There is one important category he leaves out that I would like to see and that's longevity/durability. Like use the top rated tools around his shop and make a video a year later revisiting the tools and any issues that came up from prolonged use. For instance, the harbor freight grinder may run faster than a DeWalt, but if it can't handle that power and burns up after less than an hour of run time, that would be very helpful info

I'm sure just like any grinding wheel you would have to true up the wheel cause after so many drills being sharpened on the drill doctor it will develop an uneven surface on the wheel. Coming from a retired machinist of 40 years in the trade. I've learned to sharpen my drill bits by hand on a regular beanch grinder from 1/32" to well over 1" in size. Have a blessed day 🙏 sir

As a machinist of 30+ years I have never used a drill bit sharpener. It was neat to see all the different sharpeners and them being used, but I think I'll just stick with my pedestal grinder, a drill gage and a my steady hands to sharpen my drills!

I'm in the same position as you, but sharpened my first drill bit only 20 years ago. I worked in a shop with auto lathes pumping out house fittings and stuff non stop- it was a GREAT test of your sharpening skill as you could easily measure number of holes drilled AND some of the holes had a tight tolerance and so any uneven sharpening was picked up. I'm certain some of these sharpeners lacked the ability to properly centre the point!

22 years ago, I made a drill gauge in my highschool shop class. My teacher at the time (I kid you not, his name was Mr. Mann) said I'll never need anything but that gauge and a bench grinder. I still use it today.

Same here i bought the first Drill Doctor when it first came out I'm still using it today i never pick up the art of sharping drill bits by hand .. My father knew how to do it and he had one eyeball to see from tiny drill bits to 1 inch razor sharp and lasted a long time but no insult to injury if a drill bit broke in half he would make a brand new drill bit out of the broken drill bit again like brand new

@@jaakkopontinen Sometimes you need a very stubby bit to get into a tight space. With the drill sharpener you can cut the bit off and put a new cutting edge on the shortie!

@@mac24seven They are very popular throughout Latin America, though most of their stuff is made in China and only branded Truper; I've seen their recent incursions into the brushless tool market. It's impressive, they went from 90s era drills and saws to competitive brushless in less than a year.

Even more useful to me than determining the best of all the options out there is giving the most affordable options a chance. $28 for like-new performance is a bargain! Thanks again Todd, and all the best :)

Been using the Drill Doctor since they first came out. Always does a good job. But as a former machinist, if I am in a hurry, I am going to the grinder and free handing it instead of dragging out another machine and setting it up to sharpen one drill bit

Nice. Just a longer term comment. I’ve had that drill doctor for more than 5 years. I use it for metalwork on a lathe and drill-press mostly. I do tend to mess with the lip geometry in the +and - slots like you did at 135 but for 118. This determines how aggressive the bits are. There is a little bit of a learning curve to it but with steel you know if you did it right in a hurry. A properly sharpened bit can go through many inches of steel where a mistake can’t make it through 1/8” steel. And split points are where it’s at.

Do you not find that the drills you sharpen on the drill doctor cut slightly oversized on the lathe? I had that problem with mine which is why I eventually retired it. If you watch when boring a hole the swarf off one flute will be slightly thicker than the other or worse it only cuts on one flute, I think of they made a better drill holder collet it wouldn't have the problem

@@weldchip if you grind uneven this happens. I either count the time per side or spark the wheel out so it’s not cutting either flute anymore to get even chips. I generally don’t rely on a drill bit to be better than 1/64th. If I need a hole that tight I ream or bore it. I use one of those hf drill indexes that have every size known to mankind to always have something close but undersized and a small set of reamers for common sizes. Oh and regarding the collet yea that can be a little fiddly to get it seated in there just so. Shimmy it around while you tighten and don’t overtighten.

@@weldchip For precision work you need a grinder with a proper guide. Most of these sharpeners are nowhere near good enough for machine work. There are good ones, but they are expensive. See Aboms videos on sharpening with a grinder.

I guess if we're getting down that far into things I wouldn't turn these as Precision sharpeners. If you're looking for precision it's time to break out the boring bar I would think. I just use drill bits to get to the rough shape or if I'm just making a bushing or a washer or some other nonsense like that I don't worry about it but if I'm trying to hit close tolerances best believe it's going to be from a boring bar.

I bought a Drill Doctor off my neighbor for $10--looked like he'd never used it. It sat on my garage shelf for years, until a few weeks ago when I was desperate--trying and failing to drill 1/2" holes in steel, late at night for something I needed done the following morning. In desperation, I went to the Doctor--and it performed like a champ!

Thanks Todd. Great video. I’ve had a drill doctor for so long, it costs twice more now than what I paid back when. They sent me a new diamond grinding wheel about four years ago. Good company. I sharpen all my bits once a year, or when I trash one. Nice thing about drilldoctor, it lets me know if the bit is already sharp so I don’t waste time.

Great video! Those screwdrivers that have an interchangeable internal shafts are anywhere from 7 in 1 to 14 in 1. Some ratchet, some don't. I'd suggest testing those, because I'm curious about what the advantages or disadvantages might be, and if money means anything when making a selection.

Hard to beat the value of a $1.99 Harbor Freight multi screwdriver. The metal is actually good.

I have literally no need for a drill sharpener, but I will say as someone who has destroyed and thrown away so many drill bits while drilling out rusted hardened bolts, this has been fascinating to watch. I'm sure I could have saved a lot of money in the past using these sharpeners. Alas, with the advent of electric cars and a deadly combination of kids, I have no idea of energy to tinker with old car projects. But really enjoyed watching this while thinking of all the broken studs I had to drill out so I could finish putting the car back together on a school/work night.

the drill doctor works great especially making split point ends. I used the older model of the drill doctor when putting up my steel building and had to drill a few hundred holes in gauge metal and they would dull after a while but after a few min on the sharpener they were better than new. the drill doctor paid for itself a few times just on that job. great video

This was a great side by side comparison as all are. The only factor not comparable was durability of the sharpener itself. I can personally attest. I used the Drill Doctor at work for over 15yrs. I personally sharpened thousands of drill bits. We never had an issue with the unit. I did replace the sharpening stone after 12yrs of service. For the money I believe they have the best system hands down.

​@@ProjectFarmyeah it takes a bit more work to dial in to the correct angles and the scale on the flute setter isn't great but once you get it dialed in it cuts the drill point and flutes way more accurately than the drill doctor by a significant margin and is way more repeatable/faster. It's real downfall is the flute setter, the cutting edge should be aligned with the flats on the collet holder or it will produce a point that is too wide in the webb. One down fall of the machine is the motor uses metal shielded bearings, if you don't clean it out enough then grinding dust will kill the bearing on the shaft end of the motor, I have the larger model of this machine and had to swap out the motor bearing, I went for a rubber sealed bearing this time as they hold up better to fine dust. With anything Chinese it's not perfect but with modified scales, drill setter and better sealed bearing you won't get a more accurate drill sharpener for the money.

This video is very timely. Just a couple of days ago, I was drilling a bunch of holes in some mild steel and the bit started wearing out. After every few holes, I used my old first-generation Drill Doctor to sharpen the bit. It was working great until it suddenly wasn’t. Looking at the tip geometry, it was way off and putting a small bevel on the leading edge. I couldn’t figure out why, so I freehanded it on a bench grinder for the remaining holes. It got me thinking it was time for a new drill sharpener and I looked at this channel to see if there was a recommendation. A day later, here it is! Thank you, Todd!

If you are in the market for a new sharpener, I would look at the mrcm mr 20g or one that does larger if you need it. I bought that one and it is superior to the drill doctor in every single way. Depends on how you plan to make your money back though and the rate at which you use them.

I have a Drill Doctor. It was given to me by a fellow who didn't care for it. He sharpened bits by hand. I used it a few times--CANNOT stand the noise it makes. And I simply don't care to fiddle with it, the set-up is a okay once you've done it a few times, but damn the noise. Db readings are appreciated every time you take them, but I do know already what sort of racket the DD makes. cheers!

I was biased going into this as I’ve got a drill dr that’s probably 25-30 yrs old. I note that many of the products used similar approaches just implemented differently. Only so many ways to grind metal I guess. However I was very pleased to see how well less expensive options performed. yea total tools has them 750X is $599 and 500X is $489.. crazy expensive. Might be cheaper to buy in USA and use shipito to send to australia. The 500X version is also basically teh same as 750X except it doesn't do as many angles on bits. just the popular ones 118-135

I my grandpa taught me how to sharpen bits on a bench grinder. I've tried a few different sharpeners, but I have found I can still sharpen them better by hand. @@H4K4N Get some nasty old bits from a garage sale, or from your local used site online, and practice with those. It takes time and patience to get good at it. Even if you spend 20 minutes a day practising, you'll be good at it in no time!

Years ago I shopped around for the best deal on a Doctor. Searched and searched and finally won one on eBay. The very next month, Drill Doctor came out with their updated version! Grrrrr! It still does the job, though I can sharpen a small bit (

I'll use a Drill Doctor for 3/16" and below. A bench grinder with a drill sharpening gauge works best. Most of those others are a waste of time and money. Great Video!!

Great video. I’ve owned a Drill Dr for years but never removed from its box. Now that you’ve demonstrated it’s use I think I’ll use it 😂 I’d like to see a test of emergency radios, solar, crank etc. We’ve experienced wild variations in function and quality. Mostly very disappointing. We’ve owned several C. Crane products but bad customer service when troubles arise.

That’s a great suggestion I second that one. And you really gotta use your drill doctor. There is a little bit of a learning curve to get the feel for how to use it, but believe me once you do, you wonder how you ever live without it. I had a pile of bits that literally belong to my father and I ran them through the drill doctor, and they run like new.

I've always just free hand sharpened by eye using a common bench grinder. The drill bits are used for field work so nothing requiring a high degree of precision like machining. This method works fine for me but is dependent on having a good eye and hand motor control.

Another great video, Todd. I remember the first "drill sharpener" I saw was a Craftsman attachment for a bench grinder purchased by my dad in the mid-1970's and it was awful. From then on I always sharpened on a bench grinder by eye and got pretty good at it. But now at 62, my eyes are not the same so it's good to see there's actually an effective solution. Thanks!

I knew there had to another one us. My son is a rising Seminole Jr. Huge Drill Dr. fan. Family run business in Oregon. They are also the Work Sharp people.

It would be interesting to measure the holes to see if the sharpeners maintain the hole size or if the point is off-center and oversizes the hole. Great video. When are you going to test hand held belt sanders and pole saws?

Agreed. Even if it does a fast job but the hole isn’t to spec, makes that one worth less and maybe worthless.

Very nice! One thing not covered is accuracy of hole diameter. (how equal to center the two sides of the bit are ground.) If the center of rotation is off center of the drill blank due to inequal grinding the hole will be oversize. Another thing is the type of grinding wheel. The stone wheels will only sharpen a relatively small number of bits correctly compared to the drill doctor with the diamond wheel.

Yep I said the same thing. As a machinist correct hole size diameter is paramount, the prescion does a much better job than the drill doctor on cutting an even point/flutes/web when properly setup.

The level of thoroughness is unbelievable. Love this dude's videos.

Not really. Didn't even use a drill gage to show how centered the tip is. Or does it drill oversize after sharpening. Etc etc.

I know this suggestion may not make a lot of sense at first but hear me out. I wanna see laundry detergent tested side by side. Especially for their ability to remove grass, dirt, and oil stains since those are so common in farm and shop work (blood and wine/fruit stains are also common measurements I think). Not sure if it is a good idea for views but it would be awesome to see what testing methods you could pull off and would GREATLY influence what I would buy in the future. Great video as always BTW!

Good to see this comparison. I haven't seen some of these brands. I've used the drill doctor for almost 10 years now. I mainly drill stainless steel, which is tough on bits. HSS bits just don't last and need constant sharpening. Switched to cobalt bits and they last MUCH longer. The split-point bits make a big difference on cutting speed too.

@@jeffshackleford3152 I bought the Ridgid Coldfire Cobalt 14 piece kit from Home Depot. It's the only cobalt bits I've used. Doesn't look like HD has them anymore. I've had to re-sharpen them a few times over the years with a drill dr and I've only broken a couple of the smaller bits, less than 1/8". It's been a dang good kit that's drilled several hundred holes in stainless and mainly by just 3 bits out of the kit.

How are you doing today? I am doing pretty good myself. I just would like to say thank-you for getting to another one of my video ideas. I love all the great work and the great information that you have provided in the making of this video. I would like to see you try testing: stone chisels to find out which manufacturers are the best. I hope that you and your family take care until next time.

Great review! Not surprised the PreAsion end mill sharpener did so well, since it has a lot of other serious tasks it needs to handle. I guess Drill Doctor still kind of leads the pack after all these years!

I love your videos, great work and keep them coming! I have a video suggestion. Last year I bought a couple flip up hand held work lights from Amazon and they are very handy. The one complaint I have is that the magnetic base is pretty weak and will not stick well to surfaces that are not completely flat/clean. When working under cars in real life it is nearly impossible to find a surface they will stick to and light the area I need lit. It would be nice if they had stronger magnets and USBC instead of micro usb for charging. My suggestion is to do a comparison of inexpensive work lights. I paid $20 for a pair of these lights.

🤔 Great testing and review, Todd. On the subject of sharpening drill bits, I had an uncle who was a master welder and he learned to hand-grind multiple facet geometry into his drill bits, which he swore were superior to conical ground bits. When he started out as a machinist in the 1930s, he sometimes had to work without electricity and he was always looking for any trick he could use to reduce the effort needed to drill steel by hand. He also claimed the multi-faceted bits would outlast conical-ground bits by a large margin. Sadly, hand-grinding of multiple facet bits seems to be a lost art, but there are modern jigs that make 4 facet bits easy to grind, like the DBS-22. I don't know if there are any that will do a 6 facet bit, which is supposed to be even better. It would be interesting to compare multiple facet drill bits produced with the DBS-22 with the conical ground conventional bits produced by the Drill Doctor and other sharpeners to see if what my uncle said was true.

I work in a machine shop with an older guy (72 years young) who has seen and done everything in our industry. Owned his own shop for 30 years, and really only works now because he genuinely enjoy the craft. He regularly free grinds 4 faceted drill points out on everything from a bench grinder, to belt sander, even with our disc sander. Whenever he's doing it I always ask him to sharpen up a few of mine. The genuinely cut better than any result I've ever gotten, that's for sure.

Outstanding test and I really enjoyed the comparison between 135 degree and 118 degree bits.

Another great video. a couple years back I bought around a hundred used drill bits at a garage sale for just a couple of bucks. I looked at a lot of sharpeners. A lot of them were expensive, and the cheap ones didn't seem very reliable. I was leaning toward a system I could attack to my bench grinder. These were also expensive. I decided to make a couple of wooden triangles at the proper angles to use the side of my grinder's wheels. I made a groove in the center to hold the bits. These are very fast and accurate for sharpening. They cost me nothing but my time and ingenuity.

Firstly: I love this channel. Todd does the testing that the rest of us can't afford to do, so that we can spend our money wisely. I'm sure he has saved tradesmen countless dollars over the years simply by showing which tools are junk. Secondly: I find it interesting that there was no Makita, DeWalt, or Milwaukee sharpener. Why are non of the big-name brands offering a tool that their customers would surely love to have?

I already have the Drill Doctor, just watched this video to see how it performed. And it is well worth the price if you ask me. Of courses I also waited until it was on sale to get it. But I feel it would still be worth it at full price.

Totally agree. He makes Consumer Reports look like a chump, and it doesn't cost us anything.

I've had my original Drill Doctor for about 20+ years now. I've replaced the chuck once and now it appears that there is other wear that make it time to replace. My original only did up to 1/2" but now seeing this review I am going to spend the money and get the 750. It might be expensive but I got over 20 years out of my first one and believe me, I did a ton of bit sharpening in those 20+ years. One of my favorite tools.

When I worked at a machine shop and a drill got too dull, we had a 3 step process. 1. Order 1-2 replacements from our vendor 2. While we were waiting, try to sharpen on the bench grinder and finish the last few holes 3. Throw the bit away I think the Drill Doctor would have been a better option. Thank you for reviewing these tools. Your videos are the best.

We've had that Drill doctor for years and at this point it has definitely paid for itself. Those 135 degree split points are almost worth doing to new drill bits. Just for fun I once took a snapped 1/2 drill bit and reshaped it with the drill Doctor and we still have and use that drill bit now (though it's a bit shorter than it used to be)

I've learned tricks to sharpen drill bits with a grinder but the results of one of these are very convenient and obviously more accurate and yesterday i was thinking about these only to find out your video today. Guess even the cheapest can help me out considering i ruin drill bits like they're nothing. One thing to point out is sharpening drill bits successfully is heavily based on their quality, usually it's heat from using wrong rpm vs material that ruins their hardness and even if you sharpen them they don't last, most times drill bits of better quality are more heat resistant because of their composition and cleaner metal alloys than generic recycled chinese ones so if you use them properly and sharpen them they can last forever as long you don't brake them. I appreciate a lot the effort you put in your videos, you are one of the kind.

Awesome video once again thanks so much for your diligent testing of different products. A couple of suggestions to the testing and and assessment aspects of this test. I think using a cutting oil or any sort of oil to reduce heat would have been beneficial and I think bit durability (how long it stays sharp and cuts well) is one of the most important factors. Maybe 5 cuts in a row timing each one using oil might reflect using a drill press and batch drilling. Just my suggestions thanks again for an awesome video.

A couple of other things to evaluate. Hole diameter and is it out of round. And since this is on a drill press, is the hole out of vertical, should be perfectly perpendicular to the metal plate being drilled. The uniformity of that metal being drilled might be a factor - thicker or thinner in spots leads to faster or slower times.

I have had a drill doctor since they supplied a VHS tape with them for instruction. I have had inconsistent results with it, the bits look textbook sharp when done but don't cut as well as I think they should. I appreciate this video, I need to lock myself in the shop with it this coming winter and sort it out.

Great video, was actually planning to buy a bit sharpener and a circular saw blade sharpener this weekend. At least now I can make a more informed decision. I'd love to see more videos on camping equipment. Your folding saw videos were great. i'm specifically thinking camping stoves, pans, maybe even paracord.

The drill doctor was recommended by a cabinet shop that goes through a lot of drills! I needed to either buy 30 drills or sharpen 5...I chose the drill doctor and used 5 milwaukee cobalt drills! It took a few minutes to figure it out and I also watched a youtube video too! I also sharpened my 3 index drill sets and several neighbors drills too! I love it and it has served me well! It comes with an extra grinder stone but after hundreds of drills I don't know when I will have to change it! Great video!!!

The Drill Doctor I had was an older model but it served me very well. I did a lot of 135 degree split point drilling in my work for the speed using drill jigs.

I have to admit that I've never used a drill bit sharpener. I throw my dull bits into a drawer in my tool chest and the supply just keep growing. I've thought about getting a drill bit sharpener, but so far I haven't. So this video is great, because I know which sharpeners will do a good job and also how much I have to spend on one. The chart at the end is fantastic. I choose my budget and find the best sharpener in that price or lower. Another great video! Thanks for the hard work.

It was my job as a child (apprentice) in the shop to use a bench grinder and sharpen the dull drills. It was actually a valuable time learning about sharpness, angles, and relief. But sharpening with a bench grinder, while possible, does not equal perfection. I bought a Drill Doc a few years ago. Awesome review! Thank you
