Thanks for the informative review. One thing that the Cambridge does better than the other ones is it has a 'Contents' list at the bottom left which allows you to look very quickly for the specific one definition you want. If you search for words like 'get' or 'go' which have loads of definitions by themselves, you will be thankful for such navigation pane so you don't have to scroll all the way down. Longman will be prefect if it has such feature.

This is such a great coincidence, I have been relying on Oxford or McMillian physical dicts for decades up to my post grad years and working life. I will be doing a professional course and I have been looking online dicts that have all what Longman and Lexico would provide. Thank you so much for the information.

Another feature can be included in tests which is important for me is the simplicity and plainness of the definitions. In some dictionaries you have to look up 3-4 more words to understand the definition of the intended word. It's better to have the definitions composed with common words as much as possible and not to have readers to lookup more words (those more words can require also other jumps). I have used Macmillian dictionary for years, because of the simplicity of their definitions, but sadly they have closed their online dictionary service 6 months ago.

Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary is by far the best dictionary of upper-intermediate/Advanced learners of English. I love Longman dictionary because it has a simple thesaurus and everyday English use section besides it contain almost all the vocabulary in English. I tried to find a good thesaurus but I couldn't find better than Lexico thesaurus. I believe that Lexico/Oxford dictionary and Merriam Webster are made for native English speakers not of ESL learners. Personally, I use OALD and LDOCE dictionaries.

Thanks for sharing. As a teacher of English I have collected and been using many dictionaries. What you remarrked about Merriam Webster is true, like any other American dictionaries which claim they are dictionaries of the American language, they donot feel the need to add the British meanings and pronunciation. I used to have the Oxford Learners as an app, however, if I want to consult the pronunciation, it always requirres me to oay for the app. I used to use The Cambridge where it allows me to take notes and make my own collections. Presently I have three apps on my cell phone, the Longman, the Meriam Webster, and Offline Dictionary of Enhlish, the last one is useful when I cannot be online. And at your recommendation, I just installed Lexico. Thanks again for your video.

I did a study of which of the two dictionaries is the best. Both dictionaries are real good but I seem to prefer Longman. I have noticed somе of the words I am looking for are missing either in Longman or in Oxford. I wonder if it makes any sense to buy Longman's dictionary in paper form, because it will be more convenient for me to use it. Where can I buy this dictionary? I want to buy in the latest edition.

Lexico is also partly owned/published by Oxford University Press, so they aren't so far apart. EDIT: having looked at this in more detail (in response to many commenters talking about OALD), I think OALD is somewhere between Lexico and Longman. It's more detailed than Lexico, which might be useful, but not as information-rich as Longman. They're all good dictionaries IMO, so if you're happy with one or the other, then I don't see why you would need to change.

I didn't include the OED because it isn't available online for free - only with a subscription (at least, at the time when I made this). Lexico belongs to Oxford University Press, so it has some relation to other Oxford dictionaries. EDIT: Sorry, did you mean OED or OALD? There are too many dictionaries :) Many people in comments are mentioning OALD, which I've looked at briefly and also seems like a good choice.

OED = Oxford English Dictionary, the original printed Oxford dictionary. OALD = Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, which I guess is what you were referring to. I didn't look at apps, just websites, so I can't make specific recommendations. Maybe in another video :)
