Lake Como is particularly popular among Americans, Brits and Swiss, whereas Lake Garda is mainly frequented by Germans, Dutch and Eastern Europeans. Lake Garda is on average 20-30% cheaper, but if you are interested in water sports, Lake Garda is the best. The water is also much cleaner and clearer for swimming. Lake Como is the lake frequented by the rich and aristocratic. Lake Como has countless luxurious villas, almost every billionaire or sheikh has a villa there but i strongly prefer Lake Garda is more familiar and offers more outdoor activities. The northern Italians usually go hiking in the Dolomites, they are not lake-lovers like the germans, they prefer to go swimming at sea with a sandy beach in southern Italy or abroad, many also go to Croatia (Istria, Dalmatia). Southern Italians mainly go to the sea on their own shores, a few of them go hiking or abroad, but close to Greece or Egypt. But Italy as a whole has a lot of lakes, in the north anyway, but also in the center and in the south or around Rome.

I just got back from a few nights at Lake Garda, I stayed in Sirmione. I picked Garda over Como because of the thermal waters, Garda seemed to have a lot of spa facilities. I spent a day at Aquaria. The pricing is much more reasonable than similar facilities in USA. So wonderful!

Mum came from Lecco and I have been going there for years ( house and relatives still there). In August and during weekends, the locals will go to their homes in the mountains but you are more likely to see locals out and abroad during market days. I think Bellagio market day is Wed and Sat and is located in the centre of the town near where you get the water buses.

Italians go to the sea, on the Adriatic coast, (Romagna, Puglia), or the Tyrrhenian coast, Sardinia. or in the mountains, to the east, to the Dolomites, (Val Gardena), or to the west, the Piedmontese Alps, Mont Blanc, Mont Rosa.speaking of wich, you have been to Lake Como and you have not seen Villa Oleandra, George Clooney's villa, costing 10 million dollars, where he met his wife Amal. when he is at the villa, they see him on his Harley Davidson traveling on the roads around the lake .

@@waysoftheworld_ if you come back in the summer, go to the Dolomites, they are beautiful. Think that hundreds of millions of years ago, they were the bottom of an ocean. Then the African and European plates collided, and the ground began to rise. And from the ocean the Dolomites were formed. 3000 meter mountains where there are remains of ancient coral reefs and geological remains of marine animals is quite rare, right? The food is not typical Italian, but is close to the Austrian-German one. if you like the mountains go to the Dolomites, you won't regret it.

@@marcpel8310 However, only 1/4 of the Dolomites are in the purely Ladin-speaking area (Badia, Val Gardena), the rest is in Veneto and Trentino (Fassa Valley, or Brenta also Trentino and in the province of Belluno Cortina (Cadore, Veneto) where the food is very Italian, but even in Badia you are more likely to see German vacationers drinking a Spritz than a bavarian wheat beer.

Hi! In Lake Garda we stayed in a town called Moniga Del Garda the whole time, and moving around was a pain in the butt. We do not recommend moving around as much as we did. We only did it for research ;) Our guide will help you plan every detail of your trip, here's the link in case you want to check it out: creative-producer-4467.ck.page/products/ultimate-lake-garda-travel-guide | Whatever you decide, just know that Lake Garda is enormous! So just try to commit to either the north side or the south side of the lake. This way it'll be a lot easier to move in between towns. Hope this helps!

Yes, even though they are more expensive than other parts of Italy, it does not compare to places like Cinqueterre or the Amalfi coast. There are definitely affordable options if you book in advance and visit in the shoulder season :) And yes, if you're flying, Milan would be the closest airport. If you're going to Garda, then Venice is the closest major international airport ;) I'm sending you the PDFs right now that we finally have internet again! Happy Thanksgiving by the way ❤
