I strongly suggest using a custom domain with these services. If they go away, you can simply shift your current email address to another provider. The Gmail's and Hotmail's are far less likely to shutdown or vanish. If you plan on using one of these services for your primary email, and your email is important to you, use a custom domain that you can move around freely and you can have practically forever, regardless of the underlying service provider.

@June@97 No, you still need it. If you care about your email, if you depend on your email in any meaningful way, then you should use a custom domain that you own. Personal doesn't make a difference. You want to be able to quickly and easily move your existing email address to another service provider in the event that the provider you are using ceases to offer their service. This way you continue to use the same email address with little disruption. If you use a domain owned by the provider and they go away, you lose your email address and everything in your life that you tied it to will need to be changed, if it's even possible to change in some cases.

This is an excellent idea. Not only does it protect against an email provider going out of business, but it allows you to switch providers if you change your mind in the future. That way all your accounts verifications still work and you don't have to email all your contacts to give them a new address.

Good video. Email aliases are the same thing as disposable addresses I think, that's the very reason why I'm still using Yahoo. Being able to obfuscate your main email address is a great security measure by itself.

Great video as always, Josh. One thing you didn’t mention, though (unless my ADHD kicked in and I missed it) was that sending email is generally not a secure way of transmitting data. Any email you send across the internet is only as secure as the weakest link in the custody chain. For example, Gmail uses TLS to encrypt messages going out. I use ProtonMail, which also supports TLS. If my daughter (who uses Gmail) and I exchange email messages, the contents and attachments are reasonably encrypted en route … although still readable by Google, whose servers will decrypt my message before dropping it in my daughter’s inbox. But if I use Protonmail or Gmail to send a message to someone at an email domain that *doesn’t* support TLS, my message (along with its attachments) is wide open for anyone to see en route, and that message will often hop through multiple servers that could store and analyze it. Another thing: Messages stored in my ProtonMail account are secure, but if I send a message to Gmail, it will be stored on Google’s servers. Google will harvest everything it can from that message, and if a government agency asks them for messages I’ve sent to Gmail domains, I have no doubt that they’ll gladly hand it over. (ProtonMail is less likely to, but there are cases where it has handed over data to foreign governments.) To be *truly* secure when using email, I (and anyone else using email) need to take specific steps, such as: • Use a secure email (like one of the four you mentioned) and only send messages to other addresses in the same domain. (Messages sent in-network, from one ProtonMail address to another, are automatically end-to-end encrypted.) • Use PGP and exchange keys with the recipient before sending email to them. ProtonMail, StartMail, and MailFence support PGP; Tutunota doesn’t (for reasons they explained in a blog post). Gmail doesn’t support PGP natively, although you can do it with a browser plug-in. The problem with PGP is that it requires people to take steps to create, manage, and exchange keys, which admittedly is hard. (My father, who’s in his 80s, could never manage it. In fact, I don’t personally know many people who can.) And the subject line of the message can’t be encrypted, so don’t send a message with “Super secret passwords and credit card numbers” as the subject line, even if you encrypt the body of the message. • ProtonMail has an encryption feature that will send a message simply as a URL to a page on ProtonMail’s server. The recipient opens the web page and enters a password to read the message and open any attachments. The weak link in the chain is getting the password to the recipient-unless they already know it, you have to send it to them through some other secure method (i.e., not email or SMS). I’ve used Signal to do this, but then why would I bother to send a secure email *and* send the password through Signal, when I can just send the message in Signal in the first place? • Which brings me to the last option, which is to use Signal or Telegram or another secure instant messaging client and skip email altogether. I’m new to all of this, so I’m curious. Which of the two would you recommend? I was going to go with proton or the Tutanota? I just really wanna use it for crypto. Setting up crypto accounts and setting up vpn services with expressvpn. Any input or personal opinion on which to use for my purposes would be great. Tired of the gov on their hands with everything we do that they don’t need to be on.

Hi Josh, thanks for the video. Could you please explain how does thunderbird compromise the benefits of these providers?

I tried setting up tutanota in the past and I don't like the interface. I also like making multiple emails to organize what each one receives rather that sorting recieved email into folders. It's also a good security measure just in case one email gets compromised I still have many others. Anyways for whatever reason tutanota doesn't like multiple emails and now they have my IP or something and I can't use it anymore. Glad I came across this video to learn about more options.

In 2021 ProtonMail logged the IP of a French National, leading to his arrest. PM must comply with Swiss law, who in this case, was contacted via EuroPol at the behest of the French Gov. The man’s crime, according to tech crunch, was he and his group were apartment squatting in protest against gentrification, real estate speculation, Airbnb and high-end restaurants (some other articles cited him as a climate-activists)- in any case, they’ve set a precedent, which is good to be aware of.

lol everytime i see people bring this up it makes me laugh so hard because most email companies and clients when handed a warrant will give your stuff out. Heck google will give ur local police full access too your acc with a warrant . Same with Microsoft and their emails. It’s just the world we live in companies don’t wanna be held accountable for one bad user so they don’t fight for them.

Personally, I still use apple mail, because it’s the most accessible for the blind like myself. Proton mail is not too bad on the Accessibility side, but I am not too sure about Tutanota.

I haven't as yet made the switch to a secure email platform and have currently about 5 emails through the usual gmail, outlook, yahoo forums. I watched a KZread that suggested Gmail, Windows Mail or Outlook are not secure but instead to use Mozilla Thunderbird, which I have done. Do you have any other comments on this issue?

I've been using protonmail for several years. Unfortunately their calendar isn't incorporated in their app. If I open protonmail to read mail in a browser it seems that the security and encryption of the mail are defeated and saved to computer or tablet cached in plain text.

I now communicate via uMail from the Utopia ecosystem. Highly recommend if you need security and anonymity.

i live in china, i highly recommend proton email as you can access it without VPN unlike gmail and chinese emails like QQ are likely to be monitored by the ccp

New sub - like your explanations many thanks!! Would love to see these services offer a family plan or small business plan. (4 -5 users). It has been hard to find options.

Use Proton but why does chrome ask to open my emails? I thought having a private email it would just open on it's own. So if chrome is opening my emails in my private account it's not really private?

About ProtonMail- I read that they suffered through two separate DDOS attacks with the latest one being as recent as 2018. Should this be of concern? What are your thoughts?

About these email providers that you mentioned in this video, you said that none of them can read your mail and that only you hold the key. Well I want to inform you that I saw a video about Proton mail the other day where they were asked by authorities to hand over a persons email account and physical address because he is wanted for truancy. So Proton obliged with the request. But you said in this video that the email providers you mentioned in this video can't even do that. But Proton did. So I guess then that Proton also has the key to your mail like you do. So I'm going to try StartMail and hope that they are more secure than Proton.

I don’t understand the third party mail client comment at the end. Proton mail has the ability to be connected and viewed through Apple’s Mail app on Macs. How does this compromise the security of the mail itself?

I almost thought I was tracking with you right up until the end when you said not to use Thunderbird, now I'm just as confused as I was before I watched your video. I've been using Thunderbird for over 12 years and I'm not willing to loose everything that I have saved on my HDD in email.

I actually disagree with his thunderbird comment. Thunderbird allows you to pull the mail off their server and purge it from their servers. In my opinion that’s a more secure solution because I don’t trust anyone to store data in the cloud. We’ve seen major companies like google, Microsoft, and LastPass who have lost their encrypted data sets which bypasses all your MFA. Get the data out of the cloud if you want to be truly safe.

I just want to get away from Yahoo and their unrelenting SPAM - OMG it's getting worse and I am super careful about what I click on and where I go, but it does not seem to matter. Thank you for your video.

Fun fact: In Germany among other countries the landlord is not allowed to have a key to your apartment.

So Tutanota. First of all, you MUST use their "App" as there are no other option. Contacts cannot sync with Android, which they claim is coming since 2019. The "App" is not an actual app, but rather a Chrome View that loads the WebUI. Dark/Light is a static option, no option to base this on time or device default. I could go on. I would stay clear of this. Also remember one thing. You may receive your mails securely with all this encryption. But someone out there has an exact copy of this mail in their "Sent" folder that was sent to your service in whichever way they deal with mails. I don't really care about how mails are stored or sent. You should never use mail for something that requires security in the first place. I just wanted a non-google service that would protect access to the mail box a bit more. Other than that, normal things like being able to sync contacts, using my own mail clients, calendar apps etc is a feature, not a bug.

What about outlook 2010 or thunderbird for personal use?

Wait, Thunderbird is on your own machine AND with TLS there is not clear reason to thing it harms security that I know of. What am I missing?

What about Eprivo Encrypted Email? Any comments would be appreciated. This app has been out for a while now - but why no reviews on it. It sure looks pretty good and secure and has some good features…

Ok what about OnMail is it a secure mail ???

The very last point is problematic for me. What would be the increased risk of accessing protonmail by an open-source command-line tool like neomutt?

Costs vary, but I believe all of these options have a free version with limited storage. That also means you can try any one of these for free to see if you like it, and they’re all pretty cheap on a monthly basis. Storage amount is different for each one.

Great question, Kevin, and as with almost anything, my answer will be NO - you rarely "need" these services. For me, this kind of service is useful for all the communication that *can't* happen via Signal. For example, I use a secure email for my banking, investment accounts and for anything related to my taxes and IRS stuff. Also, for those people who don't want their email communications used by big data to profile us, there is a privacy component to choosing a secure email provider. No, I don't think there's any harm. My warning was for those who were just setting a blanket "forward all emails" and never logging into their secure email inbox. In that case, you're negating the advantage of the encryption.

any thoughts on Zoho?

I considered using ProtonMail as my primary mail (switching from hotmail), and I do like the app and user interface. But I am a bit worried about losing all my emails if I some day should need a password reset. Should I ever need to? - no. But "what if" sticks in my brain. As far as I understand it, I can reset my password, and still access my account, but I get a new encryption key, and thus can no longer access my old emails, because the key doesn't match anymore.

Exactly right. And that's part of the risk of controlling your own keys (as opposed to having Gmail as your benevolent overlord). A couple ideas: 1) you could do a quarterly or yearly backup of your email or 2) you could make sure to store your password/backup 2FA in another location.

And you are good to go , if any chance you forget your password or want reset you can , but your old mails will be in encrypted form, just you need your recovery key to decrypt the same and now you've the access of old mails

with the open source, even if the company who runs it goes out of business you can easily use the code in your server to run the service and backup everything to another provider

mailfense is base in beligusm, Tutanota is base in germany, from 14 eys, proton mail from Swaziland, was said to be most secure, but recent report say even it is most secure it has to follow the law from that country based in.

Unfortunately there are only paid secure emails. (I know that those give us a free account, but 1gb its just for test purpose)

I'm sure it's not a bad email platform, but if it's "free" and "ad-supported", then it's really no different than Gmail. Not worse, really, but also not better per se.

Startmail asked me for payment so not free - You implied that startmail is free by saying that you get unlimited aliases, the other services only offer in the paid version. I am looking at startmail that has free 7 day trial, but you have to pay after that, this is trial only. You did get me to look at them :/ good video by the way.

You can get a limited Proton Mail account for free.

Can you explain what is the privacy concern with using a PIM (e.g. Thunderbird) on your personal desktop? I'll give an example: ProtonMail, you must use their bridge application to connect to your account and relay your mail through their own encrypted protocol (in a 2fa supported manner), only then do you connect thunderbird to the bridge application locally via the standard ssl encrypted protocols. Again that's local on the device itself. Obviously if your PC is compromised, all bets are off...and that same holds true with the webinterface and session token attacks. I trust my local network, same reason why some crazy people run their own email service. If I could, in an economic manner, local would be the ultimate ideal privacy solution. So, again, where is the privacy concern?

Thanks for the feedback, Joshua. For the average user, the proper setup of this encrypted connection between your email provider and email client is often too much. I'm also considering the fact that we're adding yet another "link" in the security chain where there is so much unknown. Has the user encrypted their hard drive? Do they lock their computer? If you can confidently set up the bridge application and secure the device that stores your email archive, then my privacy concerns are mostly nothing. But I'm speaking to the "average" user here, and I think sometimes the simplest answer (accessing a web-based mail client) are often the best.

I used a secure key when they first came out, paid a lot of money, then they obsoleted them, I was left out and have not trusted them since.

You can't encrypt email that is being sent to you (although you can open it in a secured environment). You can, however, encrypt email that you send to Gmail accounts.

Is this also not kind of dangarous? I mean this makes such communication ways a perfect and popular match for criminals and blackmailers, as there is no chance of judicial tracking against them.

Fastmail also accepts hardware 2FA keys, e.g. Yubico

Yes, but you need an invite to try them. They also lost a lot of data a year or two ago. Plus there is talk that the guy running it is a little sketchy...

I like it, but it's very different. Duck Duck Go is a search engine. What I'm talking about here are encrypted email providers. Basically a more secure alternative to Gmail or Yahoo.

Yes, but 2FA only secures your login, it's not an encryption for your actual mail that is sitting on the Google servers.

I think the most secured mail in the world, is Microsoft Outlook, without a password, so for login you need to plug a physical USB in your PC

I have used Tutanota for years. I find it useful but has two weaknesses - less than stellar custom service and search function is not good. In fact it barely works at all. Please do a detailed comparison in a medium (blog?) that requires a longer attention span and text plus charts rather than KZread. I like your channel I just don't like the medium (KZread). Oh, and I as about to thank you for not being commercially-affiliated with any of these companies. Cancel that. Affiliate links so how can I trust you to be brutal honest?

While Germany supposedly has strict data protection laws and the GDPR- General Data Protection Regulation, it is still a part of the Fourteen eyes surveillance alliance. And basically there is no real protection because it cancels out those protection laws. So it makes me wonder if Tutanota is really that safe.

You're wrong. Protonmail have given up data when asked by security aka police. So have Tutanota. End to end encryption only works if its tuta to tuta or proton to proton etc. Also if they wanted to any of these services can look at your mail. Nothing is truly secure
