Which countries REALLY win the Olympics?

Спорт

Olympic medal counts don’t really show you which nation was the most successful, because larger countries have a huge advantage. There’s a better way to measure a nation’s Olympic success. Here are numbers from the last 10 Olympics.
I spent an embarrassing amount of time making this video. Also, it's Sydney, not Sidney.

I'm really bad with stats and your works is really amazing. :) But, I think that some parameters might be missing imho like each country location or population's sport preferences. For exemple, Norway has a far greater ski practitioners population than Kenya and Portugal has a way more prominent football (soccer) culture than the USA.

Out of curiosity how much do you think it would change if you did medals vs athletes participating at that olympics. While population makes a difference I think the actual showing up vs winning may be fairly enlightening myself.

I don't see why the result for winter olympics was surprising. Norway has both the most medals and the most gold medals of any nation in the winter olympics. It was always gonna come out on top, especially with the low population, no matter how you crunch the numbers.

The video only mentioned the winter Olympics since 1998, which I assume is what hue hue was also meaning (and I believe Norway would have the most medals in the specified period), therefore fjellyo32's caveat about USSR and East Germany are inapplicable, as would be any former Yugoslav countries previous histories within Yugoslavia or Czechia/Slovakia's previous histories within Czechoslovakia etc. In fact I assume this is why the original video did not take things back further than the late 90s, so that political geography was kept the same for the entire period (more or less).

Shouldn’t you take the number of participants each country can send to the Olympics into account? For example, maybe China has the ability to to train a lot more athletes but they don’t because it would be useless because only a few can go to the olympics. And there’s many other variables effecting the problem as well. I really don’t think there’s a way to get any sort of accurate results.

Isaac Gund Oh yeah? Well when we Norwegians ride Polar Bears, we ski over their butts, so they run faster. Then when they're hungry, we give them our precious Lutefisk freshly caught under the dinosaur age which is taboo to not like even though nobody does it. When we have finished the ride, we sue Statoil for drilling for oil because it smells bad and the poor fish get oily, which then speaks out on the Big Thing, aka. the rather small parliament, that you skied on a polar bear's butt. That is very illegal so you get locked up for 2 minutes in a five-star hotel which people call prison. Then we try to do everything all over again but call it a "Dugnad" so we don't get locked up even though the five star hot... sorry, prison, is pleasure for free. Stylish, don't you think?

Darkskidmark, yeah Australia is absolutely crazy about sport. Main reason why they don't get recognised as much is because they play very different sports to America. The most popular sports are Australian Rules Football, Rugby League, Cricket, and then Soccer and Basketball are more prominent at junior levels. Then literally everyone knows how to swim, I'm pretty sure its actually part of the curriculum. I mean, we are surrounded by water so it makes sense. This explains why the tear it up at the Olympic swimming

Yeah obviously you would dominate Sydney 2000 considering you enter more than the usual amount of athletes. 2004 and 2008 you were definitely overachieving nothing to say about that but you guys did well. UK has put some serious investment into athletes since the 2004 Olympics hence their rise in 2008 (2012 is a bit unfair to count) but 2016 was a good indication of what that investment produced. Probably by the next olympics the UK will top the summer games average unless Australia puts in more investment. (Tbf an investment into cycling would probably give the UK a run for their money in a sport that they literally dominate and push them/us down on the leaderboards)

EJ Ioane It's not the same with Britain, they probably won't decline because Olympic sports are now public funded as they get money from the national lottery. That's why they have been getting better, that's why there was an improvement after London aswell, unlike other countries where the previous host nation declines in medals. There is also not likey to be less funded as it's a lottery, i don't think they'll be a decline rather a plateau.

But look at the chart at 0:30 Jamaica with a population of 2.7m people won 11, and New Zealand with 4.6m won 18. Yet Australia is declared the winner with 23.8m and 29 medals? That doesn't seem right.

I suspect a similar arrangement exists with NZ/Aus (especially rugby) and Aus/Eng (especially cricket and Olympic sports). Apart from rugby (and Olympic medals per capita if you like) Australians, broadly, see the Brits as our greatest and long-standing rivals.

Awesome video! Really interesting way to rank different county's performances at the olympics. I also like that you put that disclaimer at the end of mentioning all of the other factors that are just impossible to account for. Living and training in different countries (primarily in the US) and the complications of people with dual citizenship and 'shopping around' for an olymipic team they want to be on will always be an impossible outlier to calculate. Keep up the interesting videos!

Or you could just calculate based on the number of athletes each country entered rather than their entire population. There's no correspondence between country size and number of skilled athletes so I don't see the point in calculating anything based on that. Just divide number of medals won by the total number of athletes entered and you'll get your answer for who did the best in the Olympics. More population =/= More elite athletes

It really matters how you define winning the Olympics. Your definition seems to be highest ratio of medals to qualifying athletes. In that case, the best strategy would be to only send athletes you are sure will take home a medal. You can also easily have multiple counties tie for 1st place with 100%. If Russia has 1 athlete and they get gold, and China has 10 athletes who all get gold, who wins?

This just begs the question which factors are counted and which factors are not counted towards the "impressiveness" of a country's athletes. To what degree do we try to make it fair? For example, if you factor in population, then what about factoring in the fact that a country like Norway has MUCH more opportunity and facilities for even practicing winter Olympic sports due to geographical location than say, Cuba? Or what about the factor of each country's poverty rate/social class distribution? Countries like Nigeria have a huge population, but the overwhelming majority don't even dream of ever competing in something like the Olympics, because they are busy struggling for food and clean water every day. So logically, even though they have a higher population than say, the US, the US has a larger pool of people that are even able to train for the Olympics. To take it to extremes, should we even factor in the innate genetic differences in people from different parts of the world? Should the impressiveness be solely based on how hard each athlete worked? (probably impossible to calculate) There's simply too many factors to make a truly fair ranking, and even then, people would have a different idea of what is fair and what is not; which factors should be counted, and which ones should not. Just saying.

Instead of per capita, why not measure per athlete sent to the games? This would take the % of the athletes representing the country that actually won. This makes it fair to both small and large countries. EDIT: Few people are arguing for larger population = better athletes as the country because of the wider selection. It is invalid because we are "measuring performance at the games". You can't count the amount of athletes and citizens(non athletes) of a country that isn't even in the Olympics and measure their performance! You can't punish countries for not making enough athletes like India. US has a supportive environment for athletes, versus India. Using medals won to participating athletes of each country is valid because it is proportional. Like 2 math tests with score of 50/100 and 20/30 ~ although the first test has more correct answers, the second test score is in-fact better, which solves the per capita problem.

Wow, so Britain has actually performed the best the past 2 Summer Olympics? I knew we were doing well but we were always behind the US on the tables. I feel so proud for our athletes.

Shmatt S we've plowed alot of money into it in recent years due in to the recent Olympics being in GB ... You get what you pay for atleast in this case it seems. Plus success breeds success

Yeah I suspected this result. GB has done great in recent years but the population is much smaller compared to the other main competitors.

But in team sports which are the sports that are the most popular and the only ones that really matter England are useless and even little NZ beats them at most team sports. Also Great Britain is 4 countries not 1 like every other nation.

I like how they light the Olympic torch near Athens, then it stays lit all the way to the opening ceremony. -------------------- I guess it's hard to put out a Greece fire.

I think your model works really well, and some sanity checks help verify that. For example in the mid-2000's there was a change in the way UK sport was funded to have a more medal focused approach (sports with a lesser medal chance had their funding cut or eliminated to focus it on the sports that would do well, like indoor cycling events). Also Australia was the one I predicted as coming out best, they are a sport obsessed nation. The only thing I would suggest is that maybe the number of medals needs to be weighted. Events like swimming and cycling have a very large number of medals for just slightly different events, which means that some nations can really dominate in those arenas. For example in the cycling GB won 6 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze out of 18 events.
