Hi Sharon, need your opinion. My situation: I have to work full-time. I'm completely new to UX/UI Design (literally zero experience). I don't mind the bootcamp being 6 months or longer. I graduated from DesignLab in July (part-time track because I was working full time) and I'd recommend it! I had no design experience whatsoever and I came with a nursing background. I did end up getting a full-time job a few months after it.

Hey Sharon! Awesome Video! Thank you for taking time to give your experience! I am a Virginia Tech grad and have been out of the IT world for about a year now doing some soul searching and coming back. I decided I want to be a software engineer. Have you heard anything about GA vs Springboard regarding Software Engineering? I have experience with programming, but would like a total over-haul. GA looked very welcoming, but it also looks like I have to be in the online class which my current out of IT job wouldn't have time for.. Springboard looks very self-paced, which would fit my schedule better, but I would find a new job if it meant GA is better quality. It looks like GA does have better and more consistent placements than Springboard, but I don't know that for certain. Anyways! I apologize for the long paragraph and I thank you for your time!

Hey! Yeah so I knew I wanted to work at FAANG eventually and the mentors at Springboard work at FAANG- I believed if I could receive feedback from them my portfolio would be more “up to standard” I suppose. I really enjoyed Springboard due to this :)

Hey! Thank you so much for this video. It has helped me a lot. So at the moment, I graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Visual Design. I am working as a social media manager and recently started to do research on the Tech Field. I found UX Design and realized it was for me. I just don't know where to start. I'm considering getting a master's degree but then again I want to really want to start working as soon as I can because of where I am financial. What do you think would be the best approach for me?

I am in the world of therapy/car management I’m in no rush but I would like to make sure that I can have a great profolio when I finish whatever program I’ve tried. I’m so lost in which to choose…

For me, I’m gonna start a new graphic design job soon after being in another for 3 years. I got the job but personally i don’t think graphic design is for me. I heard some of these 6 months bootcamps will eventually require you to focus more and more on them. I’m scared of the time commitment especially since i have a long commute 3/5 days So i have graphic design experience, I’m willing I put in like 20-30 hours a week in a camp. (Camps will give you hour estimations but i heard it really varies on your dedication and effort), maybe a longer camp will be better so i don’t burn out?

Great video! Very informative. I am looking into a UX/UI boot camp but don't know what to go for since I heard good things in many of them. My background is in graphic and interaction design so I do have some knowledge in design, some UX research (journey maps, user journeys, ux/ui analysis, user personas), and some knowledge in prototyping. Since you have graphic design knowledge, do springboard and focus most of ur efforts with your mentor (preferably from a tier 1 company if that’s what ur going for) you’ll improve exponentially. Just make sure to make ur own project prompts for case studies

Hey I have been looking into UX and self learning basic and did short course for foundation. I have done masters in marketing and been working on CS for 10 years. I have interested in UX because the field is creative and tech friendly. I would like to be ready for career change and GA seem to be quite straightforward option but I cant afford to invest 10-12weeks with no job as well as the amount is huge. Any suggestions?

Hiya! Yeah I had the same question. I thought of just UX since if I’ll be a UX designer, wouldn’t just UX be sufficient? But now being in the industry esp for ur first job you’re kinda expected to do both so I’d suggest doing UX/UI. It’ll give you an edge anyways.

When I was comparing bootcamp, I chose springboard for that reason as they have mentors from bigger tech companies who I can build a relationship with. Hope this helps!

Hey Sharon I have graduated with a degree in English BA and have no work experience. I’m 27 and I’m looking into this field for a career. I learnt there are boot camps but I’m confused as to which one would be better after I have completed the boot camp and start looking for jobs.

As a matter of fact, I already do some UX writing in my current job, alongside the technical writing tasks, which is my actual position. I don't have a degree in Design, I actually studied English in a prestigious Brazilian University and I also have some background in tech too, including coding. Now the bootcamps you mentioned seem amazing but paying more than 10K US dollars is unimaginable, since 1 dollar is worth almost 6 BRL (consider a big mac costs about 25 BRL). Take an online course, join online design community, learn by case study, attend any online seminar or workshop, then prepare a portofolio. I do this and already got a job, good luck for u

Hello! Thank you for this video it was very helpful. So I come from NO background in design. I mostly have a medical field background and I want to transition into UX UI, but I'm leaning more towards UI. Finances are kind of a big deal for me, but in terms of my education, I too look at the long run. I'm looking for something flexible, I want something hands-on, as well as focus on my portfolio so I can land a job. Hi! I think it could be a great option if you're looking for something more quickly. I'd consider it more. For a full on career change, 3 extra months on a portfolio for a ux internship/job- springboard may be better.

I’m looking into UX design as a major career change. I currently work full time as a nurse and (after this last year) I’m so burnt out, so I’ve have been wanting to move into the tech/design industry. I have somewhat of an artistic background but definitely not digital design. And I work nights so I’d need something that I can work on at my own pace and at different times than the average person. Do these boot camps work on a self paced basis or is it more of an online zoom style class with start and end times? Do you have a recommendation for my situation? I have 4 days off a week I can work on classes, etc, they just can’t be scheduled like I’ve seen some courses do.

Hey! Yeah in your case I'd definitely choose Springboard. It is self-paced and I know teammates who work full-time jobs as either nurses or in marketing (lots of diversity) who take the course at their own pace- just a heads up it may take you a bit longer to finish ( a year perhaps)? but that it totally normal (my teammate has been in the bootcamp for over a year now instead of the regular 9 months and is about to finish) and should not stop you from going for it :) Hope this helps!

Hi I would also comment and say that anyone in tech may still find moments of burnout, but there are still enjoyable moments especially using a creative mind to develop interesting products.

Thank you Sharon for sharing this informative bootcamp experience. It is really helpful for me. My background was quite various from PR, travel industry, supply chain and a co-founder for a start up. This is actually I felt I put UX design's hat on and inspired me to land in UX design world. Now I have finished google UX designer course. Still not sure about my resume and portfolio. I think a mentor is your best bet- receiving one through a Bootcamp is an easier way to receive that!

I am 18 working in retail. I come from very poor family and im wanting to know if i need a background college education at all. I only have education from high school and from future bootcamps. Would i still be able to get a job from just a bootcamp?

I am currently looking for a full-time job. But I am not from a design background instead of I took some Interaction design courses at my last years of the university. So I have some basic understanding of the design process and I also have my own portfolio but it looks like that still can't get me a job. Hm. I don't think there is a cut and dry answer but at least for me, I studied graphic design for a year before doing UX design. I bet you can go faster if the coursework is more intensive.

That’s a great question! I thought the same thing. Overall I thought you can’t really do UX if you don’t know UI- UI can help your UX look better (more job interviews). Plus, the competition is getting harder so if you can do both that naturally puts you at an edge.

If you want to specialize in either UX or UI, I think you can do that later after you establish a solid foundation and are able to speak the language of both. After all, even say if you were to just do UX in the future, you’ll still need to communicate your UX decisions to the UI designers so they know what to do anyways since the two overlap. Knowing both anyways will help that process in my opinion :)

For sure, it's definitely not easy and it's a mixture of using the right tools and putting in the effort. It's definitely possible, however.

I am actually debating if I should get into more of a traditional route (example: U of Toronto UX/UI certificate program ( 12 months long and around 800 CAD OR Brainstaion UX/UI program: 9 months p/t and around 12k to 15k CAD? Oooo that’s interesting! I’d explore U of T motel as it’s significantly cheaper, (check their alumni) over brainstation. If you’re doing brainstation, check out their alumni too to see where they got hired. Also consider springboard as they have some good mentors IMO and is a couple thousand cheaper.

hey hey! Yeah, I get that. I sometimes feel the same way. What you dealing rn is imposter syndrome and it is VERY common no matter where you go. I would first recognize what you are thinking is a limiting belief that is not in fact reality. Just because you dont have the skills now doesn't mean you can't have them yet! I sure as heck didn't have any UX experience, who was I to say I'd be any good? You'll hear many stories of people successfuly transitioning into UX from completely unrelated backgrounds (finance, real estate, fashion, etc.) so you are not alone. If I were you, give yourself grace knowing this is VERY normal feelings but that shouldn't stop you from eventually taking action on your dreams :) Take a bootcamp if that's what you feel! I may be bias but I'm all for springboard, lol. If you did choose springboard btw, message me on linkedin for a $1K coupon off ur tuition. Best of luck bb!

Hey! If you want to expand into other coursework I'd DEFINITELY recommend a basic graphic design course tbh. I did a graphic design 101 course at parsons and it helped me SO much in terms of my UI skills and making my work look more professional. Graphic design translated to UX bc in a way, each screen you design is like designing a mini-poster. If there is only one video you can watch, watch this one on the rules of type by The Futur (all their videos are fantastic tbh and you should watch them too for graphic design- don't need to enroll in a course) kzread.info/dash/bejne/g6aCy5t_ncfSqLw.html bc if your type design sucks, so will your UI. (UI gets you the interview, UX gets you the job). Hope this answers your question, In terms of UX- Springboard will do the job. Don't need any other course. Maybe spend 10 minutes looking into color psychology. But the book 101 things every designer should know by Susan W. will cover pretty much a good chunk of relevant UX psychology. (don't do basic psychology 101- that's useless) If you do enroll in a bootcamp w a mentor- Just make sure you get a good mentor (the ones they advertise on their website). Cheers! - Sharon

Is it possible to get a good UX job without a bootcamp and just, say, Google's UX certificate?

Hi! I just signed up for springboard-starts Monday. I’m having real concerns since I work full time and some other students are telling me that they are devoting at least 40 hours weekly to the program. Hey Erin! Yeah, both situations are normal. 40/week or 15-20. It is a self paced course so don’t feel pressured to go beyond your limit. If you can only commit 15-20 hours to Springboard, that’s totally fine. Everyone’s going at a different speed! :)

@@jaimebennett6498 Hi! I actually canceled three weeks in. I’m not sure what your background is, but I did not have background with a design tool. While I understand that the importance lies in the design thinking, you do have to be proficient in a tool (figma, or something else) in order to time box the curriculum. I plan to take some courses on my design tool of choice and then attend a boot camp from a different provider. It was not the right fit for me, but I have a few others I’m excited about!

@@jaimebennett6498 Yeah. I think they do an incredible job at selling the dream, but I do think some prep work is necessary especially if you are also working or just a functioning adult with a life. I’m taking the course from Code Academy, one from Figma Training, and another one from Career Foundry. They’re all at your own pace, and you can revisit lessons and do the practice modules alongside the instructor. I think it’s really helpful!

May I ask what made you choose Springboard over Career Foundry? These are the two that I'm contemplating over at the moment. My only real concern is over the quality and the outcome I am going to get out of it. Thank you for helping me.

Yeah, springboards mentors definitely did it for me because I knew having a mentor from Google or another FAANG was an absolute must for me. Instantly because I saw that with springboard I chose them.

Hi there! I don't recall what ISA is on top of my head but taking out a loan with climb credit (their provider) is normal. As with other purchases, as long as you can manage your finances accordingly to accommodate for this boot camp (for me I'm paying roughly 70 USD / month-- then 350/ month afterwards) you should be fine with the loan. Hope this helps! : )

Hi Sharon :) So all of these bootcamps will indeed be hands on- for General Assembly they are more guided within 6 months however it is very "cookie cutter" in terms of the portfolio. Springboard is self-guided (with suggested timeline + time estimates for modules) with a mentor and would take 6 months to complete if you do the UI track and 9 months if you do the UX/UI combo track. Personally, I loved Springboard but at this point I would consider how structured you'd like your portfolio to be. GA = highly structured SB = open prompts. Let me know if you have more questions!

Hi Sharon! I just signed up and started my SB program and so far, it's challenging because I don't come from a design background. I am actually considering looking into another program such as desginlab because you mentioned it as an option for people that don't come from a design background. Do you think I should stick with SB or switch to DL? Thank you!

If anything approaching your projects with a more challenging/critical eye is going to give you a leg up with your projects in this (increasingly) competitive space for work~ then again if you strongly feel otherwise, do take the path you believe is best for you!

What about UX design Institute. They have a really good program and is also for every kind of people, with background or no background in design. Plus is less expensive.

I have been looking into them as well. They are in the UK right? My concern was with then being out of the country, would employers not take it as seriously?

hey Sharon, what's your bootcamp recommendation for someone with a Communications degree (and existing absurd student loans) and with work background in digital media/video production and sales? I've been comparing DesignLab, Springboard, and Career Foundry the most myself.

Hi Adam! What do you mean by communications? If it's not related to graphic design I think in your case I would stick to 1st choice: General Assembly as I feel they are more suited towards those who are new to the more graphic design space. It is more expensive, but if I were you I'd be confident to create the best portfolio possible for a job that would more easily pay off my debt. Plus, it is a very famous Bootcamp. The only thing to be aware of is to slightly tweak project prompts so it doesn't look so cookie-cutter. 2nd Choice: If finances are more an issue, I would then choose DesignLab. 3rd Choice: There is no harm in trying Springboard either- however like I said this is more suited to those who have more of that visual design experience. Overall, the focus is the portfolio + mentor. Unless there is a VERY SPECIFIC mentor you'd like (my mentor works at Google), I would stick to the above. @@sharonyeunkim Thanks very much. For communications degree, that encompasses marketing/journalism/TV/film. I wasn't aware Springboard was more for people already sort of working in graphic design. I have seen GA's course that's $3,950 for twice per week classes for 10 weeks which would be affordable but I wonder if it would teach me as much as DesignLab. Take care!

Hi Amanda, I would say yes because this is meant for those who have at least a sense of design. I still say you should try if you can. You just need to take a test from Springboard to see if you are eligible to enroll in this Bootcamp.

Hello Sharon, I am an undergraduate majoring graphic design with a minor in computer science. I will be graduating next spring so I have less than a year left to dive in to the job market. I am currently working as a graphic designer so I have a strong design background with a little bit of coding knowledge therefore, I don't want to go over too much graphic design studies again within the bootcamp. My school does not offer ui/ux concentrated courses so I was considering taking free/cheap/short courses like the google certificate course offered by coursera but your video made me want to take a proper bootcamp to create an up to standard perfect portfolio. I thought I wanted to take a bootcamp from popular schools, for instance UC, but maybe not. Can you please recommend me some bootcamps or courses?

I can’t speak to Boot Camp from popular schools but at least from my research any of the above could be a good option depending on your situation. All I can say with my experience at Springboard I had a really positive experience that allowed me to work at Amazon afterwards

Hi , I am working as a developer ,without any design background and would like to switch my career to ui/ux designer in india.I can afford for any kind of bootcamps that provide me knowledge from basics to help in finding a job within India . if you're doing it part time, I reccomend springboard. If you were able to do full time, i'd reccomend general assembly. There is a test you need to take for springboard, however if you pass that should be fine. I had a coupon code for $750 off your tuition at springboard if you were interested in that!
