Ester. Our harts go out for y’all. As far as us in this house we are with you. You have taught and entertained us so we will continue to watch whatever. Pablo and the other dog are alright? God speed!
Far out Brent that really sucks man ,my heart sunk when i read the videos intro. I really loved watching your videos the last couple of years , your skills and work ethic are second to none and inspirational... Really admire your take it on the chin and life goes on attitude ,all the best for the rebuild.

Thank you so much :) Esther
I would like to add my support. I love the way you work and the final products you produce. I would like to ask that you continue to film the actions you take to recover from the fire - what you can salvage - what you can't - I also loved your 37 - best ever. Please rebuild if possible. Thank you again for everything.
I’ll be watching no matter what you build or were ,you always have such a great attitude and to see you sad is heartbreaking
This is one of my greatest fears and something that should never happen to anyone. I'm sorry for everything you lost and hope you can rebuild quickly!
