For beginners, the way the two dance types have been compared, simple and to the point, job well done. On top of that, you shared the long term view as well without complicating it, excellent. ❤

I've only been dancing about 5 years, went to a dance school to learn, and took both at the same time. Salsa is more fast-paced and has more intricate hand and circular movements. My instructor taught On-1 salsa and urban/ sensual bachata. Bachata, for me, is easier to lead and to follow and even at home parties and gatherings will bring most people onto the dance floor.

Thank you for discussing this and posting this video. I just started taking Salsa and Bachata classes on different nights of the week near Pasadena, CA, and I agree with you that Bachata music is so much easier to hear the main beat and thus know you’re in time with the rhythm of the music. With Salsa, sometimes I can tell, and at other times I can’t. And it’s as you said, it depends on how many instruments are being played and knowing which instrument is actually keeping the main beat. Why do they make it so difficult?! 😅 I really like both styles of dance and am happy to be learning both. I’m glad that you stressed that it’s good to learn and know both.

Salsa steps tire me out, bachata I can keep dancing all night long with breaks here and there. So that's why I went with learning bachata first after taking a lesson in both to get a feel. Will take salsa once I have good foundations and not blank out on what moves / combinations I am capable of in class but tend to forget in social.

my take is this... take salsa first .. it is harder .. yes but also the moves are faster and it makes you think faster. bachata is slower and if you are used to faster thinking on your feet from salsa, the transition is easier. but as they said as well..learn both close together.

Oh I completely agree. Salsa music is so much more complicated. Much harder to pick up where you’re at. All those spins and turns too (as a follow)! As a salsa dancer I just picked up bachata on the dance floor (I don’t think there were any bachata classes available near me at that time). Now with sensual bachata around and classes available, I definitely need to take those classes thought 😂

As a lead that started dancing last year in august I learned both bachata and salsa and salsa came more naturally to me. So much that I surprise people for how long I have been dancing I like salsa more because the fast pace and the pivoting movements seem to be more like how I naturally move around quickly so it came easier. Bachata is slow and Isn't something I feel I can build momentum in and move off of, it feels kind of like stop and go type movements.

Thank you for your comment and for appreciating our video! While we don't currently have a video specifically about becoming a Bachata or Salsa instructor and making a living from it, it's certainly an interesting topic. The path to becoming an instructor and building a career in dance involves a combination of training, experience, and dedication. To become an instructor, it typically requires years of practice, taking classes, attending workshops, and gaining performance experience. Many dancers also pursue certifications from recognized organizations to enhance their credentials. As for making a living, instructors often teach classes at dance studios, offer private lessons, perform at events, and sometimes even organize their own workshops or dance festivals. If you're interested in pursuing a career as a dance instructor, we encourage you to research and connect with experienced instructors in your area. They can provide valuable insights, mentorship, and guidance tailored to your specific goals. Remember, each dancer's journey is unique, so it's important to find the path that works best for you. We appreciate your interest in this topic, and if we create a video in the future covering these aspects, we'll make sure to let you know. In the meantime, if you have any other questions or need assistance with anything else, feel free to reach out. Keep dancing and pursuing your passion!

In my opinion sensual bachata is easier than cuban salsa even for a beginner. I'd say that it's more important that you practice than which dance you choose. Team up with your class mates and start practicing after your first basic lesson. A practica can start with rehearsing and discussing the moves/combos you learnt in your own tempo. And it usually ends with more of a social part where the leaders freely mixes the moves and the followers need to pick up the signals without anticipation.

I was wondering why you think that Bachata is easier, until the end when you mention Bachata Sensual, which is deffinitly difficult, as you said. Nowadays, at least in Europe, Bachata Sensual has completely taken over, and the scene is seperate from Salsa Puertorriquenia.

We think that Bachata is easier to learn because learning how to lead or do turns linear (Salsa) can be a little harder than doing turns from side to side (Bachata). Also if we compare basic beginner moves like a left or right turn, these moves are simple to do in Bachata, whereas they are more intricate in Salsa.

I dont subscribe to the thought that I should learn both if I just dont like one or the other. I have no passion to dance bachata so I happily sit out the bachata music. I appreciate the breaks and never feel like Im missing out. I think it's 100% pointless for someone to "learn both" if they arent inspired by a certain kind of music. I get fulfilled from dancing Salsa alone at socials

As someone who dances both and started both at around same time, bachata is 300 times harder than Salsa but nobody seems to understand that because people compare first month lessons. It sucks because I feel incompetent because I am still nowhere NEAR good with a dance that's supposedly "easier" but I'm really doing great in salsa. Here's why Bachata is harder: bodywaves are a nightmare, your control as a lead is limited, so many songs have a beat change (salsa beat is difficult but its same, bachata songs have a ton of beat shifts you have to look out for), you have to lead with your entire body, you have to actually know songs themselves to dance the best because moves are basically choreography & lets face it you can't be fat and ugly, bachata is very unforgiving when it comes to that, and women are unforgiving to beginners (in classes, there are many saints and i love those but I have only came across really awful and rude behavior here). So yeah.. stop telling people Bachata is easy to learn already. Bachata is harder, so hard that I look at people and think "will i ever be like them?". It's really mean to people like me who feel inadequate in this "easy" dance. That's like saying math is easy because you can do basic calculations. Then you get to trigonometry and you feel like an idiot because "its supposed to be easy".

We are really sorry to hear that you're feeling this way. It sounds like you're putting a lot of effort into both salsa and bachata, and it's tough when you feel like one isn't progressing as quickly as the other. Your frustration is valid, and it's okay to feel this way. Remember, progress takes time, and everyone has their own journey. Keep dancing with passion, and don't let comparisons dim your love for the art. You're doing great!
