Which Fast Jag Should You Buy | Jaguar XK vs F-TYPE Comparison | Rivals Showdown

Ойындар

The question of which high performance Jaguar sports car/GT car is a valid one, despite the XK and F-Type bringing quite different advantages and strengths to the table. In particular when many of their used prices and in most cases much of their intended use fall into a similar realm, it begs the question of which approach better suits what you are looking for in a car.
One being an elegant and physically larger GT car, with 2 plus 2 seating and longer distance driving blended with cruising being its main appeal, and the other being a more compact and muscular pure sports car, with a wildly different selection of engines, a crucial difference in driving style thanks to AWD options, and with perhaps a more youthful vibe to its character.
So with all of this in mind, which car should you buy, the Jaguar XK, or Jaguar F-Type? Let's head out on the road and find out...

I've owned my XKR now for about 8 years. It is my daily driver, and I have over 180,000 miles on her. It is a 2010 5.0L car. In over 52 years of driving and at least 30 cars owned, without question, the XKR is the best automobile I've ever owned. Quick, luxurious, elegant, fun when you want it. I've had mine on the track dozens of times over the years. It never complains or skips a beat, and is one of the most reliable cars I've ever had. I;ve driven the f-type and thoroughly enjoyed the four days I had a V8S convertible, and I'd probably like to add an R coupe to my collection someday, but I prefer the XKR for many of the reasons you mentioned in the video. And if you've never felt the rush that comes from mashing the pedal to the floor of the 5.0L supercharged V8 in either the XKR or the F-type, you should try it sometime. It is thrilling! Either car will make a wonderrul purchase.

This was a great comparison. I'm currently in the process of buying a more sporting Jag after selling my XJ. I've gone back and forth on the F-Type vs XK and I think I'm leaning toward the XK for the same reasons you define: comfort, space, luggage capacity, overall refinement.

I'm a xkr owner and had a testdrive with the F-type. Lovely machine in a stunning white color....but it feels to me claustrofobic with the cockpit ending straight after me. So I stick to my lovely grey xkr with space for extra luggage etc.

I have an 07 XKR convertible with 70k miles. Every time I get out of it I turn around to admire the lines - so full of perfect curves. Seems to have one mechanical issue per year on average - fuel pump, top mechanism, etc. but I wouldn't trade it for anything.

I've owned an X100 XK and a 2002 (4.2 X100) XKR, currently own a 2008 (4.2 X150) XK R. I've loved them all in their own ways, driving each always feels "special". Its good to see that the X100 is finally becoming generally recognized as the classic that owners always knew it really is, but The X150 has far superior driving and handling experience so is a lot more fun on the road. Before you decide that the X100 looks better, know that there's a weird thing with the X150 shape, it always looks a lot better in person than any camera can capture. At least to my eyes, both for the X100 and X150, the pre-facelift shape is purer so more timeless/better, while the facelifted versions look dated now. X100 had several issues in the 2 years I owned it, but the X150 remains faultless after 12ish years of ownership. The simple secret with all Jags (as with most other high-end brands) is to keep up with the maintenance schedule at a dealer or specialist, and never cheap out on it with jiffylube oil etc. Look after it and it will look after you.

Thanks for the video - well balanced and spot on. I use my XK for most journeys but it comes into its own on long ones. On a continental trip, a friend had an F-Type and, after 200 miles, his wife complained about the noise and discomfort, so I swapped and she joined my wife in our XK. I found the F-type to be noisy and the seats were very hard but the ride was OK because we were on motorways. At the next stop, she didn't want to get back into the F-Type...he sold the car soon afterwards. It's a real shame that Jaguar don't make a GT anymore and it's a shame they spoilt the ride of the 5.0L with harder springs to make it faster around the Nurburgring!

Great vid, once again! I'm still set on an XKR, and I think this video affirms that even more. I'd love to spend some time in an F-Type, but I think there's far more longevity in owning an XK, in terms of getting to use it in more situations. That idea of a 'weekend car' to me seems appealing at first, but quickly falls flat when you'd find yourself having to wait for a chance to use it!

Excellent comparison. On size, also worth observing the XK is narrower in width which increases the practicality about town and on narrower roads. Inside I wouldn’t mind having a few of those nice hand adjusted buttons from the f type as the XK touchscreen is fiddly.

I live in the US (Michigan) and (have) own(ed) three Jag GTs -- (1) 1989 XJS V12 VandenPlas Coupe (purchased in 1994; sold in 1997, because mechanic wrecked it!); (2) 2003 XK8 Convertible (purchased in 2005; still own it today -- great mechanic!); and (3) 2014 XK Coupe (purchased in 2017; still own today). Before purchasing the 2014 XK Coupe, I considered an F-Type (both Coupe and Convertible). Could not get over the bad interior colors/design available on all of the F-Types. The XK wins hands down (unless, of course, you like a totally BLACK interior -- YUCK!) Also, your review re: "drivability over long distances" F-Type vs XK is spot on. We have driven both the XK8 Convertible and the XK on several 500-1,000 mile+ trips -- both have been GREAT! I do like the F-Types, but yorurreview is spot on -- not even enough room in the trunk for4 a trip to the b each at Lake Michigan!

Interesting vid. I owned a 2016 F-Type base and sold it after a year’s experience. I chose the base in the first place over the AWD S for a couple of reasons. I’m old school, in that, the more complicated a car, the higher the cost of maintenance. Additionally, I wasn’t planning on driving the car in the winter, tracking the vehicle or speeding along during a torrential downpour, i.e., what would be the purpose of AWD? Regarding the horse power advantage of an S or even R, meh….. if you’re not tracking the car, you have essentially unusable power with which simply to boast or earn points on your license... As well, for me, the ridiculous over the top sound of the S and especially R exhaust was embarrassingly showy. If you need that much attention, wear a pinky ring while chomping on a Cuban cigar, Maui Joe sunglasses in place, driving a Cadillac XLR with an aftermarket exhaust….. be that guy. Better yet, save money and purchase a Dodge Charger or Dodge Ram Pick-up, obnoxious small pee pee noise out the ying yang. My biggest peeve and I was guilty of falling prey, purchasing an automatic transmission. Again, being old school, if one is going to call a car a “sports car”, it HAS TO HAVE A MANUAL TRANSMISSION, otherwise it’s for all intents and purposes a GT in sports car sheep’s clothing. So what did I replace the F-Type with? An actual sports car, a 69 E-Type FHC in BRG/biscuit, thrilling beyond thrilling. And for a daily driver? I selected an 07 XK (same color combination as the E-Type…. I’m sentimental like that…). If I had a larger garage, I admit, I’d make room for an F-type but only the 2014 base model with a manual transmission and likely in convertible form even though it’s far more spectacular looking in coupe form. And that is one man’s useless but humorous take on that topic….

in 2018 I bought a 2004 X-Type for £2,000; in 2022 I added a 2010 XKR supercharged for £17,000. The X-Type is a great car with space in the boot and the cabin, All Wheel Drive and Manual gears and a delight to drive, but the XKR just puts a smile on my face. But it is my first rear-wheel drive and my first automatic. Huge differences, but both lovely; I just wouldn't tow a trailer tent with the XKR!! In terms of reliability, they are both temperamental. but mendable -so far! The XKR has truly great performance; I worry that if I sneezed, I would find it going 20mph faster: Now I have two cars for life!

I"ve been waiting for such a video for some time. The XK is way more practical. As an F Type driver, it truly can be classified as a weekend toy. But the sound and looks makes it worthwhile. Prior to the F type's launch and then Jaguar canning the XK, the XK was the one I was after. Even now, it stands out. Neither car can be faulted. It's two vastly different designs, sizes meant for different applications. I'd have both - the XK for the weekend and F Type for the weekend. That said, I heard Jaguar is looking to revive the XK - any truth to that. BTW, your videos are really good. I like the factual presentation and no nonsense approch

As the owner of several X100s and X150s over the decades, there is absolutely no question that the X150 is a superior car in every measurable way. Looks are subjective, so I'm leaving that out of my equation. X150 suspension on an X100 would require a complete redesign of the car and when you're done, you're still stuck with that vastly inferior and very flexible by comparison steel chassis. If you prefer the looks of the X100, get one and be happy. But know it will never, ever be hold a candle to an X150 when it comes to function. Since you mention the suspension swap, here's a tidbit for you to chew on... Through the grace and friendship of the owner of our local Jaguar dealer, I've been able to confirm with my own hands and eyes that the AWD X152 front knuckles bolt up to X150 control arms, and if the X150 and donor X152 are both 5.0L variants, so will the front diff, front subframe, oil pan, transfer case and transmission. You're on your own for the wiring and rear driveshaft, though. ;)
