Which is it? Bison or Buffalo?

One of the most popular questions I seem to always get is, do I call them Bison or Buffalo? Which is a very good question! There is some history behind both names. Whichever term you want to use, we are still talking about the American Bison, the American Mammal!

For thousands of years the native Americans use the term Natonka as reference to the North American Buffalo (the great beast). In 1758 they were classified as a species bison bison. To the far north a species called wood bison range across North America and yes Europe and Eurasia also have their own wood bison or wisent.

Great information. Was raised with the term buffalo and was confused when only recently hearing bison. Visited Oklahoma in 1973 when I was a freshman and saw a live presentation of the trail of tears. A part of US American history that needs to always be taught so that it is never repeated. Enjoying watching you and your bison.

I asked my old friend Fred Flintstone (proud member of the Buffalo lodge) and here is what he told me: Bison & cattle have 60 chromosomes (which is why they can inter-breed). Swamp, River & Cape have Buffalo have 48, 50 & 52 chromosomes respectively (which is why buffalo cannot be inter-bred with Bison or cattle).

Great video and explanation of the name Bison. My alltime favorite movie is also Dances with Wolves.😃 However Dusty did you realize that November 21st 2020 is the 30th anniversary of the Debut of Dances with Wolves was released November 21, 1990 just two years after the Book was written and released in 1988. I still think it would be awesome if you had a small Native American camp set up in front of the Bison pasture along with a few color breed horses like Paint's and Appaloosa's maybe grazing around a small group of TeePee's set up with a fire pit in the center. I'll bet Dusty you could do a go fund me to raise the money to build such a camp. Rent out the TeePee's to camp in like your cabins! "Build it and they will come" LOL 😊🐎🏇🐴

Haha I LITERALLY just Googled this after watching a bunch of your videos the other day! 👍🤣 I also learned that, early on, the United States Government waged a campaign of mass slaughter of the animals, in their efforts against the livelihoods of the Native populations at the time. So, the Government played a SIGNIFICANT role in the diminishing numbers of Bison in the Great Plains region, where there were once in the tens of millions of animals, dwindling almost entirely to extinction, before fortunately being brought back, slowly, through more recent conservation efforts, like yours. So far, every little bit has help, and there are now an estimated half a million animals of the species on the North American Continent again. Not nearly what it once was, but slowly and steadily increasing nonetheless. Which is why this is one of the few truly worthwhile KZread channels I have ever come across. Because that is so clearly one of its primary motivations. 👍 Edit; BTW, I also learned that "Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo Buffalo." IS, in fact, a grammatically correct sentence. But, don't take MY word for it lol here's an explanation; io9.gizmodo.com/the-most-confusing-sentence-in-the-world-uses-just-one-1669447381

That's tough! I would say they are pretty close to each other. I would say you can taste the leanness of the bison though and it has less fat in it.

I'm Dutch, and as a kid i got taught that they were called bison, so i never knew them as buffalo's (or buffels as we call buffalo's). It actually annoys me whenever i hear them being called buffalo's, because to me, they are so clearly not buffalo's, the Latin name is "Bison Bison" for Pete's sake! haha. But yeah i get it, it's an American thing, ironically which the Europeans started. I did love them from the first time i saw them, they just look cool and they're incredibly tough and nimble. EDIT: Btw, those Woods bison really make me think of Elvis.

I always was taught Bison are from the American plains, with small horns. The native Americans hunted those. Buffalo is like the Water Buffalo, big curly horns.

What did the buffalo say to his son as he was leaving the herd? Bison. (Sorry, I couldn't resist. LOL)

Is there bison anywhere else in the world? Loved the movie. Wish we all could have taken the msg to heart.

Interesting. I always thought buffalo was singular and bison was plural. Thanks for the info. 😁
