This was definitely interesting. We had a student teacher who had the rose gold inverted ligature who let me try it. I fell in love with it, but couldn’t find one for the longest time. Finally! Got my hands on one and it pairs so well with my Gonzalez reeds, C. Robert Scott mouthpiece and 65mm barrel on my R13. My favorite set up for sure!

There is something about the way they “feel” that is different. I don’t think there is much impact on the tone, and any impact is far less than either the reed or mouthpiece….but super fun to goof around with. A year later…I am still pretty much only playing the gold one.

Not sure it showed in the graphs, but my impression is the platinum is slightly brighter than the others, and I think I liked that in this context. With another player and set-up it might be quite different.

Super interesting video, I really enjoys Michael Lowenstern’s video as well. I’m curious, would you say ligature selection is more about the feel to the player than making a big difference in sound? I did a rapid fire test of probably 10 ligatures once with my lessons professor where I just played a C major scale up and down then moved on to the next ligature. To me, the feel of each ligature was vastly different. However, I neglected listening for subtle differences in sound. Interested in your thoughts!

Hi Lexie! I have been thinking about this since I made the video. For me, it’s hard to separate the experience of playing from the sound that is coming out. It’s hard to pin down the difference between listener and player. I have also been thinking about what makes for the difference in response. An even response may come from less overtones in the sound, but more evenly represented in each note. The shorter answer…yes I think it impacts feel more than sound. I am confident that any difference in sound would be adjusted for in reed selection or any other more important factors in our playing. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Platinum all the way. At least coming through the speakers. Maybe try all four … you could always return after a trial. Silver , Nickel , Platinum , and Gold.

I recently got a nickel plated non inverted, older version. Although It's quite resonant, I miss some resistance, so I went back playing my gold one from RDG. In terms of resistance, do you think the platinum is in between the nickel plated and the gold? Is it more resistant than the nickel plated? Similar to a silver plated?

  • @clarinetninja

I like the platinum. I don’t know how to characterize how much resistance there is. It feels very even in how the resistance feels from register to register.

After all this time, do you like the Platinum more or do you keep playing the gold one? For me, I have the non-inverted gold from RDG and I think It's my best ligature(I have many) despite the discoloraton and the gold plating peeling off the screws. I'm still very curious how different would be If I'd order the inverted gold instead of the non-inverted. Or If I'd get the Platinum. Sure thing is, for me, Bonade ligatures excel over others. There's some "magic" with the Bonade which gives more control in my playing and more dynamic range. I don't have that ease with other ligatures.

I have used the gold bonade after making this video. I put a ding in the tip rail of two mouthpieces that 8 think was a result of the density of the platinum plating. It also could have just been coincidence… the other two ligatures I like are the ishimori and the Vandoren VO. Unfortunately my habit of over tightening ligatures bends the ishimori and flat out breaks the vandoren. The fear of my reed coming off when I swab during a concert or show keeps my tightening habit alive even though it has cost me hundreds of dollars. And I agree the bonade has magic

@@clarinetninja Well, you could ask your clarinet technician to put a thinner cork on the mouthpiece instead of overtightening, so It stays in place and also coming off easily. Overtightening the ligature has a negative effect on playing. You should tighten to the point where the screw locks, not further than that.

Lots of questions about Bonades, here's another one. I've seen a variety of Bonade ligature versions. Buzz , H&B (Herouard & Benard) Bonades, and the current modern version. They all look identical but I really wonder If they do have sound and quality differences. In the European market, I often see the HB Bonades, even my clarinet technician sells them in silver-plated, models L2250A and L2250UA. In the US and generally, I see the current modern version in nickel-plated, modes 2250 and 2250U, and in silver-plated, models 2250S and 2250US. I'm mostly interested to know between these and the HB version, which is better. The HB version mentions Bonade type but It looks identical to a current Bonade.

The platinum seems to have a more contained, but still resonant sound profile. The thing I don’t like about it is that when I put the platinum on and catch the tip of my mouthpiece, I dent the tip of my mouthpiece. This happened after I made the video or I would have certainly mentioned it

try some 320 or 400 grit self adhesive sandpaper stuck to the back of a legere reed. with srews adjusted appropriately, slide lig on and off many times. this will remove projections and somewhat correct warped rails. check rails by sighting along surface as you might when looking down the bore for cracks. guaranteed evidence of contact with abrasive will not be perfectly even! continue until contact patches are at least even left to right. play test again and ill bet the harmonic series will be closer...and response faster and more stable too!

There are two reasons I play inverted rather than standard. Both may be silly. 1) I don't like how the standard chews up the front of the reed - even though I don't think it has an impact on the sound 2) I used to have a super long beard and it would get caught in the screws and hurt a lot! Thanks for watching and commenting! :)

Reeds coming off the mouthpiece when we have to take the mouthpiece off the instrument to swab is a real concern. My experience is that the most important factor on all of it is a reasonably greased cork and the right grip. I have never been super confident in crucial moments that my ligature will stay on when I swab mid-performance. I have found the Bonade's more reliable than most in that regard than a lot of others. All that being said - everybody gets different results with everything! Thanks for watching!!!!!!
