How Not to Age - Presentation

Ғылым және технология

In this lecture (recorded live), Dr. Greger offers a sneak peek into his latest book, How Not to Age.
Inspired by the dietary and lifestyle patterns of centenarians and residents of “blue zone” regions where people live the longest, Dr. Greger presents simple, accessible, and evidence-based methods to preserve the body functions that keep you feeling youthful, both physically and mentally.
New subscribers to our e-newsletter always receive a free gift. Get yours here: nutritionfacts.org/subscribe/.
I’m thrilled to release this presentation based on How Not to Age, my new book coming out in December after three long years in the making. If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the book trailer: nutritionfacts.org/video/book....
Preorders are available now. nutritionfacts.org/book/how-n...
If you plan to buy How Not to Age, please consider preordering. All preorders count towards first week sales, which factor into The New York Times Best Sellers list calculations. So, the more preorders How Not to Age receives, the more likely it will make the list, which could help expose millions to the message of healthy eating. In fact, the book lands on December 5-perfect timing for holiday gifts for everyone in your life you want to live long healthy lives. So, consider getting some of your holiday shopping done early by preordering a whole stack!
As always, all proceeds I receive from all of my books are donated to charity.

I went vegan when I turned 24, now 86. At that time I did not do it for health benefits but for the sanctity of life and reading Krishnamurti. I have relished the benefits this WFPB way of life has brought. I do not wear glasses, read voraciously, sense of smell almost too good, hearing seems fine. Nature and her gift of plants, nothing else as good. Thank you Dr Greger for an entertaining and humorous talk.

I have not eaten meat for nine years. Started intermittent fasting two years ago, with only one full meal before 6:00 pm. Morning: one big mug of black coffee with one table spoon of dark chocolate powder. Mid-morning: Home-made soy milk boiled and mixed with black sesame and raw peanuts, one bowl of mixed nuts (Brazil nuts, cashews, pecans, macadamia nuts, pumpkin and sunflower seeds. Fresh blueberries and raspberry. Then go for an uphill walk with my dog for 40 minutes. Dinner around 6:00 pm: broccoli or broccoli sprouts, mushrooms, garlics or onions plus other veggies and some seafoods. My most recent biological age is 18 years younger than my chronological age. I’m in my 60’s. In addition, I do dumbbells everyday for 15 minutes and yoga 10-15 minutes. I read Dr. Greger’s “How Not to Die”, Dr. William Li’s “Eat to beat Disease”, Dr. Sinclair’s “Lifespan”. Most recently, I follow Bryan Johnson’s Blueprint with my modified version. Without prescription intervention, vital signs: blood pressure=100/60, SpO2=98~99, HDL=104, ApoB=88, Triglyceride=51, HBA1c=5.2, glucose=81, Insulin=5.2. Galleri Test: all negative. P.S. not only am I following experts in their 40’, 50’, 60’ and 70’, am I also paying close attentions to those who actually live to 100+ such as Dr. John Scharffenberg, Dr. Howard Tucker, Dr. Gladys McGarey and Dr. Wareham. It is important to have a reality check. P.S., I am feeling great everyday. The first thing in the morning when I wake up is to check my sleep quality. Then turn on my favorite music, then do yoga stretch for 10-15 minutes. Besides brisk walking 40 minutes with my dog, I do weight training for about 20 minutes, using four different sets of dumbbells, then two different weights of kettlebells to train my legs. I go to bed around 9:00 pm.

Regular blood tests, because parents were ill, and the only way to not scare them with regular tests were to make them for "everyone". Boring results. Always. The only time I needed a doctor post teenage was when I was pregnant. Then my ex had blood glucose in the stratosphere and got on a keto diet. So I did the same in support. For the first time EVER, my blood glucose, lipids AND liver enzymes showed up high. Stopped ASAP, but wasn't sure what to do. Exercised, ate "healthy" but without thinking through all this. Ironically, I even researched supplements and such for weight loss, but didn't think of research on diet. Was STRUGGLING to get back to normal. This makes so much sense.

I was WFPB for a little over 11 years. Then early last year I was diagnosed with severe osteoporosis after having a fractured vertebrae. I didn’t fall, was not in an accident, so the only thing I can think was that I was training to become a yoga instructor and a lot of the movements are bending forward, compressing one’s spine. I was very healthy for those 11 years. During that time I went through menopause and had absolutely no symptoms or hot flashes and I attribute that to no animal protein in my diet. I have to wonder if the osteoporosis is due to not paying attention to my mineral levels. Regardless, for the last year, I have eaten meat, fish, and dairy. I am going to go back to primarily whole foods again, because I truly felt much better.

plant based diets lower bone mass. So in longterm we could unnofficially say that it causes osteoporosis. This is due to antinutrients pulling minerals out of your bones. But if you feel better on plant based it is not worth to waste life with eating meat.

This is good information. I saw two studies just over 20 years apart where they tracked the lives of centenarians in the U.S. They found that they had four things in common, and they were not diet-related. The four things are 1. A Good Attitude. 2. Do something physical every day. 3. Do Something social every day. 4. Let go of losses. All is related to #1 a good attitude. I am 65 and feel like I'm 30. Attitude makes the difference.

I live in SoCal and have met Adventist people-I even worked at an Adventist hospital in the early 2000s, and they do tend to be vegetarian, very disciplined and balanced and loving towards all those they encounter. I have thrived by rejecting carbs, and losing the guilt over meat eating. I was prediabetic, 50lbs over weight, and suffering from inflamation, and heart disease. All these things were reveresed simply by replacing carbohydrates with meat, fish and eggs. Fasting was ptt of the key to transform my body into a fat burning machine.

My grandmother died about 30 years ago...at age 104. Her doctor told the family "She rusted out." Unknown what was actually on her death certificate.
