Toronto, Canada - 5:00 a.m. on Jan 1 2024, coming back from a NYE party in an Uber by myself (pretty turnt up lol). Asked the Uber driver to play me a song he liked. He was a bit hesitant at first (his english wasn't strong) but he played me a east african pop song. I didn't' understand the lyrics or anything but I thought it was interesting and I asked him to tell me what it was about. He said for being nice and patient, I could play whatever song i wanted. Out of all the songs I could play, I picked this one. He had never heard it before but he liked it alot and was blasting it as he drove me home. It put a big smile on his face and he said the whole interaction really made his day (or morning). I've been listening to this song since it came out in the 90's, but now I'll always remember it from that morning on new years day.

My theory is this: LPs were sellable but bulky CDs came along and distribution costs halved (because units shifted doubled for same effort) CDs sold the same as LPs, therefore profit Profit = strong industry = lots of good work and innovation Napster came along, money fell out of industry, industry participants (ie artists) left profit made by selling ring tones - hence crazy frog charting itunes made music profitable again, but far less so than the golden era of CD distribution music money now earned through one hit wonders on youtube - eg Gangnam style. Very few full albums that are works of art in their entirety a-la Avalanches since I left you or moon safari by air, or any of the amazing hit-packed albums of the 90s. The golden age of music is over.

I was 5 years old when this came ou, i remember watching this on mtv around 94-95. 90s is pretty nostalgic for me.

90s was the pinnacle of humanities existence. Just the right amount of tech (no toxic social media). High streets were still healthy. Music was unbelievable. Sitcoms peaked. Just so much goodness. I’ll die on the hill that it’s the greatest decade ever !!!

The world is such a toxic place today that I can’t believe a time like the 90’s existed. What an amazing time it was - so much optimism, no social media, no wokeness, great music, great films&television, sports were more enjoyable, even the food tasted better. It’s like we’re in a post apocalyptic world now in 2023.
