    There have been numerous studies in schools that switched to a more plant based school lunch. They found that not only did behavior problems decrease among the students but their test scores also increased.

    The best results are coming from countries like France and Finland, but they are going from good to great. Here in the US we are struggling to go from bad to good.     Interesting, can you link these numerous studies? .. because there is definitely data supporting whole food keto diets in this context, especially in Special Ed environments where the impact on autism spectrum can be life changing

    @@Samuel-bu7xr I don't have links to the studies on hand, I studied psychology in college and we had looked at a few of such studies while discussing nature vs nurture in the context of childhood development and behavior. That was over a decade ago.

    @@libertyvegan6686 I forgot to mention, in his book "The Easy Weigh to Slim", he basically emphasises a "raw till four" plant based diet (same as Anthony Robbins). There are a lot of Vegans (me included) who cite the similarities between going Vegan and quitting addiction. Allen Carr, in so many words, says the way to quit any addiction, is to face up to the reality that what you're doing to yourself is a mug's game… that you're continuing to pay money for. Wish I'd discovered him sooner… just like going Vegan. Cheers LV. 😌

    How crazy! I went plant based 7 years ago after being diagnosed with RA. I got better and off my meds. Then 1 year ago I got sucked into this Keto trend, and I wanted to lose weight, I started eating meat and dairy, oh Lord, what a mistake. Pain came back, fatigue, memory fog... now I am back on track and my main concern was Cognitive Function in the Long Term. Thank God I got some wisdom back. Plants are life 🌱

    I think it is individual to each person and perhaps genetics play a part. I was in my very early 50s having osteoarthritis pain, in full menopause with rapid weight gain (always active/fit & never overweight), GERD, bloating, brain fog. I went whole food clean vegan with B12 supp for 3yrs, made all from scratch incl nut milks, soaking grains etc. 18 months felt great, all things subsided...But then everything turned 180°and had bad digestive issues, gas, abnormal stools (whole undigested foods in..sorry TMI) and had gained more weight. Felt bad and like I was missing something nutritionally. But i was convinced vegan was the go, persevered for another 18 months. But i could no longer continue. It damaged me more, all my symptoms came back worse than what I started with and I had huge gut probs. I did have to play around with other clean eating styles to heal my gut and brain. I have always stayed off processed and fried food. I am now mainly whole food, low carb (75-90g) high protein, mod EVOO/ghee/GF butter only as 59yo now. With the rare bakery treat at birthdays. But off sugar and alcohol, never ever did take out or fast foods. After veganism my health checks showed high oxalate levels, kidney issues, NAFLD, high glucose (not diabetes), high triglyce's/ cholesterol and a major unbalanced gut from the quantity of fiber I consumed. Sensitivity to the main nuts as a vegan....So much damage I've had to repair and heal. So...I think it is very individual. And i eat only GF meat, pastures eggs, a little dairy, a variety of fermented foods and a select few vege now as they ruined me as a vegan. I hope you appreciate each person's needs and health reasons for changing from fully plant based, as it doesn't always suit everyone.

    Putting aside your attitude, this makes me think that we as individuals are so different. I, for example switched to vegetarian diet years ago and I lasted half a year. Brain fog, lag, and generally feeling unwell made me switch back to meat. Recently I went full carnivore, for half a year as well, and I must say I never felt better, full of energy, clearance and motivation. I need to get back to that😊 good luck on your journey and let other enjoy theirs !

    You might not be a top researcher with a bunch of degrees to your name, but out of nearly all people on social media, there's no one I currently listen to more than you. Please don't stop your content, it is beyond valuable to this generation. It is already so hard to find truth in all the crap people say. And your humour keeps me entertained all the way through.     Thank you so much!! I was just listening to Dr. Gundry's book, where he claims lectins are the cause of all autoimmune diseases and obesity. He is an acclaimed heart surgeon. So now we know that the single cause of ill health is sugar, seed oils, fat, carbs, lectins, grains or oxalates, depending on which best-selling doctor/author you choose to read. I wonder, are diet books the cause of ill health in Americans?

    I always find it so funny when anti-vegans always say stuff with no evidence such as; veganism ages you, veganism makes you pale, veganism makes your brain not function, and not only are these claims proven to be false, but they seem to point in the other direction; eating lots of vegetables can give your skin a golden glow, anti-ageing researchers recommend eating a plant-based diet and now we have data on the beneficial effects on the brain too. Keep up the good work Chris! You are one of the best nutrition channels on KZread!

I don't know that I'll ever be a vegan but I'm not replacing the meat in my freezer as I'm finishing it up and the goal is to have animal foods be measured in grams per week rather than ounces per day.     When I went plant based the idea was to only eat what I could kill but I never got hungry enough to shoot a rabbit. Now the only animals I eat are bivalves. Since they don't have a brain , they're no more morally relevant than plants ,and thus vegan . I'll gladly argue with other vegans about this but most of the time they get too upset.

    @@contact2001 I've been vegan for 10 years , I've done the high carb low fat , whole foods , frutarian , keto plant based etc nothing have been working and I just lost my health to a point I was thinking I will die. Now 1 year carnivore and im thriving more than ever , all have been cured. My gut , my skin, my digestion, my anxiety , depression, low self esteem , I just feel a human again. But yeah I know what vegan will say , I was never a vegan , I never done it correctly blablabla , I know I was saying all that before too .. but I have learn like you will in few years.

    It has to do with ego and believing you are right about past actions. It also probably has something to do with self image and self esteem. Dietary habits make up a very large part of ourselves. Both for socializing and self soothing.

    One of my motivations for eating WFPB is for mental clarity. Especially coupled with aerobic exercise, the positive effect on mental sharpness is unparalleled when compared to eating greasy food of any kind. I can feel that sharpness plummeting if I eat greasy takeaway food. It's good to have studies back up my personal experience.

    Another tremendously intriguing video. This one is kind of scary for me as I was on the SAD for most of my life. Only been plant based for 3 years now. I wonder how much shrinkage I’ve endured?     I don't know if vegetarians are really "more intelligent," but I can say from personal experience that within about a week after quitting meat I felt like a fog lifted from my brain. A fog I didn't even know existed, because I had been in that state my entire life. I became sharper and more alert. I may not think better than before, but I absolutely think faster.

    Interesting to see that indeed becoming 99% vegetarian was the reason behind my perceived improvement in cognitive function, especially for concentration and executive function, which are very noticeable for ADHDers like myself

    @SomeFrenchGuy I first read about going Veganism in Anthony Robbins's "Unlimited Power". He wrote that there might be a connection between changes in diet and clearing up hyperactivity symptoms. There's been no noticeable improvement but, still glad I did it. It's a statement that I'm at least willing to try and take control of my own destiny. There is though only one treatment for ADHD. According to Dr. Russell Barkley, 80% of the time you are going to have to medicate. I'm staying Vegan whatever happens. Il'ny'a pas un doreillier plus doux qu'un conscience tranquil. ☺️ L'avenir est vegetallien… par'ce qué sans vegetallism… il'ny'a pas d'avenir. 😋

    Nice video. The problem with using observational studies is that diet is highly confounded with other factors. I note that the comparison of MRI scans at 13:00 is simply cherry picked (you are not going to see a huge difference at age 50 in the general population between different diets because the rate of significant cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative disease is low at that age). Indeed, the finding of notable hippocampal and cerebral atrophy is suspicious for Alzheimer's disease which is rare at age 50. People who go on to develop Alzheimer's disease at age 75 would typically have a normal MRI at age 50 (accumulation of amyloid occurs ~20 years prior to symptom onset but does not result in cell death and cerebral atrophy until later). When you look at studies of similar populations as in the 7th day Adventist studies, the differences are small between vegans, ovolactovegetarians, and pescatarians. This supports the idea that processed food consumption is a more important factor than specific diet type. The risk factors for dementia are similar to the risk factors for heart disease (diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, etc, so a diet which prevents common risk factors is likely to be beneficial.     If there's anything I've learned from my undergrad in Psychology it's that as a science, it's even more riddled by confounders than nutrition is. Nutrition is no doubt important but what strikes me is that people are always looking for something so easily controllable to avoid a situation that is either unavoidable or when a more common-sense strategy is just more difficult. We know that one of the biggest factors in avoiding the worst symptoms of dementia or alzheimer's is really more about getting a variety of stimulation through learning as well as strong social connections. The brain is designed to make sense of a chaotic world, so you can eat all the fruits, veggies and flax seeds you want but if you cloister yourself in your bedroom and hardly interact with people your whole life, you're probably setting yourself up for something worse down the road.

    Thanks! It’s getting easier as I accumulate more books (kindle makes a big diff) and videos I transcribe via google and keep in a database. I may think about an episode and keep notes for a long time, but when I get serious about an episode it usually takes two weeks of focused effort to bring all the research together and a week to construct the video. Mic the vegan is able to do it all in a week, but he doesn’t use all the clips I use. They take forever to find.

    Sorry,@@jolima , just saw your comment. I was keto for about a year. Now, I've been wfpb for about two months. I wanted to stop because I wanted to see if my binging would return with more carbs and if my foot cramps (magnesium electrolyte issue) might resolve itself off keto. So far, no binges and no cramps.

    From a personal point of view, being on a 100% WFPB diet...with some minimally processed foods, my cognitive functions have incrased ten-fold compared to when i was omnivorous many years ago, and it was a junk food free diet, no burgers, pizzas or anything like that, as it was expensive. And it's not just alertness, mental clarity, but also the ability to think, find solutions, even creative ones, to problems...as well as memory...all improved drastically on a 100% plant based diet. Only ever went vegan of ethical reasons, for the animals, but the health benefits are obvious regardless.

    My family not just me has a problem with hormones, diabetes, and yes schizophrenia depression bipolar disorder as much as i hate to share it. I’m the first one who has been obsessed with health and obsessed with trying to fix these poor genetics with the least amount of medications possible. I have been struggling to find answers regardless of how healthy I think/felt/told my diet is. This video was insanely informative and I will be reading many of these books sourced here.     As per usual, fantastic content. This is a very important and close subject for me since my mom has Alzheimers disease. We had animal protein with every meal mostly in the form of pork or chicken and processed meats and of course dairy. I wish I would have known all of this 20+ years ago so I could’ve helped… Now I just have to figure out how to get my sister to understand the message but a great resource is Brain Docs (Drs Sherzai) who are neurologists and advocate a plant based diet. Love them - and you. Will try and show her this video. ❤❤❤

    Very interesting episode. I've thought about this question it's always been like the question of which came first, the chicken or the egg. Meaning are smarter people more apt to go plant based or does going plant based make you smarter. Going plant based has many effects that could lead to better brain function. Maybe some of the extra micronutrients could play a part or thinner blood and better circulation. People defending meat consumption and attack vegans typically seem a bit less intelligent in my personal view. In a recent debate, someone even restored to tell me, "You're a man, eat meat!". This person follows a carnivore diet. I think that paints a pretty accurate picture of the mindset of the carnivore diet group. They often compare themselves to lions as well. Like Jordan Peterson and his daughter with the lion diet. So, they have this image of strength and masculinity associated with eating animals. Not only is that not scientific, but it's very silly. Especially given the way modern man or woman gets this meat off the shelf in the grocery store. Luckily, I'm very confident and wasn't swayed by such a weak attack on my manhood lol.

    Jason, I have never heard Jordan Peterson refer to his diet as the "lion diet". That is a marketing term coined by his daughter in regard to her dietary practice. There is something about her manipulation of sex and gender tropes that makes me wary of her. I am not able to pinpoint it exactly, but it comes off as contrived and manipulative. I would be more comfortable if she would turn the temperature down on her physical presentation and her ham handed use of such language, signs, and symbols. If carnivory promotes mental calmness and clarity, then the best means of demonstrating such a correlation would be to embody calmness and clarity. It seems to me that the avoidance of cognitive decline in old age is a very different subject than that of IQ. The former is a topic that interests me. The latter does not. Then again, dietary tribalism is a tedious game of little interest to those who are not somehow invested in it.

Guess there are some reasons why she is not completely honest about her health conditions and justification for her diet, but I haven't bothered looking into them. Financial gain can make it challenging to figure out who is genuine. It's not a disqualifier by default, but it can make people say things they don't believe in themselves.

There is a growing body of evidence showing that it extends lifespan and healthspan in humans (it includes neuroprotection! Those who take it seem to have a slower cognitive decline and dementia with age). What effects would it have if combined with Whole food plant based diet? Big hug from Brazil!

    About 20 years ago, I remember reading that there was a study that childhood vegetarianism was clostly associated with genius. It made sense to me because most children don't register that the animals they pet at the zoo are also in their food. The kids who make those connection younger are generally brighter and more emotionally intelligent.

    @Alltid Sömnig As far as I can make out, there are a lot of similarities between ADHD, Asperger's, Tourette's &c. … and TBI. It may be worth exploring treatment for ADHD… got nothing to lose. I went Vegan because I read it might help with hyperactivity. No such luck, but it does put me at lower risk of cognitive decline. Look up Dr. Russell Barkley. His lectures on brain function are fascinating. Best of luck and my condolences on the "incident". 😉❤️🌷

    Thank you for doing this. I love it when your wife shows up. :-) I am concerned about the EPA/DHA recommendations of 2000 without any reasoning or testing. Having too much of these aren’t with any upper measure or warning. Does the author mention the why she gives that particular value? Otherwise, it feels like an appeal to authority (the author, not you.). At least OmegaQuant has a metric, a range, and a calculator on how much Omega-3 to take based on your current Omega 3 levels. If I understand it correctly, too high of these values can cause blood thinning. But then again, I’m not a doctor nor do I play one on TV. (Since you’re dirt old, you’d get that reference.). I wish you’d do another oil video featuring Omega3s in more detail. Interesting note that there are a lot of sites out there that new vegetarians/vegans who scream, “you might not getting enough zinc or iron!” People are being scared into poisoning their brain, in addition to the SAD dieters. If only we were being scared into getting checked for levels. On another note, I’d love to see what you eat in a week!! It’s much happier than a debunking video.

    Love your channel. I have an Ayurvedic background, which supports a primarily plant based diet with a lot more complexity than the Mediterranean diet. There’s little science to back it up as specifically an Ayurvedic diet, but aspects of western medicine/nutrition are now supporting some of the same precepts. Their biggest point is not eating old food. Never eat leftover rice, fresh local food, freshly made. All 3 of which, most Americans can no longer manage with our lifestyle and cultural demands

    Another great episode, Chris!! I wonder if the higher water content on a plant-based diet is another piece of the puzzle... I like to stay hydrated by eating fresh fruits and vegetables because I find it's a slower hydration effect so I dont end up feeling bloated and constantly running to the bathroom! Also very coincidentally I stumbled upon Dr. Huberman this past week and began to listen to some of his podcasts. I've been wondering about how reputable a scientist he is. Too much fat can prevent the sugar from entering the cells, which results in high blood sugar.     Been vegetarian for 4 months now. I’ve been enjoying it a lot. I work out quite a lot and eat very healthy generally. It helps me to stay at about 12% body fat. No smoking, alcohol and drugs also helps me. As a nutrition science student, I find these videos super interesting. I might get my choline levels checked soon, because I do eat 3 eggs daily. I did get my cholesterol levels checked and they are fine (mainly because I work out). I also take zinc supplements for working out, so might get that checked as well. I got iron checked very recently, and it was low, so I have been taking that as well. Omega-3 seems to be very important as well. The omega-3/omega-6 ratio is important and can reduce inflammation in the body. As us vegetarians/vegans, we don’t get that much omega-3, so I wonder if a general omega-3 supplement is really going to help much. I do personally take a 2000 mg omega-3 fish oil supplement, but I am not sure if it is actually helping me out. That was enough rambling from my side. Thank you very much for creating this video!

    I think should try getting some organic flax seed oil. It packs a really great amount of Omega 3s

    Your videos are the best mate! Well yours, Mic the Vegan and Nutrition Made Simple! (the holy trinity of fact checked information) :) Thank you, I was considering a plant based keto diet that I put together with chatGPT and Chronometer, however, seeing this and understanding that ketones are a backup energy source, am not that sure anymore. Maybe it has been shown to be effective in the management of epilepsy, particularly in children, because of this very mechanism of feeding the brain with an alternative source as glucose might be triggering the epilepsy fits for those brain types. Might continue sticking to the calorie restriction with a bit of daily intermittent fasting for now and not go down the plant based ketogenic route if there are no long term studies with relation to the brain.

    I find the caloric restriction/TimeRestrictedEating path really enjoyable and affordable. And I think it leads to the metabolic benefits that would be the reason to try keto. So... Yep I think you would do a good choice.

    Good plan. My husband did keto twice (before I knew anything, and before we both went plant based). He felt miserable and he gained the weight back so fast after stopping keto. And now he is eating 3 years (mostly whole) fully plant foods: ideal weight, never hungry, lots of energy.

    Based on the science that we’ve seen on this channel, and several other very well done channels in regards to the dangers of high meat consumption, I feel like the people on the carnivore diet are deliberately placing themselves in a massive social/bro-science experiment that I fear will end with a lot of guys dying of heart disease very early in their lives. I mean if I’m wrong, that’s great, if it doesn’t bear out this way, and these guys all survive and thrive that would be excellent. I don’t want anyone to get hurt, but it seems to me like the end game of rabid devotion to the carnivore diet is that a lot of guys are going to have their lives cut short needlessly.

    Don't worry about us, we are thriving. Many carnivore for 10 years and more , have no any sign of health problem , trigs are good , HDL , LDL , 0 CAC etc. Science always been debunked over the years, it's now time to see the truth about cholesterol and update our science 😁

    From what I have seen most people that go carnivore do it for health reasons. I do paleo myself since my digestion actually works on this diet (have a very hard time with fiber). And as far as I can tell nobody wants to test the vegan or Mediterranean diet against a Clean carnivore or meat-based diet (paleo/keto, etc.). The studies are done against SAD and that is not meat based and just about any other diet would be better than SAD. I now need to look into some of the studies that were mentioned here.

    @@richardcardinale7152 carnists say publicly how healthy they are. Funny thing though, we vegans have accessed your online forums. So many carnivore diet adherents develop a lot of health problems after going carnist. From diarrhea, to constipation, to smelling weird and bad breath, to balding, to skin problems, to heart attacks and strokes. I've never seen health problems like these in plant based and vegan forums. The few that do have health problems on plant forums, had them before going vegan or plant based, and that's why they went plant based.
