    Hello Thorsten, I have never tried a Leica in my life but if I had to start with one camera it would be the Leica M240. Not for the video function which I think is useless on a Leica but for the way it is made and the battery life when I am on a wedding session. Thank you very much for your video.

    Leica M240 is a good deal to begin with. You can just forget about the video; but it can actually be a handy function if you want to do some music video or other artsy video. But video is always a production because you need sound, light control focus control, and the camera has to be steady. That's why video usually is a team.

    Thank you for this exposition. What I miss is Leica's response to all the features of the M240 and the desire of photographers to go back to the basics, namely the MD-262. This is my favorite Leica-M. Completely stripped of all M-240 features: only shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation and ISO. Not even a screen.

    Great video. Actually, the M8.2 had a tougher LCD screen and rangefinder tweaks, but the sensor was the same and still required the use of UV/IR filters. I’ve just bought a beautiful M9-P and M-P (Typ 240).

    Hi there, such an informative video! One thing i wanna ask you. Have you ever met M240 with straight line vertical / horizontal line on the results? Because i found 2 M240s have the same issue. The first one with vertical straigt line, and the second one with horizontal. But in the second one, the issue is come and go. This is very frustrating me..

    Lovely video. One correction, the M8.2 has the same issue as the M8 regarding the "false colors due to infrared light sensitivity", but that is an excellent reason FOR buying the M8.2 as it is great for infrared photography, and with a simple filter placed over the lens, the false colors are eliminated. I enjoyed your historical view of M cameras. I started out with an M2, replacing my Nikon SP, which replaced my Contax II - and this was back in the 1960's. I currently use my M10, and don't have any interest in changing to something else - and yes, I do still have my M8.2, M3, and M2 cameras.

    Thanks for this. 👌 Actually, the concept of "small negative - big picture" was partly inspired by the fact that 35mm cinefilm was of much higher quality than the larger format roll and sheet film for still photography. The first camera Oskar Barnac constructed was made for batch-testing cinefilm. .. and yes, it was "half-frame". So he doubled it to 24x36 to what became known as full-frame.

I love the idea of an M camera, but with a limited budget, would my 40mm work OK on the M240? Also how will I get on in bright light with the ISO 200 rather than ISO 50 on my SL and no electronic shutter, is it a case of buy an ND filter?

    Good video, but .... Basically it is not a Digital Sensor but an Analog Sensor ! More light equals more output voltage, then it will be translated to Digital in the A/D Convertor. - Your explanation of the CCD problems with the M9 is correct however there is something else to take in consideration. Since 2019 there are no replacement CCD sensors anymore although Leica promised to deliver spare parts till 2022. But since a year or 2 other spare part of the M9 were also already out of sale, so picking up, a not that expensive, defect M9 just for the parts may end up as a nice investment for the future ;-) - And I agree on 24MP is enough and the sweet spot for FF ! - Further more very informative, thanks for sharing !!

    I'm afraid Leica is stuck between a rock and a hard place by the need to maintain the M3 form factor and the need to keep up with the Joneses. The new stuff, such as the necessary IBIS, and an in-camera EVF simply does not fit into that small body. The compromises, such as the external EVF, and the option to select fewer Mps -which is a bit like buying a Ferrari to drive it in second gear, leave me cold. I've jumped ship and I'm now a very happy SL2-S user. Using it with m-mount lenses is a joy. Cheers, OX

    Hi, thank you for a great video again! Do I get correctly that even M11 is still a manual focus camera? If so - what is the trick you make so precise focus on the persons eye with such a shallow depth of field when I with my Nikon D700 (semi-pro) and continuous autofocus on exact focusing point can't nail it more than 1/3 of all my shots? Thank you! P.S. I also created a leather pad on my desk similar to yours inspired by you :) great feeling to do writing, programming, tinkering with some electronics or fine mechanics on it.

    Good on the desk pad! I should do a video on focusing. Yes, it is still manual focusing and won't change anytime soon (likely never). The Leica Q2, Leica SL2 and so on are auto focus.

    With ever increasing mp counts on new models one has to ask: When does a rangefinder camera cease to be an effective hand-held image making tool? Using a rangefinder as a focusing mechanism becomes increasingly difficult with higher mp counts . . . and reaches a point when it actually becomes counterproductive and produces less, not more, sharp images. This is certainly true when a rangefinder camera is used as it was originally intended to be used; that is, hand-held in fluid situations (e.g. reportage, street photography, etc.) when there isn't enough time to achieve critically sharp focus. And this doesn't even take into account hand shake, which is another factor that comes into play with higher mp counts. Combined, rangefinders and hand shake conspire to render a death blow to the very 'raison d'etre' of high mp counts - sharpness. For these reasons, I consider 24 mp to be the maximum mp count that still allows a 35mm rangefinder camera to be used as originally intended - hand held in fluid situations.

  • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    60MP simply means that when you nail the focus, you get really crisp and clear pictues. When you don't it's going to be high resolution of slightly out of focus. Not really any difference unless you zoom in on small details. Medium format have had high megapixels for a while, same story. 40MP and 60MP might open up for new clarity, but that has to be tested to be seen. Haven't gone there yet.

  • @bernardlesperance742

    @bernardlesperance742

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard Wrong. The higher the pixel count the less forgiving the sensor is of anything not precisely focused. In other words, "high resolution of slightly out of focus" IS very different than "when you nail the focus." The difference is clearly visible without "zooming in on small details." And it is NOT "same story" with medium format cameras - medium format cameras have much larger sensors (and pixels), which renders them proportionally less susceptible to the problem ... but only up to a point. The same rules of physics apply - more pixels will make "slightly out of focus" files more obviously out of focus. Oh, and by the way, it has been tested and it has been seen. Some have "gone there".

    Please add the Monochrom versions to your exceptional Leica lineup. I shoot with the Q2M, and it’s ONLY downside is that the 28mm lens is fixed. A convenient “workaround” though is with a 47 mega pixel sensor, you can easily crop down to a 35mm “crop frame” POV. Not the same of course as a 35mm APO Summicron. ...smile...

    Yes the R9 and R8 with DMR digital back are quite beautiful. 10MP CCD sensor, and the color fidelity and clarity is quite noticeable. They stopped when Imacon was bought by Hasselblad, and they saw Leica and Hasselblad as competitors. So Hasselblad didn't want to supply sensors and electronics to Leica (Leica had tried to buy Hasselblad before that, and then did their own Leica S medium format camera). So 3,000 units or less was made. Good deal on the M8!

If I upgrade to the 60mp M11, would I actually notice the even greater detail available in my 8x10 prints? I haven't been able to compare 8x10's from 40mp files to 8x10's with 60mp files.

    Jury still out on that. In terms of details, some but really not important because you would look at a 8x10 print from a distance and not that close. What is relevant to look at is if the backlit sensor (and sensor design in general) opens up more details and improve the color fidelity. And if one like the colors the sensor makes, to begin with. More on that later.

    Thorsten , do you think Leica will ever make a full frame Q style camera with an interchangeable lens? The extra features of the Q like image stabilisation and autofocus, together with the major price saving (when compared with M and its lens), make the Q a very attractive proposition. I think the SL is too big and strays from the Leica tradition of a small discrete camera.

  • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    I doubt it. I believe the Q will stay the Q as one small compact package. It has digital zoom/crop. Maybe they would make a version with 35mm or 50mm down the road. But a smaller body for M lenses ... it would be a different story. The next version Leica CL that takes L lenses, that one might be a route in that direction.

    Forgive me for my ignorance but just curious, what the letters Q, M and SL stand for? can you please explain their meaning and difference in applications just based on these letters?

  • @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    @MagicOfLight_ThorstenOvergaard

    2 жыл бұрын

    The M originally stands for "Messsucher", which is German "Meßsucher" for "Rangefinder". The SL stands for Single Lens, as SLR is Single Lens Reflex. The Leica Q doesn't have a reference to any other meaning. Leica S is also "just a name". The Leica R system isn't being produced anymore, but was Reflex (as in Single Lens Reflex, SLR). Leica D-lux is Digital, C-lux is Compact. Not a great meaning behind the names, really. For example the Leica M3 was called that because the rangefinder had three framelines inside, so sort of a "gimmick" name to tell this camera had both Rangefinder and 3 framelines. But this is also why Leica M1 and M2 came after the Leica M3, and then after that, they followed the sequence of numbers with M4, M5, M6 and so on.

    Yes, Leica 10-R might vey well become a classic. You could say, anything that "has a lot of Leica M3 and Leica M9 in it, is going to be loved for a long time". I think, in acquiring a camera, one has to stop thinking camera and start think household economy. (No, I'm not trying to make you wrong, I'm just thinking aloud). We buy cars and accessories to the cars and install swimming pols and other things, which in comparison are much more money and often last less years and make us less happy. I always found it odd that some would go through so much trouble convincing themselves they deserved a Leica, yet at the same time spend a Leica a year on new wheels for the car. So the consideration has to change, passion is important 🙂

    My Leica IIIa is/was a family camera equipped with a 50mm f/1.5->9 Taylor-Hobson Xenon. This was an uncoated, pre-World War II "speed lens" that was afflicted with dirt and hazy lens elements. It was a bit better than a Holga lens, so I replaced it with a 1950's, coated, collapsible 50mm f/3.5 Elmar. The Elmar produced much better images, and I didn't miss the "lack of lens speed" at all. I did yearn for an M-series Leica, but settled for a Canon P with a 50mm f/1.8 Canon lens, which never let me down. Not having to "invest in a blue chip investment," I put my money into Leica screw mount lenses such as a 28mm f/2.8 Canon, and 105mm f/2.5 Nikkor.

    I think that Leica buys its sensors from Sony. So, it is natural that for the M11 they would use the sensor from the Sony A1 or A4R. Of course, then they have their own processing chips and software but I suspect the M will stay at 60Mpixels until Sony (or someone else from whom Leica would purchase) establishes a higher resolution sensor that meets Leica's requirements. The Sony one seems to fill the bill for the moment.

    Hi Thorsten, The real story behind the Typ 240,etc labeling is not copying Apple. Actually, Leica did copy another brand : Porsche. Even if it confused people, it sounded very cool… like the model of a Porsche sounds. Fun fact : Porsche still uses the original labeling of cars, but the name pushed by marketing team is different. You know how those creative marketing people can have very weird ideas (we have a similar Pro background)

An excellent and fantastic lens, the Voigtlander Nokton 35 mm f1.2 Asp II, attached to Leica works very poorly. The corners of the photo are soft, blurred and there is a vignette. The same lens on the Sony A7 works great and perfectly. The photos are perfectly sharp from corner to corner. There is little vignette only. It was my first and last Leica.

    The biggest concern in buying a Leica, is the service. How can you pay that amount for a camera, with such a long service time? When it needs a repair, or adjustment, you will have to wait months before it is back. Is the problem not resolved, you can send it in again and wait 2+ months more. This is simply not acceptable for this price tag. And this is why many pros can't use it, even if they would. A Leica should be quality - and a service that is better than Fuji, Canon etc. Love the M and Q series. But you need to buy at least two bodies, if you want to photograph all year.... Not acceptable!
