UPDATE I'm not sure why I didn't catch this sooner, but the math on the Arteza set is wrong! The price per tube for this particular set is actually $0.91 per tube, I'm not sure what happened but clearly I did my math wrong somewhere! I did also see that the price for the Arteza set is fluctuating frequently, so apologies if this info is no longer up to date, I am just going by the price that it was when this video was uploaded! Thank you all so much for watching and supporting, I hope this video helps you and I hope you enjoy!

I feel like the fact that not all gouache is completely opaque at a higher quality was ignored... Arteza, Holbein, and other brands like W&N, Schminke, etc, all list opacity on each tube of gouache because it varies from color to color based on pigment types, including natural vs synthetic. Holbein is one of those brands where a little goes a long way, you’re supposed to water them down. I think a fair test would be to water them each down to the same consistency and use CYM colors for primary. And also take into account the level of opacity for each color, if you want to test opacity, pick the same or similar colors, and only one color. Like carmine or yellow ochre. Dark blues and greens will usually be more transparent, and the more white mixed into the paint, the more opaque it will be. Holbein tries to mix as little white into natural pigments as possible while still getting it to a good opacity. Also maybe test the dry texture, some brands dry more chalky than velvety.

My biggest problem with the Holbein wasn’t necessarily the opacity, it was the texture of the paint coming out of the tube. The texture varied quite a bit from each color, it didn’t feel consistent and felt like I was using a different brand each time I tried a color. I may not have personally enjoyed the opacity of Holbein, but I think that it flopped because of the inconsistencies in the paint itself. Still, it’s all just my opinion and this video is just to help some people establish a baseline of where they should start when starting out with or purchasing gouache 😁

@@allyvineart574 I think maybe it’s just because they weren’t fresh tbh. I have an 18 set of 5ml Holbein gouache and if you dont use it for a while the paint closest to the opening of the tube will be a little dry. Also, because of the varying types of pigments used, no gouache company can really have a fully consistent line of gouache colors unless they’re all made with synthetic pigments. Arteza has creamer paints at the get go because the ratio of pigment to binder to filler leans more towards the latter 2. Holbein leans more towards pigment trying to not put as much filler. A good middle ground between the two brands is Windsor and Newton, when you open the tubes, a little bit of the filler is usually gathered at the top, but the paint is pretty consistent across most of their colors, the difference is they have a little more white mixed in to give a higher range of opaque colors.

I feel like you didnt give the HIMI a proper chance since you didnt reactivate them. I believe they would be opaque with one layer, but not when you used them like a dry watercolor palette.

Just wanted to mention that’s that not how you reactivate Himi gouache. You need to leave a good amount of water in there and mix it around with a toothpick - it’ll go back to normal consistency

One thing you forgot to factor in is that the Himi and Arrtx are both 30ml cups while the others are all 12ml tubes... So technically the Himi and Arrtx would be cheapest at .66 cents for 15ml... but you can't buy them that way... just something I noticed. lol

Just a heads up that when mixing primary colors, try to avoid the RGB combo, since these are additive colors & tend to get muddy bc they behave as if you're adding color to black. Subtractive colors CMY (cyan, magenta, yellow) start off white and filter out certain color spectrums reflected from light. The way our eyes naturally work actually follows the CMYK process. In fact, all video media, prints, & paints follow CMYK too. So the next time you do this test, try to go for a combo of magenta (or alazarin crimson), cyan (or cerulean), and yellow (cadmium-free yellow or lemon yellow). Btw you can always add Zinc White (aka Mixing White/Chinese White) to add opacity without desaturating them too much. Zinc White has 1/10th the saturation of Titanium White (which is chalky, but useful if you're trying to make pastel colors). Anywho I'm holding off on buying gouache for now, since Zinc White mixed in with watercolors make them almost opaque like gouache (and watercolors have way more color variety). I just wanted to know if the gouache from Holbein was opaque enough to buy their ZW. But after this video, I think I'll just buy a tube of Arteza instead. Thanks for the review!

I tried my best to get the CMY colors, but those were the closest colors I could get with the sets that I have unfortunately. I know its not perfect, but the primaries were used just to give an idea of the overall functionality of each set, and to keep things a bit more consistent. I did not know about the Zinc White trick, I will definitely need to look into this! I'll definitely need to see how it works with watercolors as well, like you mentioned, it seems interesting! The Holbein gouache was definitely not something I'd necessarily recommend, especially for the price. I'm glad that this video helped you in making a decision, thanks for the tips, I appreciate them and your support! 😁

Holbein and Windsor & Newton and other professional quality are worth itl get the real Cadmiums and Cobalt/Ceruleans for better opacity. Titanium White vs Zinc.

Lovely video! For a fair comparison of price, it makes more sense to compare the price per milliliter in stead of per tube. Not all tubes contain the same amount of paint. Thanks for making this! Really useful.

  • @glowatyourownpace

Maybe consider breaking the price down by ounces because the tubes and cups are all a different amount of ounces so that would affect the cost.

    It should be done by ml, since the tubes barely makes an ounce. So for each one... Arteza ($0.91/12 ml tube) = 8 ¢/ml Masters Touch ($0.84/12 ml tube) = 7 ¢/ml Himi ($1.33/30 ml cup) = 4 1/2 ¢/ml Artxx ($1.33/30 ml cup) = 4 1/2 ¢/ml Holbein ($3.66/5ml tube) = 73 ¢/ml

Yellow tends to be not opaque because of the nature of it's pigments. Holbein does not add whitener like chalk to their colors so that's why some colors are not opaque by it's nature :)

Heads up, For the arrtx jelly gouache, people say that the gouache does not have the pigment code for it. There is a code for each colour and its on the card where there are colors swatches on it. The type is very small that most people don't see.
