Which 3D Scanner is Best for 3D Printing?

Ғылым және технология

In today's video, I test and compare 3 different 3D scanners and tell you which one is the best and if you should get a 3D scanner. Thanks to Onshape for sponsoring today's video. Check them out at Onshape.pro/NextLayer.
It's the dream of every 3D printing enthusiast. You see something in the physical world, scan it in seconds, and print it out in an exact replica on your 3D printer just like that. Up until recently, this has only been possible with commercial scanners that cost tens of thousands of dollars, and tons of training to use properly.
These days all of that is changing, and just like 3D printers have become more and more available to consumers, we're also seeing the first wave of consumer grade 3D scanners hit the market. But are they any good?
I tested three different solutions for at-home scanning, and in this video I'm going to compare them all and tell you which one is the best. Stick around to the end because I'll also answer the question that's on everyone's mind... Should you get a 3D scanner?

Great video. I think the Mole 3D scanner would have been a good inclusion in this comparison. After using the Revopoint and the Mole 3D scanner I really prefer the output and quality of the Mole3D scans. The software is pretty good for the Mole as well. A lot less post scan cleanup in Zbrush and Houdini with the Mole scans and in my opinion it actually comes pretty close to the accuracy of some of the much more expensive laser/LiDAR scanning equipment we have used in the past. With the Mole the models align automatically and easily when scanning larger sections in chunks. As you mentioned the software is a huge part of the experience and 3D maker did a pretty good job here. Not super important but something in passing I thought I’d mention in regards to compute time to process scans and as I love the Mac - and being a user of Mac’s for VFX / film production since the old PowerPC days one place Apple has really dropped the ball is with GPU compute. I also have the M1 ultra and when doing photogrammetry or point cloud alignment whether from laser/LiDAR or other types of 3D work it takes an ice age on the Mac even with Apple Silicon optimized software and when compared to a modestly configured PC with a last generate RTX 3090 the Mac is much slower. In fact my M1 Ultra as configured cost roughly the same as the render node I have with 4x 4090s which completely smokes the Mac in pretty much every 3D task I throw at it. As good as Apple Silicon is it’s GPU compute is a lot less capable than CUDA / RTX and it’s not really scalable like it is on PC where you can just throw in an additional GPU and scale performance with each GPU added. At one point we could do multi GPU setups on the mac - unfortunately Apple went a different way with things and many of us hoping the latest power Mac model would bring that capability back we’re really disappointed again. Not trying trying to start a MAC / PC holy war as I love my Macs too but I feel like Apple really blew it when they severed their relationship with Nvidia. All of the production level 3D renderers like Arnold / Redshift/ Octane / Vray / Karma - heck even Cycles run much faster under CUDA/RTX than the built in GPUs by Apple and even discreet GPUs by AMD at the moment. It’s a bit of a tangent I’m on but it relates to 3D work in general and the sad state of direction Apple has been heading into since it started focusing less on industry pros and almost exclusively on consumers. Even the photogrammetry based iPhone software you used in this video has upload to the the cloud and do GPU compute on a server farm filled with Nvidia A100’s but I digress. Anyway great video and I’m glad I didn’t back the Lizard - I almost did and your video made me appreciate dodging that bullet.

I don't want to use Assets from any Asset store, have compatibility issues and issues with possible copyright. I've been looking at the 3D scanners as a possible way to create my own assets. I was wondering if the revopoint also picks up and creates the textures? (Hoping to be able to scan and import plants, trees, rocks, sea shells, etc.) On a side note, is the liquid in the center of the sulfur pits: Sulfuric Acid?

Ofc I made relatively big scanner, up to 1m cube After months of sourcing parts, building, using all kinds of paid and free programs and tons of headache. I just went and bought decent scanner from Shining 3D. It did cost close to 2k (years ago). Scans take seconds instead of hours, has real good percision and I can just scan and send directly to printer, without any post-processing, which used to take hours too Saves about 10h a day at least per scan (scan time + post-processing)

Overall, either of the dedicated scanners are still cheaper than buying the iPhone if you aren't on the Apple platform already. Is the scanner app completely free, is it just a free trial or are most of the features blocked by a pay wall? If it's free, then maybe it'd be worth using to scan objects in an environment that is more scanner friendly and you could use a thin pedestal or tripod to help get the object further away from surfaces. I've not used an iPhone since the iPhone 3, but I know a few people that have them and would gladly scan things for me if it's viable.

I have both. They both have their pros and cons. I have been using the Wale software for the lizard as they are the manufacturer of the lizard. It’s been about 90% out of 100. The Revo just had a new update and it’s had some really good scans, but the latest update has been trash. It’s a beta version so I’m not too concerned I still have the older version that works fine. I know these aren’t cheep but I also have the original creality CR scan and using it with the whale software has made me start using it again. I think if you take a little time with some of the newer software you can get decent scans out of either one. I think the hardware on both are fine. We’re going to have to wait for the software to catch up. Just a side note the Einscan which is close to a $1000. The software and the hardware both shine.

One thing that I don't think was very clearly stated -- were you using the LIDAR or the photo mode with the phone? Thanks for doing this. I do think the iPhone one will ultimately win and get better and better. the reason is that the cpu power is incredible and getting better in the iPhones. The hardware is set and consistent, so many developers can and will create software for it and things like clipping out unwanted objects should become very easy to do with the built in software over time. Thus having the device with you at all time, not having to paint stuff white, and getting constant hardware upgrades will cause it to "win". Even now there are multiple generations of iPhones with LiDar. I suspect this will become more common, even on lower end models over the years to come.

I'm talking a 3-5 year old $150 craigslist purchase running something common like windows 10.The reason i suggest this is because it's normally an entirely different experience usability-wise. Most software that comes with maker products isn't made for Macs. It's adapted to work there.. which lets face it it rarely does well. Just reviewing the Mac software is like just reviewing the made -for-tv movie version of a series. sure they're about the same thing... but the quality just isn't the same. By not even mentioning the windows side of software you're cutting out a very large potential audience of subscribers.

Gotta point out, you *will* be biased toward something you receive for free versus something you pay for and also look more favorably on all of their products, even if the gift you are given is extremely small. It's why handing out small gifts at medical conferences by pharma companies is seen as either unethical, or in some places, completely illegal. Though you do acknowledge that it was free, which at least puts things on a more even field.
