Latest Release of Buffalo (American Bison) to Native American Buffalo Caretakers || Tanka Fund

In the Fall of 2022, Tanka Fund worked with ‪@TheNatureConservancy‬ to release 88 buffalo (aka Tatanka, American Buffalo, and American Bison) back to Native lands and in the care of Native American buffalo caretakers - across 10 different native buffalo projects.
Did you know that the buffalo is a keystone species that helps create habitat on the Great Plains for many different species, including grassland birds and even many plant species. As the buffalo forage, they aerate the soil with their hooves, which aids in plant growth, and disperse native seeds, helping to maintain a healthy and balanced ecosystem.
Here are some of the highlights from the buffalo release and interviews with some of our Native American buffalo caretakers.
Tanka Fund continues to drive positive impact on the lands, lives, and economy of Native Americans and the buffalo through meaningful projects that also benefit the larger US land, lives, and economy.
Join us and donate today to support Native American buffalo caretakers and the critical work being done to bring back the buffalo and fight climate change.

This is wonderful! And the perfect antidote to the seemingly endless round of bad news we are subjected to. Here in the UK, the first re-introduction of the European Bison occurred last year. On a much, much smaller scale of course, but still a recognition of the immense value of this keystone species. I wish everybody involved in this project the greatest success and shall follow it's progress with great interest.

I'm so very grateful to see this......... A long time ago in my home state of Oregon there was a place on the coast that was a tourist attraction. This place was not only a tourist attraction but it also served as an educational center in regards to indigenous people. You would follow a trail and around every corner there would be different indigenous dwellings. Towards the end of the trail there was a corral & in the corral was 1 lone buffalo. He or she was one of the last buffalo. This was in the late 1960s. It made me incredibly sad to see this lone creature & I prayed for it that it one day would make a resurgence..........that the plains would be full again of these majestic creatures. I am an old lady now & it fills my eyes with tears of happiness to see that my prayer has come true. ❤️☮️🙏🪶🦬

That woman almost burst out crying, and I myself am sitting here feeling like this is such a blessing for all of humanity because of the meaning of these animals and the healing from all the horror of killing so many and letting Native Americans starve or freeze to death for greed. I was watching what people ate during the dust bowl and could not stop thinking how once the area was taken care of by people and there was plenty to survive on, and then it was ruined and now it is being healed, one step at a time. I also like that they are given grants, because they do not have to be paid back. Something better is there that is not money, but much more. Bravo!

I hope that all Indigenous peoples all the tribes come together and create new life for these amazing animals. the elations is transferred and i could feel my eyes with tears running down my cheeks watching all those buffalo running out of the stock trailer to freedom. I wish all trailers could be doing that with all animals wild and domestic. Live wild live free buffalo and multiply. We all want you to thrive in the wilderness. the spirits have lifted for these peoples. God bless you all for doing this.

Doing something like this on the family and individual level, I think that's where it's at. When you can narrow in on who specifically could use a grant and see how it can help them exponentially grow, I think more strides/wealth/progress can be gained that way. Not to disparage things done at the tribal level, but it's just like with the US gov, people say, "oh, we got to focus more on state level and local politics/issues," - they say that because when things are more direct and specific you can better problem solve a lot of the time. Happy for those families and I wish them much success.
