    I learned something new from Lucy again today. I did not know there is color specific for USB port on my Brother Luminare XP2 and not needed to purchase a high USB memory. I do have a dongle on my embroidery machine suggested by my dealer. I also have a female to female USB port connector for my new HP laptop which can be purchase at Amazon inexpensive. Thank you, Lucy. You always have great ideas for us.

    Hopefully others will see your comment about the cable to connect to the computer. I edited that info out of my video because it felt like too much. But dealers charge as much as $60 for those cables. And Amazon sells the same thing for $10!!! And as usual, Thank you for your sweet comments Beth!

    Another life extender of USB sticks is to pull them out slowly. It reduces static opportunities by having more time with a grounded (safest). The silver rectangle is your ground. Slow and straight out disconnection is the best!

    Lucy, you are correct again in these things!!!!! In my case, the only brands of USB sticks I am using for my machines are SanDisk and Onn, and the sticks are no larger than 4GB, but actually any brand had worked from me, even generics. For external storage I do not trust any cloud service. I got two portable 2 TB each SSD from Seagate in a mirror fashion. In that way I can have access to everything I want without the hassle these cloud providers can give, lots of protection, and they are two layer password protected. Thanks for your very welcome topic!!!!!!

    I have found that both my single-needle and 7-needle machines are happiest if I don't try to load in a bunch of files that I don't intend to stitch out anyway. I just load up the file(s) I'm intending to use in this session. Also, I plug a short USB extension into the machine's USB port and then plug my USB stick into the end of that. This reduces wear and tear on the machine's port and moves all the wear and tear into the other end of that short cable.

    Great info. Thanks! As for how much storage should you get on your USB stick (16GB? 64GB? Etc.), a good guide would be to get the same size as the “branded” stick that came with your machine (if one came with it). The manufacturer will most likely only ship one they know to be compatible, so mirroring what they used would be a good rule of thumb for your thumb drive. 😄

    This is all brand new for me - love the simplicity of your directions & recommendations - thank you. My Viking Topaz 50 came with a 1gb USB, what do you recommend I buy for future downloads, the machine & USB are both black. I'd like to hook up my computer directly to the machine to bypass downloading to the flash drive - can it be done with a dongle cable? I'm thinking ahead to updated info from Viking for my machine. Hope this makes sense to you. Thank you.

  • @BallyhooCreations

    @BallyhooCreations

    You should be safe with another USB stick that is USB 2.0 (black inside) and 1 gb - the same as the USB stick Viking gave you. IF you need to format that USB stick, the free Viking software should have an option for that (but not all machines require this.) As for a direct cable, I don't think the Topaz 50 supports that. The USB ports on most embroidery machines are "dumb" and can only read from a stick.

    You will be safe with any USB2.0 stick with smaller storage size under 16GB. And look for a short USB extension cable of about 1 foot or less, that way you can plug the stick into that extension cable instead of your machine. (even though people call them dongles, they are actually extension cables) I have some Amazon product links in a related blog post ballyhoocreations.com/2021/09/usb-stick-for-embroidery-machines/

  • @BallyhooCreations

    @BallyhooCreations

    5 ай бұрын

    hello @timelesscottagegifts7240 I also have a designer 1. It only reads SHV but you must format the USB stick using software. You cannot drag and drop SHV files to the USB like you can with other formats - it can only be written with software. The Viking editor software can do it and you can probably find a free version for that task. I use Embird which can also format and write SHV files. You also need to be sure your USB is 2.0 (black inside) which is how I embarked on this whole USB journey in the first place - with my Viking.

    Hi Claudia. For some reason my previous reply got lost so I'll try again. You might still be able to embroider. I've been using the Designer 1 for over a decade and I'm aghast at the bad and wrong advice I've heard from the dealer/repair shop. People use the word "dongle" for different things. If the USB stick broke, you can easily replace it using the advice in this video. If the USB dongle that plugs into your computer to run the software has broken - you can switch to better software and I use Embird to create my SHV files. IF the broken thing is the card reader for the older Designer 1, those are hard to find but still come up on the used market from time to time.

    I am looking at amazon to buy a usb stick. Getting a lot of guff from the men in my house who say (My Bernina 790+ ) can take any size. However, I thought I read somewhere (no help from dealer) it is better if you get one with 2-4mg. When I look on amazon they really don't just say 2mg they have a bunch of other numbers which is confusing. Can you hep????

  • @BallyhooCreations

    You Bernina 790 uses more advanced computing than most embroidery machines. It can handle up to 16GB of storage in the USB stick and that's what Bernina sells. The other number is is the USB version. You can rewatch the video - but if the USB port on your machine is blue inside you should get a USB 3.0 stick but if it's black then get USB 2.0. I *think* it's blue but none of the online photos show it. It sounds like you have family members that can help you buy and format the stick so let them help. And worst case- Amazon takes returns so if it doesn't work you can get a refund.

    Hello very informative words....I have a question and maybe you can help me....I have a basic beginner machine....aventura 2 sewing/embr machine. I purchased my usb stick, downloaded some fonts, yet when I went to try to put these fonts onto a shirt/workshirt for my husband....when I try to move the letters/adjust it....you can only do one letter at a time....and move each letter at a time.It's so small that you are trying to move each letter, then when it brings it up....it actually goes on the other letter....I have to slide it with my finger and itusually moves the wrong letter. With the few built in fonts with my machine....it will outline the whole name and move the whole name together. When I have fonts bought like I said from somewhere else you canonly move one letter and I cannot line them up...what is wrong with this? Am I doing something wrong , or is this the way it is with fonts? Appreciate any help

    Embroidery fonts come in different formats. It is common for them to be a separate file for each letter like what you bought. You can buy software to handle fonts, and I believe the free version of embrilliance supports their BX font format so you can build words and send to your machine as one file. Other software can do it too but not in their free versions.

    White is an older version for USB 1.0, while the black is 2.0. People use the word "dongle" to mean different things. Did you mean the actual USB stick is white inside? That might not work. But if you're talking about the short USB extension cable, then try it and see. I suspect the short cable that is white inside might work. Either way - try it and see if it works. it depends on your embroidery machine. If you have Janome, you need to set up a folder for the new stick. On older Vikings, you need software to format the USB stick. Brother and Babylock don't need formatting - just drag and drop files like any other computer. You can do a google search for your machine and "format USB stick" to see if there are special circumstances with your machine brand.

    The Babylock Esante will connect directly to your computer. It uses a USB-B port on the Esante and your computer will probably need a USB-A connector. You're in luck - because most USB PRINTER cables have this configuration!!! I use this cable amzn.to/45QjwoX (amazon affiliate link) to connect my computer to my Babylock Endurance and it's been working great for 2 years now even though I've rolled my chair over it a hundred times. When your Esante is powered on and connected to your computer with this cable, your computer should show it as a new drive or folder that you can drag and drop your files to. If yours is like mine - those files go away when the machine is powered off. But your machine might have a memory you can save to and store on the Babylock to get around that. Hope that gets you up and running!!!

    I'm sorry you're having problems. I know it's frustrating! I'm assuming you bought this machine uses since it's discontinued and therefore has no warranty. Watch this video again to be sure you are doing everything correctly. Most likely the USB stick must be black inside to match your machine. And take ALL the PES files OUT of folders on the USB stick to ensure the machine will read them. Also, be sure you're plugging the stick into the proper USB port since your machine has more than one. If none of that works, you may need to have the USB port replaced and any dealer (not just babylock) should be able to do that repair for you. Or you can run a USB cable from your computer to the machine to transfer designs to the Destiny as well. That's what one of those USB ports is for.

    This sounds like a formatting problem when you transfer your files from Embrilliance. You didn't say which file format you were sending to your Bernina. Hopefully you're using EXP+ and I would also avoid any special characters in your filenames like periods and such. Embrilliance has a facebook group that can probably help you better than me since I don't use Bernina or Embrilliance. Bernina prefers the ART file format but they don't allow any software other than Bernina to create those files. So programs like Embrilliance have workarounds for EXP or DST formats instead. You need to learn those workarounds or your designs won't show up on your embroidery machine menu correctly.

    The PES files should still work. PES is one of the few formats that are good about backward compatibly. And you can use inexpensive or free software to convert them if needed. The 5x7 hoop can do a lot more than han a 4x4 so I always suggest buying the largest embroidery field you can afford. On another note, your old stabilizers may be ok but the old threads may cause tons of problems. Rayon will dry out, while the old poly threads are poor compared to today's versions. IF you have issues, try a new spool of 49 wt poly to be safe. I've thrown out lots of old threads that shred - not worth the trouble anymore. Threads have actually advanced more than the machines have!

    This is the short USB cable I have attached to my machine amzn.to/3vZB5pe (amazon affiliate link) And even though it's blue inside, it works fine with USB2.0 black ports because the cable only passes information and doesn't process information.
